Nice work Jon. Tip for setting your angle, set the part on parallels so the pivot end cant "move" down. Put a machinist jack under the other end and wind it up to the desired angle. If friction makes the part "jump" past your desired point you can tap it down against the jack and likely not go back past your desired angle

@@jonsworkshop i hated field site meetings, IT always was last on the agenda. I famously walked out of a meeting were the colour of the floor was been endlessly being argued about. As i stormed out i walked (sent him flying) right into the MD , “calm down son what’s got you boiled up” explaining to was embarrassing and sounded childish, but from then on IT used to be near the beginning of meetings. My boss was like how did we get bumped up the agenda, haven’t got a clue Boss. I’m sure he knew exactly what had gone on. LOL

Great outcome Jon. Another time put the splitters in a bench vice to give pressure. Saves needing 3 hands and banging them with a mallet. A gentle squeeze pops them apart nicely. Chuck down so when they part it just rests on the bottom of the vice instead of dropping onto the floor. Regards from Australia.

@@joandar1 Thanks for that. I am a qualified Machine Tool Fitter ( Millwright ) 34 Years with Philips. I was the one to change chuck on arbours etc, so did it many times over the Years. So glad Jon remembered to retract the jaws before fitting the new arbour. See other YT videos where the don't 😊 I have a channel if you want to see more tips and some of the machines I have rebuilt. Hi Dave, thanks for the comment. Good idea, I never considered that, I had Morse Taper wedges in my mind and just reached for the hammer 😁. Cheers, Jon
@MachiningandMicrowaves
@MachiningandMicrowaves Жыл бұрын
Watching you belt the wedges with that big hammer was definitely an edge-of-the-seat moment, I was expecting to hear some bleeped-out expletives following hammer->hand impact! I once tried using my 20 ton hydraulic press and wedges to slacken a chuck taper. It didn't end well. I bent one supposedly-hardened wedge, and when the taper finally popped, the wedges, chuck, arbour, spacers and plates all leapt in the air and the arbour landed on the concrete floor, rolled under the lathe and disappeared. That's when I started using a vice to squeeze the wedges, applying a light tap with a brass hammer to persuade the seal to let go.
@jonsworkshop
@jonsworkshop Жыл бұрын
Hi Machining and Microwaves, thanks for the comment. Lol, I did use my thumb as a dead stop for the hammer on the final split hit lol. Got away with it this time, no expletives uttered! Vice is definitely the way to go next time round. Cheers, Jon

I had to get a cheap cast iron bodied Jacobs chuck of drill (it was mounted directly on the spindle) so I held a drill in a vice, drilled a hole in the chuck, taped it out, screwed a bolt in until it forced the chuck off.

I think someone was putting bricks in front of your wheelbarrow Jon, gets the job done ✔, like the petrol pump analogy. When you was using the pushing stick/block on the bandsaw, it reminded me of an incident where I worked, we had a good sized vertical bandsaw, and all trades used it, it became apparent that the blades were getting blunt more frequently?, one of the fitters solved when waiting for a spark to finish using the saw, the spark was using a Tungsten Guage/Slip Block as his pushing block, I kid you not, someone had given him this by his family, and being nice and hard it didn't wear out. The sparks were banned from using it thereafter. I guessed the "L" & "R" was a private joke !. Great job, thanks for sharing. Regards John.
@jonsworkshop
@jonsworkshop Жыл бұрын
Hi John, thanks for the comment. Lol, I can't possibly comment on the 'spark' as I have about as much knowledge of electrics as he had about what tungsten carbide would do to a bandsaw blade. I guess the only difference is, if I get as wrong, I will probably die lol. Cheers, Jon

Good work Jon. Tools don't need to look pretty as long as they do the job they are intended for, which these did. Another good thing about this video is that we get a lot from the suggestions in the comments (e.g. using parallels and a machinist jack, using a vice because you don't have 3 hands etc.). It is all good information and ideas that we may not think about.

Hi Jon. Nice to see that someone who's done this sort of thing as a job can still produce the same kind of mistakes as us amateurs. We're all human after all! Perfectly functional tool, no need to spend hours on something you might use twice in your life. Maybe not visually appealing, but as you suggest, it will certainly lead to some headscratching in the future: "Why is the hole offset? Why is one leg thinner than the other? Must have been a very specific problem for this unique design!"

We all enjoy watching you make useful tools, even though the two wedges may never see day light ever again,,,hehe! I am making a New Years resolution early,, ever new, are special needs tools, will be entered in to a log book with location where its stored. I think "SRS" is becoming more evident the old I get (@@)! Spent 2 + hrs last week in every tool box for the wedge to remove the 19mm chuck from the Powermatic. It ended up in the draw for the column mill :(< ugh! Was to the point of making another one from scratch, but the tool gods lead me to it, are Sammie (@@)!
