Making Piano Bass Strings

Phil Taylor has been making piano bass strings for the past 35 years. The bass stringing machine is one of his own design, as is the software for performing the calculations.
The method in which Phils strings are made removes the need to 'twist' the bass string when fitting it to the piano, producing a purer, longer-lasting tone.

I worked at the Bentley pianos for 25 years and started in the string making department making eyes it was on a much more industrial way but still skilled i did have a go at making strings its much harder the it looks glad the skill is still alive hope its passed on and not lost to modern methods

I thought it was great and the music was fine. Seems to be a skill that takes a while to perfect and then to make it look easy. Still don't know what keeps the windings from unwinding at the ends of the coils. Anyway, thanks for making this.

I have been restoring quality pianos for over 60 years. Some of the methods and statements of some of those featured regarding pianos are open to question. I have always used professional organisations to make strings to the rubbing and appropriate strings i.e. 1st and last singles, doubles and sometimes tripple sections. There is even a character who thinks that he is improving new pianos such as YAMAHA & VENABLES pianos in his own quaint way, when he is infact damaging them.

Hello, thanks for watching! Just curious, do you mean something in the video is open to question? I edited the video for Phil so might be my fault if the wordings a bit off! It's only a rough experiment anyway, one of our customers was curious. Phils been making strings since 1979 but never really had a video before. totally agree about using proper rubbings with 1st and last strings though. It's terrible some of the things you see

Very interesting way of doing! Three questions arose)) 1. Which formula for core tension are you using? ( Low tensioned core or hard?). 2. What advantages do you have by spinning from the right to the left? 3. Are results are much better of having ends of the core filed ? Instead of tapping? Many Thanks!

and where are You in ? I live in Mexico and need one set of grand Steinway bass strings. It lack all the srings off. what do You need for replacement the set of bass strings

Hi, The company is in the UK, so it might be a little bit to expensive to get strings sent out to you, sorry! We would be happy to do them for you, but it would probably be less to order them from someone in the US

I enjoyed watching the video - what is the software being used? I love the markers he uses on his machine - more reliable than marker pens that rub off. I have learnt how to make bass strings with pen and paper methods, but have heard of software that makes corrections based on piano make and model and key number.

Malcolm Lunt it's software Phil wrote himself back in the 80s on an Apple Acorn! (although hes rewritten it to Windows now...) Its been slowly evolving over the years to compensate for copper shrinkage, steel tension variables, etc. It works by "calculating the correct amount of resistance needed to produce the frequency of each note". according to Phil. He showed me the spreadsheet formula once. I decided brain surgery would be easier.
