IJO Sound

5 ай бұрын

So, my Akai S1000 is just sitting here in front of me, collecting dust. I haven't used it in months and months, mostly due to a lack of time. This machine requires time to be able to use it, but nonetheless, I felt nostalgic listening back to my older tunes, so I decided to finally fire it up. I always make tracks in one go; this is just how I make music. I can't come back to something I have started and haven't finished for another day, as I will most certainly not be able to finish it because I won't be on the same vibe anymore. The problem with this is - due to the other work I do, I have very little time slots to make music for my IJO project. So I started to prepare for the track the night before. I usually start with my breaks, picking up the ones I would like to use, and usually it's the amen break. I never have any clue what I am going to be making. I then open up Reason and play all sorts of melodies and chords that will be used as samples. I use some of the software synths for that. I add cassette textures and other imperfections to make it sound less clean. After I gather all the samples I feel like using, it's going to be like playing with Lego. Prepping took me about an hour or so. The next day I started to work on the track. It took me at least half an hour to sample everything into the sampler and edit and program all the programs. Once it's all done - I start working on my track. I know I am going to have to pick up my son from school in 3 hours, so I have to be quick with my decisions. This is why my music sounds very unpolished and raw. I just don't have time for that, but to be honest, I like that rawness. My programming and production also aren't as complex as they used to be; I try to be as simple as I can. But with my jungle, I believe it works.

I find it difficult to be in front of a camera, but I found another way to making videos I enjoy, and still convey the message. Haven't used my Akai S1000 in a very while, but decided to finally fire it up again and make a new tune. I explain my mindset and show my workflow. Enjoy !

Jungle loops including the Amen break are in the Reason factory sound bank Dr Rex Player loops, pitching and chopping the breaks is also easy in the Dr Rex.

Very relatable. I don't have the time for the details as much either. I used to and as such I was a perfectionist about my sound (even though it wasn't perfect) but now I focus on and get my joy from composing more than I do the technical aspects. There are many tracks I've put out that were written and produced in the same day, often within the span of a couple of hours. Great video. Very interesting. Oh and the Jungle was fire.

"Raw analog Jungle" on what is perhaps the most influential digital musical instrument of all times: the sampler. Jungle is inherently digital. That's how it was made from the beginning, and would be entirely impossible without.
@B1SCOOP
@B1SCOOP 5 ай бұрын
Bro, you sound ridiculous for lecturing seasoned producer over a single word that was clearly inserted for clickbait purposes. I also wouldn't have so strong opinion of Jungle as inherently digital music. Half of the reason these retro Akai samplers were so sought after (and still are) by Junglists and Boom Bap producers, were the onboard analog pre-amps, notable from fattening up source audio. Not to mention source signal was half if not most of the time sampled from analog sources (vinyls), overdriven, eq-ed and summed through analog mixers, all often recorded on reel2reel tape. Just as digital as modern DAW production:)

I Have Roland and Akai. The JDXI and Behringer Deepminds and this Korg have a lot in common. I also was Looking at Jungle and Garage in the sounds. Took some self made patterns from the JDXI to the older Roland and got some great Ragga and Jungle beats with special sounds moving the knobs on the Groovebox last weekend. But the Akai S1000 thing is, just like the MPC 3000, and the Yahama Su700 and RS7000 how to make those patterns and than a Akai black/Akai MPC will be great and after that the XR20 is a very good option indeed. And first of all clean Stereo sound like Minidisc is great to tune and even Hifi on youtube is great to listen to. Well done IJO Sound!

Great tune and really well put together and explained. I wonder where that particular amen comes from, it's got such an usual tone to it, so snappy and very unusual EQ. Seems to swing like no other amen break sample does. Maybe Dillinja around 94/95? I'll guess 'You don't know'

I wouldn't say I love Reason though, I believe it has some weird sound precessing going on. I am super comfortable with it, when it comes to writing music, but when it comes to mixing - I don't know, it always sounds harsh in high frequencies, no matter what I do or don't do. As if there's some kind of hidden processing going on. Whenever I try another program, like Ableton, it sounds great straight out the box, like for real, but I am not used to Ableton and I don't know how to make music with it the way I would like to...@@archivethearchives

@@IJOSoundVideo Same issue with both Ableton and Reason. But I am definitely more comfortable with Reason and have just gotten used to working around that weird audio issue. With some mixing and sound design things that are probably only specific to Reason, I usually cut down on those harsh frequencies. Then polish it up in Ableton or Audacity. It is a shame that I can see Ableton is such a solid DAW, but cannot seem to prefer it over Reason. I think the stock tools Reason comes with are just more suitable to me. And Ableton's workflow is so alien to me. At the end of the day, whatever you are doing is sounding great. So you are succeeding.

Yeah, the PSU thing is annoying.. I had one of my S1000 gone dead in the past because of the PSU, and at the time there were no way to fix it and no way to get a new Akai, so I sold all my gear and was using computers only until another opportunity presented itself getting a good S1000 which spiraled me to getting back in to hardware but with a very minimal setup, which I am currently using. It's fun, and it requires a bit of dedication, but it's worth it in my opinion.

I could speak for hours about my s950, is the 1 thing I will never sell (hopefully if I don't need 💰) The way it works once you know how to work with it and you have an actual idea or inspiration then the job is done. It requires good sound in the first place. It great how you can route to a mixer and mix eq and do send/return on some channels. With 8 out you can do actually a lot, or even just a drum in some cases. In Ableton if you not clear with your mind you can spend hours tweaking with chains of plugins etc etc. Here you cut the bullshit. And even if you do your beat in Ableton recording your gear then you sample the phrases in the akai you get the magic. I have the 2000xl the sp303 sp404, but nothing like the dynamics and timbre of a s950 or 1000 or 900.

Well, once the signal leaves Akai through digital to analog converters, it travels through cables to the mixing desk which is manipulated further with electronics and such, so a good chunk of everything is analog. But please, let me know what you think you're saying.

Artefacts and limitations are added via the hardware though, regardless of it being digital. You have to find ways to add that when purely in the computer.
