'Making Introductions' is produced in partnership with our artists and focuses on the techniques that stand at the core of their respective studio processes. All of these short classes can be followed at home and will be released throughout the Christmas holidays. In one fifteen-minute video we hope you will learn a little about one of our artists and a lot about their process.
Every masterpiece starts with a sketch, every journey with a step. It is often forgotten that art is as much a language as speaking. “Making Introductions” is about learning these different ways of communicating and being able to take part in the conversation.

Years and years after buying one of his "rubbish" charcoals off the street (which i love and is beautiful) he sends me his catalog of paintings. I look at his paintings at least once a week, have tried to study them, and copy them. He has been compared to Sickert. Of all the painters i love his brushmarks makes me smile the most and his compositions are gems. So many great paintings. Pete the Street rules ok.

I remember those 'Rubbish' charcoal drawings we elected Pete a member of the RBA on the strength of them.

A few things strike me about this. The main one is just how naturally brilliant a painter he is; another is his resilience, doggedness, hardiness [to weather etc]. I also wonder if he is regularly bothered by the general public much, either in the form of general timewasters, jaywalkers, or even just those lost in admiration and awe [as I would be]. I love this type of NEAC/RA [before it went trendy] style of painting, have aspired to it for years and more or less failed to achieve something like it. For this reason, I admire it even more. I attended art schools for many years, met hundreds of students and tutors and never encountered anyone doing it or teaching it.

The Pete Brown honesty and modesty from a talented and sincere artist. Few are able to articulate the the creative process with practical advice that will inspire others.

Because most are too busy trying to sound profound and deep over some super emotional music and not actually sharing anything interesting or useful.

LOVE, LOVE! Thanks James Gurney for sharing this post! Peter Brown does nail it: painting is a process, a verb, not an end result. It is the act of engaging and of creating and deepening a connection with what surrounds us.

I loved watching that scene take shape but it's ridiculous how much time I spent worrying how Pete was going to get that painting home while it was still wet... 😁

Wonderful, insight with honest advice. Exceptional. I've been painting for over 20 years on and off and never had the confidence to paint on location until after I attended your zoom meeting on the Harrogate exhibition. I've become increasingly more drawn into how you work, it really is captivating. I've only done two plein air paintings since and wish I'd done it sooner, it's a completely different experience. Thank you Pete.

While watching this man paint I was seeing another masterpiece taking shape over the years: a beautiful soul that has endured challenges and setbacks but tenacious in the desire to live life to the full.

Every american artist even the not so good ones i see on youtube in these kind of videos just spout out a load of incredibly pretentious sounding nonsense trying to convey themselves as "deep" or "profound" and i find it so cringey and hard to watch, so its lovely to see an english artist as i am yet to find one who is not humble and honest and trying to actually share with the viewer and not just promote their 'deepness'.
