Making Rachel Maksy's FAVORITE cottagecore vintage pattern but Plus size for

First, I want to thank Rachel Maksy for allowing me usage of her footage!
Rachel has a flair for a CERTAIN Gunne Sax sewing pattern, and I just happened to know a friend that had one, and would let me trace her vintage pattern for use (in Atlanta). So after a brief road trip to Atlanta, I was all set to make Rachel Maksy's pinafore but make it plus size! My measurements are currently bust 46" and a waist 38-40".
So in today's video I am making a vintage pattern but sizing up to plus size from a bust 36". Using a vintage sewing pattern from a Gunne Sax Simplicity pattern is no small feat, but come along with me and I will show you how I made my vintage dress.

Dimity is too lightweight for the volume of skirt panels. But don't give up on the pattern. You did a fantastic job and it is very flattering on you. Make it again with a slightly heavier fabric and then you can swish to your hearts content. Hope you had a lovely birthday

The part I don't get is why we are dyeing fabric when there's already black fabric out there, with or without the flowers. One of my favorite dresses in this period, quite possibly from the Gunne Sax line or something similar, used the sweetest black fabric with a dainty floral print and I literally wore that thing out.

Way back in 1979, when this pattern was fresh and new, I fell in love with and purchased it. I made the dress out of a matt yellow rose-printed satin, and it was stunning. The heavier-bodied fabric makes all the difference in how the dress turns out, especially in the skirt volume. Now that you have the pattern sized for you, it may be worth giving it another go.

Lmao that you also used music that Rachel often uses. It was worth your trouble to trim the collar. It needed it aesthetically. And Candy and the skirt lights was magic. Totally get why you wanted to use the fabric you did. It’s lovely!

Oh yeah, the upbeat music is from Epidemic Sound (home of the royalty free music) and I love the driving beat to it. And yeah, the trim looks really cool once it is on, but it is THICC!

I remember making that dress in 1980 while in high school. It's a great pattern. I made the full length version using pale blue and white gingham check with white details. I remember fitting it to a padded strapless bra, hahaha, because at 15 I was flat as a pancake. I wore a gored taffeta half slip with it, like a flared petticoat without the ruffles.

I have had a Gunne Sax pattern for about 10 years waiting for me to size it up. I have gone up a few more sizes since I got it. It's the same pattern that "aperfecttouch" is using. I was in high school when the Gunne Sax line came out I loved them. I bought a ready made one. but I didn't wear it anywhere until the 80's for my wedding.

I love how the dress came out - especially as a sewer with similar issues in sizing/sewing errors, etc - it really spoke to my personal experiences. I think this dress would be so nice if used with a sheer black under-dress - perhaps in a voile, with long poofy sleeves and skirt, worn beneath the lights - which are genius, by the way. It would be even more "witchy" and romantic.

I think this dress is darling on you, it needs a flouncy half slip for day wear but the nighttime lights are a smash. I made a flannel full slip for my new winter dress, it's the proper length and decadently warm. The dress is cute, I want another color. I'm thrilled with sewing clothes again! Losing the bag lady look.

Thank you so much. It was fun to watch. And special thank´s for the "disaster in 3-2-1". Because I managed to do the exact same thing while sewing a vest for my husband. And undoing the seam I was telling me nonstop : Don´t punch a hole, don`t punch a hole, because there was no fabric left to do any part again... I feel myself so understood and not alone in my chaotic sewing with you. Thank you!

I need to learn how to make a full belly adjustment :P it's always fun to try ot scale patterns to yourself when you're a brick with boobs. You made me laugh more today than I have all week, I'm glad I'm not the only one who sometimes shoves stuff in the Bad Clothing Corner to contemplate what it's done while I go do something else so I have something to show for a day's work, fitting is so dang difficult! It took me a lot of photos and a Zoom meeting with a friend who knows about fitting but I now have a princess seamed bodice block, I am unstoppable! (well, until I try to do one of those curved seams on a machine, then there's a whole lot of language we don't use in front of Grandma..l I'm just gonna stick to my endless hours of handsewing, thanks)

It’s a lovely dress on you! You did a great job with the sizing up and the FBA. AND the dyeing!!!! Black is EXTREMELY hard to dye-it almost always turns grey. I LOVE that you used Rachel’s signature skirt and music. Regarding the fit of the dress and you not loving it, I think that you might have a swayback, or just a shorter waist in the back. If you shorten the back pieces, it might just give you the perfect fit.

Hello from Southern California! I am a relatively new subscriber and enjoy every video of yours, but I especially liked this one because of the appearance of Howie, whom you have described as the "management team." I had not seen nor heard of Howie before today. Judging by his attitude and general demeanor, I would assume he is at least the supervisor. Thank you for including him in your video. Howie bears an uncanny resemblance--including the wonderful pinkness of his nose--to my long-departed Captain America, may he rest in peace. The Captain was large and in charge from the late 1960s through early-to-mid 1970s.

@@dawnelder9046 it’s actually the other way round. Better for me to make it for my shoulders and hips (which are usually a 12/14) then just FBA it for my bust (which is usually a 20.) I’d rather FBA than have to draft literally everything else on the pattern. At that point I’m just making the pattern completely from scratch if I bought the size for my bust

I still have this pattern. I made the shorter version in high school. I feel so vintage.

It's very pretty, & I love it! Happy birthday too! This looks great on you, & I do hope wear it again without lights, & an underskirt. Take your week off, & rest with the puppy. We'll see you when your back. ❤️👍

❤❤❤ I love the dress and how you look in it. The bodice fit perfectly. Yes, it could use an underskirt or a little heavier fabric.

I was going to say I really liked this dress until I saw the lights, now I love it.
