This project was a challenge by John Heisz to make his ultimate clamps and do something unique with them. I'm not sure I succeeded but had a great time with it anyway. I'd say John's original wooden clamps would be much better being lighter but these will look interesting displayed in the workshop and I may actually use them once in a while.
As always I'm happy to answer any questions.

Yes, great stuff Neil, but one point of critique: I don't think it really counts as a John Heisz challenge unless you say "polyurethane construction adhesive" at least once in your build video. 😂. Jk, love both of your channels!

Wow! I love this project. John Heisz’s clamps (these and others) are on my ‘to do’ list. But Neil, you’ve taken them to another level. I can’t recall who said it - Ruskin? Le Corbusier? - but the ultimate in making is to make things that are both beautiful and functional. You nailed that perfect combo. Love it! I particularly like the stacked leather handles. More of that please!

Really interesting touches to John's clamp. I just bought those plans last week, and am studying them prior to building. Always cool to see someone else's 'take' on a project. While I will likely not use your brass touch, I may add accent woods to my chosen primary of Western Ash. Well done! Both you and John should be happy.

It's the sandwiched leather handles with the hex/round brass bits holding them, for me. Also the most satisfying part has to be 16:22, when gluing on the second clamp pad, when you can use the clamp itself as a clamp to clamp on the clamp pad. haha

Sweet! I have over 50 of these and the wedge version of John's clamps that are used daily in a production shop by others and myself. They have proven to be strong and bulletproof. Of course the light weight of wooden ones is their beauty compared to my Bessey clamps. These are really nice, especially the handles. I'm thinking aluminum instead of brass since I have a big supply of scrap pieces. Great build!

There's a good argument for 'functionality above all else'... but then you look at things like old watchmakers' tools, and instantly dream of pieces of art that just happen to also be useful lol! These turned out great Neil!

Three qualities you want your tools to have, in order of priority: you want them to be functional (so you can use them to get things done), ergonomic (so you don’t cause unnecessary wear on your body while getting things done) and beautiful (because beautiful things make us happy).

Neil, I always love your videos regardless of the topic. You are so creative and entertaining to watch you work. After this video though, you are now hereby christened "Mr. Fancy Clamps". If you teach nothing else to your viewers, it is to get out there and try something. You show where things didn't work as you intended and what you did to fix them. I cannot state how much that helps those of us struggling with our own craft.
