Seeing you start to think it looks like a graduation gown is very funny, because I was making a big barbie pink robe similar to this in a dupioni/shantung for someone and almost started from scratch because it started looking like some baptist church choir robe! All comes together in the end though 😂

If you're ever hard pressed to make custom tassels, metallic embroidery thread is really nice. Grab a couple hanks together, tie the head of the tassel, THEN take the labels off and cut the bottom loop. Regular cotton embroidery floss doesn't have the right movement, unfortunately, but sometimes you can find nylon "silky" thread that works pretty well.

I learned a few decades ago on my mom's Singer fashion mate, sewing over pins like it's nothing. Went a few years without a sewing machine until my mother in law gifted me her newer Brother machine with lots of stitches (and no internal metal frame, as far as I can gather). It did not like sewing over pins. It is much less forgiving and less sturdy than the old metal beast, though the wide variety of stitches is very nice. I sew infrequently enough that I won't be replacing it, but yeah, there's a difference.

I use a million pins while sewing. I definitely sew over them because I cannot stop every .2 seconds to remove one and hope my shape is maintained. And if I don't use a million pins, I've basted the pieces into submission.

I would just add a bit of removable or replaceable fleece or flannel into the underside of the train, that way my floors could get swept while I wear a fabulous swooshy house coat. You'd have a reason to dance and twirl because you're "cleaning the floors". When one bottom fleece gets dirty, replace with a new one, wash the old one and switch them out as needed. Violà!

I truly love the way you think! Having a house to justify the house coats is a great idea! It would have to be eloquent. Also love the idea of making tassels with the fabric threads. I had never thought of it but it's perfect! The house coat is stunning!

Gorgeous! (I want one!) And the music is fabulous. Having grown up in a haunted house, I can tell you that, while they can be lot of fun, waking up (alone in the house) to a series of weird noises, chiding the cat and discovering she is in bed with you can be... disconcerting. Echoes are better than actual spirits. Far too easy for spirits to be something you Do Not Want. I can't wait to see whatever house you find.

I love the finished housecoat! It looks like it’s rather warm but is very elegant. I know it’s meant to be worn at home, but it looks like the kind of outfit a woman searching the moors on a misty night would wear…

making the tassels out of the fabric threads is just so... one of those "why didn't I think of that" things. Just brilliant! (although I suspect unraveling the fabric could be a pain in the butt depending on what the fabric is.)

I've learned to sew in the last ten years, on machines built in the last ten years. I have sewn over pins, because I watch too many youtubers who tell me I'll live. Absolutely no problem when using nice, long, thin pins. One needle broken, which I maintain was a fluke, three pins bent six ways to Sunday, zero incidents of shamefully confessing my scandalous behavior to the machine repair shop in town. But I can only find those pins with platic heads and thus not iron over. The second I use nail-headed or glass-headed pins, which are a bit thicker, I start fearing for my life. Those suckers are not bending without a fight. Maybe the issue isn't just that older machines are utter beasts. Maybe old school sewists just have better pin dealers.

Fold over ruffles?! Genius!! Why hadn't I thought of that? Also if seeing the interfacing bothers you enough you could always cut a facing without the shoulder seam, fold the seam allowances under and handsew it over? Enjoy your holiday.

How to know when you can make a straight sleeve-side seam and when you should go for a set in sleeve. Different examples of puff and bishop sleeves and a dolman sleeve for instance. Perhaps even a historical time line. I always think how come you can look at a blouse, or sweater even, and say that's a thirties to forties kind of top. Why have I never used that method of pleating?! It looks so simple! Eventually realizing I've never simply had the fabric laying on the table as a flat thing, because I'm always pleating an existing skirt to go back into a resized waistband. But maybe ripping out the entire length of one side seam (as opposed to just the length to install pockets), and working on the pleats flat, would be a fair bit easier. Hmmm... Thanks!

Modern machines aren't built to handle a pin being bent into the machine. Thankfully mine's over 30 years old and just takes it in stride still. I remember stories from my grandmother of people sewing through their fingers, bones and all, so if a pin is that lethal, I think we're all in trouble if we need a new machine, lol.
