Making Muscles with Eva Foam

Here's a quick run down of how I make muscles using Eva foam.
Essentially, there are 2 types of cuts you make on the back side of the Eva foam. The single cut is a singular cut you make and then fill with hot glue. This creates the hard ridge on the front of the foam. The "v cut" is two 45 degree angle cuts that creates a soft curve on the front of the chest piece.
The only things you need are Eva foam, a heat gun, hot glue, a sharp blade, and anything you want to press onto the foam (I used a polished stone)

I know this seems really basic but do you have a template for the muscle design or even the template for the basic shape of the armor?

The technique looks incredible. But does the cutting cause weak points in the foam?
@DharezaMaramis
@DharezaMaramis 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. It depends. Any cuts that are filled with hot glue actually get stronger. And most of the "v-cuts" are glued together as well so that makes them structurally stronger as well. I try my best not to cut too far in though.

After getting the muscles formed what technique do you use to get the armor to curve around your body that doesn't melt the hot glue? Do you seal your foam, if so how?
@DharezaMaramis
@DharezaMaramis 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Anthony. Hot glue is relatively flexible. So when I wrap the finished piece around my body, it won't crack or break. Over time, the piece will stay rounded naturally. Once I finish painting, I seal the foam with polycrylic

I have been searching for something like this ! Great work! Can you tell me how thick the foam is you are working with? Is it easier to push out the muscles with thinner foam?
@DharezaMaramis

Hi. It's 10mm foam. Specifically from here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001E4XL3E/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The thinner the foam, the more pronounced the muscles. But it's a lot easier to cut through the material with thinner foam.
