In this video I reproduce the iconic season one finale black dress Midge wears in the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. I am using historical materials and methods to construct this dress. I also dive into the history of the little black dress. Subscribe if you enjoy 20th century fashion history and sewing.
So a little background on the cocktail dress I forgot to add into the video. Mixed drinks known as cocktails were already popular in Europe by 1905, however the dress with the same name came into being in 1947 after war rationing ended and women craved luxury. The elegant tea gowns and formal pajamas of the 1930s may have been a precursor for the cocktail dress. A formal dress made from silk velvet or brocade and was about the length of a day dress began to be wore to events where an evening gown wasn’t quite appropriate. In the mid-60s people began rejecting the cocktail dress as being too conservative.
It is also clear that Zakowska took inspiration from the dress Audrey Hepburn wore in Sabrina.
P.S. I forgot to mention I am wearing a petticoat in the reveal to enhance the volume of the skirt.

You must enjoy the Nero Wolfe series--what costumes! What cars! Also the later Agatha Christies were in the 50's. My mother made her clothes and made many of these outfits. FUN!

Beautiful, my sister is the Sewist and she told me about your channel. Absolutely gorgeous. I love how you show the real deal of sewing and the need to check the process every step of the way and the fact that the patterns are often very problematic. There’s a lot of problem solving required along the way. Probably things that you all knew. Thanks new subbie! Love your channel!

Two videos in and I'm loving every second of it! The way you treat and shape the fabric to create these beautiful pieces of clothing is very exciting! I'm new to sewing, my community library had short-term classes for embroidery and sewing and a company donated some old-ish but new-looking sewing machines. They work great and the team leading the class is excellent great too. But they don't know much about old techniques on how to sew vintage clothing. So far I have found Morgan Donner, Cathy hay and your channel. I look forward to learning more about the history of garments and how to make them properly. Thank you Caroline! Happy new subscriber!

Thank you for bringing up Ms. Chanel's little dark anti-Semitism... um, issues. I realize that a giant corporation in in charge of telling her story. But, for heaven's sakes, she was living with a high ranking Nazi for a few years. Hopefully we're all capable of holding two thoughts in our head at the same time. In any event - that dress is Stunning. Good call on doubling the fabric. Absolutely beautiful work. Have you ever thought about doing a small series of how-to's? Everybody does everything differently. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

@@CarolineElizabethMartin I'm thinking if you ever need a break from a project you can throw out a how-to. Quivers ready for the bow, so to speak. Also good for the viewing numbers for when you start crossing YT milestones... Your reconstructions are lovely. And Yes. Can we please talk context when we talk Chanel. She was brilliant, but ho-boy-o, some of those 'blackamore' statures in her apartment... and then you talk about WWII... woman had her some serious issues.

@@CarolineElizabethMartin I've been playing around with what I would focus on if I had a YT channel (my 1915 hand-crank Singer 99K will play a roll, but beyond that...). So I like to think I've been paying attention whenever the YT Costume Superstars start talking shop. Check out the numbers on the stand-alone how-to's that Ms. Banner has put out. Those things are gravy. Lord knows I re-watched them enough...
