I _think_ you can only do that with softer metals, so not with iron or steel, but things like copper, gold, and presumably brass too

It’s a cheap way to insulate the molten brass from oxidizing the toxic zinc fumes. Much cheaper than using the same amount of borax powder.

@@amaulana090 It is not done often with brass because the borax that he used is a flux, a chemically active additive for removing dross & debris. Slag is from a refining process not from casting. While commercial glass is commonly available but is virtually intert, used mostly by Russians to seal crucible steel at a much higher temperature.

Glass is SiO2 or Silica, on melting it forms an acidic slag which assists with removal of impurities as oxides, a necessary part of most metal extraction processes. Borax / TetraBorate acts as a thinning agent of the slag.
