I would add dark brown paint into the pva glue. I allows you to bypass the first 2 layers of your paint. Dry brush, wash with different earthy colours (green/brown) and then dry brush. Good use of everyday items. You can make your own texture paste with sand/grit/mortar, pva glue and paint. Store it in an airtight tub. :)

great idea using old tea bags and herb mix, I use dried fine sand off the beach, mixed with raspberry leaf (£5 a kilo) and stuff ive scavenged from the forest, like dried seed pods and nut shells. Great video dude, thanks for the tips

Good stuff, gave me some great ideas! Two things I might do different are only using (heavy) washes to basecoat the dirt mix so the seperate elements shine through a bit more, and adding some matt varnish or washes to the cutout plants to make them less "out of the box".

These are two great ideas! I’m definitely gonna try a matte varnish on the plants and see how they turn out.

you can make your own clump foliage from car wash sponges, break small chunks off and put it though a coffee grinder then dye it with some green paint and flow improver. it helps to do more then one batch when it comes to colours then mix them once dry.

if you want to make like muddy pools like for rain-forest jungle a mix of coffee grounds (just dry out the ones you use for morning coffee) mix with glue and your choice of brown paint gets a nice thick lumpy texture and you can glob it on thick and push the feet of your model in to make footprints, ad a little paint medium or water to thin it and then you can use it like mud splatter, i base my orks on mud and i like to make my trucks and battle wagons nice and mucky like they have been driving at high speed through mud puddles and get my boyz feet and pants splattered like they have been stomping through mud and muck to get in the fight as fast as possible. some of my characters that i add gore effects too you can mix red food coloring and paint medium to wash the mud making it look like the mud was made by blood soaking into the dirt from a long battle

What's the water to PVA glue ratio you use? Also do you use a special brush for the glue?
@thehobbyheap
@thehobbyheap Жыл бұрын
There’s not really a strict ratio it’s just making sure that the mixture is thin enough so it can flow nicely and also go through the pipette without clogging it up. And I just use a random old brush - don’t use fancy expensive brushes for putting PVA on anything!

I guess my question is why bother with a particular mix of dirt and herbs when you're just going to prime and paint it anyway? Wouldn't any sufficiently technical paste do?
@thehobbyheap
@thehobbyheap 4 ай бұрын
That’s a fair point! I wanted to use easily accessible materials and make them go a long way. Tea bags, herbs and coconut fibre are dead cheap and will get so many more bases and dioramas done than a store bought texture paste. I guess it’s about how much you can make for as little money as possible. Plus a texture paste is usually just paint and sand - even with a primer and a paint the little leaves here will show through and look like a muddy leaf littered floor. I hope that helped answer your question dude!

@@thehobbyheap Hey thanks for the response, and fwiw I'm not trying to be a contrarian, I'm actually looking up video ideas for doing some bases for my Star Wars Legion Stormtroopers and came across your video. It's fantastic work, btw, and the end result is excellent. I'm just trying to understand the reasoning as a newbie to basing and, yeah, I can totally see the budget value in doing it this way. It's just that I really like the initial look before it was primed so now I'm wondering if there's a way to maintain that natural look with some sort of binder/glue that won't also make it look sludgy or slimy.
@thehobbyheap
@thehobbyheap 4 ай бұрын
@@simonbelmont0993 I appreciate the kind words, and it was a good question! I didn’t think you were being contrarian at all. Some water down PVA does keep it locked in before paint and priming but for extra security it might be worth hitting it with a matte varnish instead of paint if you wanted to keep the original colouration. I haven’t tried it myself but could be worth a shot!

Im currently giving it a try. Did you Pin the minis to the Base or did you just glue them?
@thehobbyheap
@thehobbyheap 3 ай бұрын
It depends on the miniature! Most minis I just glue onto the base and then build up the basing material around it. For larger miniatures like my Carnosaur, I pressed it into the still wet leaf mix so I’d know where to glue him down after the base was finished. More fragile miniatures (like resin) I’d probably pin

I don't understand why paint over the initial mix
@thehobbyheap
@thehobbyheap Ай бұрын
I’ve answered this a couple of times but it’s basically to keep it from flaking off or going bad - the paint and glue acts as a protective layer. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!
