It's great to see the toxic structure of the family as the "villain". It's something where nobody is really to blame, it's just how they all grew up. As someone who has just broken contact with my narcissistic grandmother (and, unfortuntely, the relatives who enable her), this movie really put it into words. I hope they watch it and realise that they can help us to fix our family

It's nice to see Stephanie's real voice and real personality after the one-dimensional Rosa in 99. I like Rosa but it's crazy to see the difference between them. She's actually like 180 degrees from Rosa lol. Very sweet, quite softly spoken, bright personality. Shows she's got range in acting.

@@icantthinkofanything798 i don't agree at all, Bruno is shown has someone who loves and protects the family, and Abuela despiste being tuff wishes the best for the family, again family business and conflicts, but no villain. If Bruno or Abuela somehow were thought to be more bad and in the end understand their mistake, i'm very glad it was not exactly like that. Yes in the end Abuela understand she did not do things in the best way, but she never meant no harm, things developed like in any normal family. And the song under the surface, man, when i thought disney could not top itself on a song, so addictive in a good way :).

@@icantthinkofanything798 Exactly. Abuela is the driving force of the conflict but she really isn't the villain. Absolutely loved this movie like every other movie Disney's produced but I couldn't help but feel a sense of "That's it?" at the end. It was such a shame that they weren't able to explore all the characters. Everyone had amazing room for development but they only managed to tackle Luisa, Isabela, Maribel, and Abuela Can you imagine if they each had a breakthrough like those four did? The burden must've been so hard to bear for all of them and in unique ways.

they also show Bruno just kind of THERE, being FINE, clearly not a bad guy I find that also kind of ruins the mystery about him they build up in the movie
@adlirez
@adlirez 2 жыл бұрын
@@arcryves2630 I would argue that him not being a bad guy in reality fits with the theme of family expectations. He's not evil, he's very severely misunderstood because of assumptions everyone makes about him and how he can see the future while everyone else can't. His power of prophecy has given him a not-so-favorable reputation in the community as well as with the Madrigals, and the purpose that Abuela Alma puts on the Madrigals is that they're supposed to use their special gifts to help people. Would you say that telling someone that their fish would die, that they would gain weight, and that they would lose their hair is considered helping? I wouldn't think so. This is why he's shunned by the family and by the community: because he failed to fulfill his purpose that is helping others using his gift. Bruno's prophecies always come true (because his gift is literally seeing into the future), and thus when the future he sees is bad, they blame him for it happening because they think that him saying it to them is jinxing it. It's like Absol from Pokemon. In case you aren't aware, the Pokemon Absol can sense when bad weather's about to happen and, out of pure intention, goes to the community that will be affected in order to warn them; but most of the time he's shunned and even hated by the people because they see his coming as a bad omen and thus his coming jinxes the entire place whenever he comes. Because of Bruno's power of prophecy and the bleak future ahead, not only do the people shun and refuse to talk about him, but the Madrigals feel that he's disappointed them and failed his purpose to help the people. These expectations pin him down to a very uncomfortable spot, and he can't do anything about it-- he's been asked about the future before, and he simply told them what he saw. When your future is bleak and there's nothing to be done about it, who else could you blame for your unfortunate circumstance-to-be besides the messenger who told you what would come to pass? It's human nature to look for something or someone to blame for the bad things that have affected you, and no more is it shown than with Bruno.

I loved that aspect! So many times protagonists go on these long quests away from their origins, which is entertaining and important, but its not the only way to show character development. Its equally as important to show a character going on important mental journey's while being surrounded by family and still being in their home.

same theory here. I was thinking maybe the reason she never got her door that day was that there can only be one door and it's already occupied by Abuela. But once the candle burned out (what was once the source of the miracle), that role was transferred to the house. Mirabel's affinity with the house and how the front door glowed made me believe she's now taken over Abuela's gift.

i think mirabel doesn't have a gift because she's meant to take over abuela. abuela doesn't have a gift (i think) and instead takes care of everyone. this is similar to mirabel, as mirabel is always looking out for others and she tried to save the house before it was destroyed. both show dedication to protect the house, and though it's for different reasons, i think it still works. both of them also seem to be the most 'in contact' with the house, what i mean is the house 'helps' them? like the house responds to them more. this is just how i interpreted it
@MaidenOfHusbands
@MaidenOfHusbands 2 жыл бұрын
I thought her gift was the house if I'm being honest. You can see the house cracking at parts where she's stressed or when the house breaks entirely like her heart got broken after she was told off that she's the one breaking the family apart. Also because of the concept art, her emotions would display throughout the house. Abuela built the house and Mirabel is the personality of the house

I feel like Mirabel doesn’t have a gift because she is the gift. I think she’s a gift to her family. A physical reminder that they’re more than their gifts and that they can love and be loved and contribute even if they weren’t given any magical gifts at all. She’s the reminder that they were a family before they were given the encanto, and that they should cherish and protect each other.

I feel like not enough people talk about how Abuela's door literally just says Abuela, and what that could mean for Mirabel. Its not her name, and presumably she wouldn't have even been an Abuela when she first got that room. It's her 'legacy' as the matriarch instead. Maybe Mirabel couldn't get a door because, as said, she's going to inherit Abuela's 'gift' of preserving the Encanto, but also because she couldn't be the new matriarch when the title was already taken? Having two 'Abuela' doors would be confusing, after all, especially when one of them is only five.

I loved how they took the time to depict a bit of the forceful internal migration and the violence that has been a part of my country throughout its history. It is a sad reality that I think every Colombian has to learn to live with and that dychotomy of living in such a beautiful country with such a terrible and brutal history is a big part of what makes us Colombians who we are and is at the heart of the magical realism that this movie is inspired by. Honestly, if the movie had been just joy and happyness I would have felt cheated. They truly went the extra mile with this one.
