Caroline draws on her experience working in the UK government to suggest her ideas for what governments can do differently, to embrace digital transformation and deliver better public services for citizens.
Caroline has spent 10 years in and around the UK’s public sector, working in strategy, operations and digital policy, including spells at Tech City UK and with the UK government’s trade department in London and India. She started her career in the live entertainment team at BBC Worldwide and still harbours a passion for the performing arts.
Caroline joined Public in 2016, as part of the founding team for GovStart, a new venture to help tech startups do business with the public sector. Public works with technology startups to transform public services; providing capital, networks, insight and support.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

It can be improved but the private sector will still be way better with its structure and incentives.

Governments need to do this or that. Government agencies should all be privatized. It's the only way to get the tasks currently being hijacked by them done.

Dissolving public agencies staffed with public administrators whose sole purpose in their job is public service, doesn't seem like a very smart idea. To simply replace them with for profit private institutions doesn't really sound like a win for the average citizen. For profit service will always favor those who can afford it. Rethinking the abundant restrictions, and processes that government workers must perform within would be a good start. Some government services are already privatized. How do you like toll roads, or how well correctional facilities are being ran, or how about those airports?

@@michaelross7797 The average citizen pays for all the "free stuff" and consequently earns 10's of thousands less and pays much more for goods and services. The processes that governments "perform" within, cannot be changed and updated. They are government workers and sadly directed within a system that has no self correcting features. A royal commission here and there does absolutely zero. Perhaps privatization isn't perfect but at least it encourages and rewards effort and aptitude.
