In this video I show you how to make Manchester Tarts. Although there are various recipes for this famous tart there does not appear to be any documented evidence as to what the original Manchester Tarts contained. Although it's basically a custard tart, my recipe does not use eggs in the recipe. It's a simple no-nonsense recipe suitable for either an after dinner sweet or a teatime treat. For many people it will bring back memories of UK 'School Dinners' back in the 1950's.
RECIPE
3 tbsp Cornflour/cornstarch
1tsp Vanilla extract
2 tbsp White sugar
500ml Whole milk
2 - 3 drops of yellow food colouring
Alternatively you can use Custard Powder in place of the cornflour/cornstarch, vanilla and food colouring.

As a mancunian definitely a favourite dessert. At school it was made with sliced bananas over the jam under the custard. We had chocolate sprinkles sometimes instead of coconut

Great recipe and video Mr Paul, takes me right back to the 70s and my favourite school pudding. You are correct about bananas as when we had it at school there was always sliced bananas on top of the jam. Great that you make the custard without eggs, so much better. Thank you, i will be doing this from now on 👏🏻👏🏻

Hank you Mr. Paul, I’ve been watching you for a while now and I’m really enjoying your recipes, they remind me of my mum and dad’s cooking. I’m born in Manchester but have lived in Australia for 64years now. I’m 67 this year so was very young when we immigrated here. I love plain, easy meals and I’ve been making a few of your meals. I’m going to make your Bakewell Slice and your Manchester Tart too, sometime this week. I’ve attempted Yorkshire pudding before and toad in the hole, cos my mum used to make both but I’m afraid my Yorkshire puddings are not very nice. I watched you making it the other day and now I’m going to have a go when I take my beef out of the freezer, yum, yum, yum, I can’t wait and I’m hoping it works as I really love Yorkshire pudding. I don’t normally comment but thought I would today, just to let you know I’m here watching. Thank you for your videos Mr. Paul, I’m really enjoying watching them and I can’t wait for you to put more videos on KZfaq. Have a great week.

I didn't know either. I'd question whether there is any leeching from the plastic of the film. A quick google shows that certain plastic wrap products are oven safe. I don't thnk I'll be trying it personally. It may depend on a specific maximum temperature, but I'd hate to consume even more plastic than I already unknowingly do.

@@bobl.1044 I’m inclined to stick to using only those or foil for any cooking or baking, not cling film. I do see plastic film used on top of pre-made meals and desserts that can be pierced and left on

I would be careful using foil for on top of food in the oven too. It eats into the food and leaves foil all over the top of your food, especially desserts. It can’t be healthy. I never knew you could use cling film in the oven for dry baking pastry either but I just think I’ll stick with my baking paper which you must call parchment paper.

Like you I'd never heard of Manchester tarts, we never had it at school and it was only when a friend made one that I tried it, I've since tried it over and over because it's so lovely! lol I had never heard of a cornflake tart either and they're really popular as well. However, I'm eyeing your lemon meringue which is my all time fave, I just love anything lemony, love a lemon posset too and they're so easy to make. Thanks for your videos, the cheese and onion pasties were great!

Hi there, Yes, you are correct, however, in days gone by the coconut available and we used in the bakery was quite coarsely shredded, but today the desiccated coconut sold is all very very fine and when toasted dries up to little hard gritty grains, so I decided it as best not to toast. But if where you live you can find coarse coconut flakes (as thy used to be called) toast them by all means. No the cling film doesn't melt. Do you mean what is the Spanish for Flour? Ordinary plain flour is 'Harina de Trigo' (Wheat Flour) and is usually in big boxes on the floor NOT on the shelf, near the sugar. The Spanish for baking powder in 'Levedora para Bizcocho (for cakes etc.) and for bread it's `Levadora para Pan'. Hope this helps. Hope you're both OK
