I have always bought the Masonite that is only finished on one side, because the unfinished side has an "almost canvas" like pattern on it. I cover the unfinished side with 4 coats of gesso, alternating brush/roller directions, and have never had a panel warp. Done this with panels up to 24x36.

Totally agree about using cheap materials for painting on - very liberating. I've even used stuff like plasterboard and concrete sheet. Really enjoying your videos and love your style. Thanks from NZ.

Can I ask a really really dumb question please? Masonite / hardboard like that has the painted side (white in this case), then the back of it that is that sort of weird cardboardy stuff with like loads of crosses printed into it to add texture- normally the 'b' side that you don't see? So you have lightly sanded that & then primed that? Huh? Or have you gotten twin faced hardboard with two 'presentation' faces on it- one white, one the usual brown colour? Sorry to sound thick, but in the UK Ive only ever really seen the one sided stuff with brown one side & checker texture on the other, and zooming in on the video isn't helping much!
@KristaFulbright
@KristaFulbright 7 ай бұрын
Yes I am wondering that too. Some hardboard has a texture on the back like an imprinted pattern and is rough and not smooth at all. I WISH we could get SupaWood in the USA!!!! UUUUUUGGHHHHHH.

@@chamberlainpaintings Thanks for getting back to me. I’ve had a few birch panels warp on me even with a cradle and 2 coats of gesso on both sides and edges. Thinking about using MDF board, but concerned about formaldehyde leaching out from under the gessoed coats. How close to the edges of the board to you bring your cradles? Cheers-Greg
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings Жыл бұрын
I prefer hardboard to MDF for durability. I buy hardboard that’s been painted on one side so I only have to seal one side. I’ve had no problems with warping! The cradle goes right to the edge of the panel. That way you’re strengthening/protecting the most vulnerable part of the panel (the corners and edges).

Do you ever make a texture on the board for your brush strokes before working? If so, how? Had to edit, what I mean by working, is painting. Haha
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings 5 жыл бұрын
I don't really texture the panels. Some people make a texture by doing random brush strokes with a large house painting brush.

@@chamberlainpaintings Thanks for your help man. I gotcha. I like the idea of using boards and I can see you're a hard worker, but I also like the texture of a canvas on my brush so I figured I would see what you were doing beyond a roller. Boards with gesso on a roller only is just a bit too slick for me.

i need to make some panels too for oil painting. Im also wanting to use gesso or acrylic primer, but someone told me that even though the oil paint will stick to the gesso, it does not form a chemical bond with it, and so will not be archival. Have you heard about this? I too want to experiment lots, but the work im making is now turning out good, so i would also like my paintings to last. What type of wood do u think i should paint on for it to be archival, and do u know how i should prepare this wood for archival? Thankyou

Thanks' for the video, but I have a question ... If you mentioned this I apologize, but are the panels you use here tempered or untempered? If they are untempered, is there a reason you didn't seal them for moisture resistance first, or is the gesso good enough?

Worse than the cardboard painted on by Toulouse Lautrec, Nicolai Fechin, Jamie Wyeth and many others?!! You've got outdated information my friend. Present day hardboard it is pure cellulose fiber (wood); it has no additives, fillers, glues or resins added. It is one of the most stable supports for oil painting available today. 😊👍
