One of my first builds is still one of my favourites. I didn’t have anything fancy to make it. Basic shape done with a coping saw, took time to whittle it to shape, sanded by hand. I took a lot of time painting it by hand using toothpicks and pins for fine details. I didn’t have a turner and turned it by hand for hours while watching a movie. Still my most satisfying lure to fish. A jointed top water/wake rat. Unfortunately I used galvanized wire so it won’t last forever.

Great video Franco. As fishermen and craftsman we all need to spread our knowledge and skillset to others. This creates a legacy. More kids need to get into fishing and making things. I got into it when I was young and didn’t have any money, so mowed yards to buy materials and made my own fishing lures with my dads tools. At one point my dad would take my bass bugs and sell them to the guys who worked with him at the mill.

This is a excellent video, I have already learnt a lot from this channel and can not recommend highly enough. Particularly like the advice on airbrush buying I have had airbrushes since my teens far to long ago and no longer only buy the most expensive as they are not required. I think you should lock this video on your home page as it is the best overview vid I have seen on KZfaq so far and I have watched loads of lure making videos as I get started down the rabbit hole of lure making. Well done sir keep up the good work

Excellent "Introduction to Lure Building" Franco! Agreed, you can get into lure building casually. I couldn't buy small (1 to 1 1/2" ) plugs for panfish and trout so I had to carve my own out of a 2x4 and hand paint with Testor model paint - they work great! I look at lure building as a hobby unto itself. From that perspective, the investment of equipment, materials and time are balanced against the "entertainment value" of learning new skills and figuring out how to make a piece of wood "swim" the way you want :) Lure making may not be practical (considering the cost of commercial lures) but then it is hard to put a value one the pleasure of catching a fish on a lure you made yourself. Thanks for the support that you give to the lure building community!

I made a cheap self contained epoxy/UV dryer in a (roughly) 20"x16"x12" storage box. As soon as I've finished applying either two part epoxy or UV resin I lock on the lid and either forget it for a few hours or turn on UV light. It's painted black on the outside and has foil on the inside including the lid. I can also store my epoxy and UV resin inside the box when in storage. The whole thing was less than $15 including the UV light and small 5/6 rpm motor. So far I've produced over 100 lures up to 180mm.

 @Engineered Angler Lures true but metric is way easier, small graduations and everything in a mulitiple of 10 and to cap it off a Kg of water is 1 litre. How much dose 13.6 gallons of water weigh (first question imperial or american). hard to do off the top of my head. 13.6 Litres of water weighies 13.6 Kg or 13,600ml. my conversion calculator is getting a work out using the old imperial / British system that even they have mostly abandoned.

Can I sweet talk you into a 8-10 mullet build? I have it starred and got so busy with work it's sat for months.was thinking glide bait but not apposed to lipped diver. Thinking if I get it right it'll be great for pensacola pass or around the bridges for huge reds and hopefully tarpon. But at 8+ " there's really no telling . I know it's a little bigger than your typical build but would love your insight. I'll happily pass on my email to discuss how to start this process. I'm not after a marling bait that intricately Carved just a bait that'll catch fish.i have a shop minus the paint booth that would make most builders drool with envy just not sure where to start with the details

I am a saltwater angler and I mostly used dead ribbon fish for bait trolling for big fish from my kayak. I made my own rigs for the ribbon fish bait but it could not make the bait swim correctly. Is there any way that I can contact you to ask for your advice? Thank you
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 2 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid I don't think I could help much on natural bait rigs.
@bonesstones6584
@bonesstones6584 2 жыл бұрын
I hope you don't mind me commenting on your question. I think the most obvious way of imparting some action to a dead bait fish would be by the use of a lipped head. I frequently used scrounger heads with eels, both real and artificial, for striped bass. This, however, may not work depending on the size of the ribbon fish you're using as the size of the scrounger heads are limited. Also, imparting some swim action to a dead bait will only work as well as the bait will allow depending on how stiff or pliable it may be.
