Making Jeans, All About Stretch Denim

In this next instalment of our Making Jeans series we talk about STRETCH!
Stretch denim is commonly available these days, but what is it? How much stretch do you get? What makes the fabric stretch? How much is a good amount of stretch?
Coming soon in the series, we'll cover what jeans patterns are available for the home sewer, how they react when washed at home and the difference in costs for denims.
Once we run through all of this information we are going to pick a couple of patterns and fabric each and make our own jeans. Follow us along the way on KZfaq and over on Instagram.

How do I add applique or fabric to a stretch denim jacket? Can I use cotton fabric or must it be jersey type fabric?

Thanks for doing this series! Just got a pair of Banana Republic mid-rise skinny leg jeans. Turns out they are 42 percent cotton, 41 percent viscose rayon, 10 percent lyocell, 4 percent elastane, etc. Go figure. Lol.

That sounds like a great combo - the viscose and lyocell fibres will be lighter than the cotton so with 4 percent they should be quite stretchy. If only we could find the fabric 😂

🇨🇦😃 I buy four way stretch denim a lot to make my sons “jeans” so it is possible… it’s labeled jegging fabric but I’m not sure how helpful that is because my fabric store is basically what leftovers or overstock the other stores can’t sell and nothing is labelled helpfully lol

Thanks for sharing. We have found similar in a knit fabric, like a denim jersey, but nothing yet in a woven traditional jean fabric. The hunt continues....

My bike stretch jeans are a little too long in the leg, and I need to take them up a good inch or more., what thread do I use in my sewing machine. Is there a special cotton I need, please.

We would recommend using a top stitch needle and top stitch thread for your hem, trying to match the colour used on the jeans. Your bobbin thread can be a standard cotton or polyester thread.

@@StitchSisters Hi thanks for the reply , will this still allow the jeans to stretch round the bottom of my boots etc laid flat, i can stretch them from 200 mm to 240 mm on the bottom. The jeans are cotton/elastane and allow for a comfy fit when on a bike...
