To learn some more about the maker, training courses and book please see saddlestitch.co.uk. To learn how to make a wallet of your own see our course here saddlestitch.co.uk/training/w...
The design and creation process of the Lloyd Coat wallet has been a long one. Based upon the design of a 1950s wallet owned by Charlie's Grandfather, the first and most important part of our job was not to spoil the beautiful lines of the original, but to bring the design up to date, the original having been designed in a world before credit cards or other such things. A design on paper isn't the end of the story though, and the complex shapes and construction had to be brought together into a single beautiful object, with each element adding to the form, as well as the function of the finished piece. The result is a traditional wallet, the largest in our Lloyd series, but sharing the same beautiful curves that run throughout. Each one takes more than a days work to create, with every stitch meticulously done by hand, but we hope as a result will be passed down the generation as was the original the design is based on.

It's great to see a true craftsman at work in these rushed days. A trade very much like woodcarving where every part of the material is touched, a talent that is coming back. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼😊

This is true to a degree. What we do would have been less unusual 100 years ago, but it would still have been top end, expensive stuff. The wallet we based the design of this one on was machine stitched and it was made in the 50s and came from somewhere smart in London so even then speed of production was a major factor, probably along with a skill shortage caused by the wars.

Wrenchman Tooly I'll tell you why. Real leather workers can see the flaws. Not just that but there are literally thousands of people who can do it better without the drama who get paid sh1t money, despite their skill. So go suck an egg with the whole we don't know crap. Soppy music and crap leatherwork seems to be a big draw though. Maybe I should spread the word that this is how to sell leatherwork nowadays.

Equus Leather well, they used to and may still, mucklucks are traditionally seal skin with sinew sown waterproof seamed boots, they aren't really moccasins, although the terms may have a common etymology. The Eskimo and Innuit made them, I hope some still do. You could have been a surgeon, most people can't find their own ass with both hands, much less craft/create something of quality, but then few actually know quality when it pugnaciously slaps the stew out of them. Sad really. Nevertheless, do not despair, a Renaissance returns. Thanks for the reply. All the best.

I don't dig leather for uses like this (maybe for warmth and what uses the original animal uses its hide for), but when things are hand-crafted, it's a beautiful process. Not only is a product coming into existence, but someone, a person, a conscious, thinking being, paid very close attention to the expectations of the product, and ensured that the beauty of whatever it is is exceeding to those who receive it.

In the age of *mass productions* and robotics, _exquisitely_ *handcrafted* pieces carry a *_great sense of value_* not so much for its price, but *_of Passion_* poured into creating the same. 💞 ❣️💕

So few can afford to pay for that passion, though! If you are a leatherworker, and have a discerning eye, you will see that there are flaws, or aspects of this wallet that are not totally there. But that is the thing about leatherwork, there is always more to learn, skills can always be pushed further towards perfection.
