David was in a chatty mood that late November evening, sitting looking at his current output. He had recently got a high resolution reproduction made of his iconic 1978 picture that hangs in the Tate Gallery ‘Mr & Mrs Clark and Percy’, depicting his close friends the fashion designers Ossie Clark and Celia Birtwell.
What makes a memorable image? If we knew, there’d be many more… One answer to this rhetorical question is the mass reproduction of images, a phenomenon of the later 20th century. Very early on, Hockney realized this and took a keen interest in protecting and monetizing the copyright in his images.
