I Worked in a small engine shop that took old cams and welded big blobs onto the lobes and would make a custom grind. The machine was hand built and used a series of bearings on shafts that rode an original cam and they could make adjustments to how much duration and lift they wanted to add by simply turning a few screws that lifted or pressed the riding bearings. it was attached to a grinder to bring a rough shape back to the lobes then a series of cutting tools would go to what you set the screws at on the bearings, then they would polish the lobes on the same machine with a modified belt grinder that rode the same guide machine. It's amazing what some of the old timers would come up with. They were the true mechanics and machinists that actually fixed a part not just replaced it.

Same here. We raced karts in the 80's and 90's and we ground our cams the same way. We built a "copier" that actually ground the lobes with a bearing mounted motor with grinding wheel that was water cooled. I would grind the correct taper so the lifters would rotate correctly. Could adjust lobe separation, duration etc. by some adjustment screws. Won a ton of races because we had cams that others could not get. Good times

@@Ever443 dear sir, I increased the duration in a camshaft but the taper (in stock cam) you mentioned that I can’t get while increasing the duration, so my cam make tapping noise and loss in power. Advise me how can I rectify. Can I get your WhatsApp number if you wish. Thanks 😊

How about showing how you did the second lobe without chewing through the top lobe or sprocket carrier. .Very handy skip past the only info I needed to see.

Very nice work! 👍👍 The hardening parts is really difficult ,the japanese factories had big problems with it ,according to motorcycle magazines since the 80s. My Kawasaki Z 750 twin was one of them.

As a home machinist and because you work on ATV/Dirt bike parts, I'm often depressed after watching your work. I'd so love to be able to do a small fraction of what you can, your work is amazing!! That's the cam grinder you made to fix a 5 valve YFZ head or something awhile back, I guess it comes in handy!! That cam you made is either exactly the same or very close to the ones used in my Honda ATC350X, same motor. Those 350D or 350X cams if in good shape used are selling for just about 300$. Megacycle or Webcamshafts will make us whatever we want but they often don't have any cores or it can take months to get them made; They have to cater to their Pro Motocross racers first. I'll have to watch your rocker arm video next, that's another part we cannot buy and they are very expensive even in used form. We can get old ones hardwelded and ground for about 200$ or billet for a bit more $$. I gotto learn from a toolmaker for about a year, he was awesome but it wasn't enough time. I sure wish I were your neighbor, but then you'd wish I weren't your neighbor 😁

you need to buy expensive equipment friend, the shaping of cam knobs are been made here by cnc machine !!! all those machines he uses here are too much expensive for home use,, .ALSO there lot of work behind the camera for digitizing the original part and then programming the milling CNC machine ....

Reminds me of the old xr250, they had issues or the issues owners faced if they couldn’t be bothered to change the oil and filter and check valve clearances regularly . Result was worn out cam and rocker arms. Great work , joy to watch

friend had an xr200r... snapped a lug off the camshaft, snapped three chains. chewed two sets of valves. snapped a pair of rockers. snapped the camshaft. yeah. that was a lemon... never had anything that determined to not run... no reason for it, everything specced out... but damn, it grenaded after about ten minutes, everytime...

@taylorkelley4498
@taylorkelley4498 2 жыл бұрын
Random question... Does the lathe you are working on towards the start (~5 min to ~10min) use controlled braking? Does it have a mechanical brake of some type to slow the spindle Or does it use DC breaking (maybe regenerative braking? I dont know what it is called but it is a function of many VFD's and requires a big breaking resistor)? Really just curious, that machine looks/sounds good :) and seems to decelerate at a good rate. I am in the middle of rebuilding my lathe so trying to figure all this stuff out and see what options are out there. If you don't mind sharing I would love to know. Thanks!!

If I were to do that, I'd machine the bottom lobe with a shank mounted milling cutter. Like something you'd use to cut an internal groove on a mill, just bigger and beefier. As long as you're using minimal step down, any cutter set up like a t-slot cutter would work. Can't imagine any other way, so my best guess would be he did something like that.
