This video should hopefully accompany a blog post I'm thinking of writing on how to spin a Tartan yarn. My goal is to spin a yarn with long colour sections, and a complementary yarn with shorter colour sections. The idea is that I will eventually be able to weave a tartan effect scarf using my two variegated yarns without having to change colour during weaving. That's the idea anyway!
If it works, I'll blog about it at - www.craftmehappy.com
I’ve read about spinners making roving out of a drum-carded batt by ‘zigzagging’ and then drafting it into one continuous length.
I want to spin a yarn with long colour sections to use as the warp in a woven scarf. I thought I’d remove a batt from my ‪@AshfordNz‬ blending board and try to zig-zag roving from it. This was my third attempt at zigzagging roving and it was pretty easy - much more straightforward than learning how to use a diz…
The final singles were chain-plied at the wheel to keep the colours together. You can find a close up video of how I chain ply at the wheel here - • Close up of Chain-Plyi...
I'm spinning on my Electric Eel Wheel Nano 2 You can purchase the current version of this e-spinner here* - www.dreamingrobots.com/produc...
*I'm a Dreaming Robots Affiliate. If you click through and make a purchase, I may receive a small percentage of the purchase price at no additional cost to you. Any income from my blog goes a small way toward funding future craft projects.
All of the fibres I used were either merino or silk from ‪@worldofwoolteam‬ - www.worldofwool.co.uk
I worked a layer of coloured merino, a layer of silk, followed by a thin layer of white superfine merino. I repeated this twice more but omitted the last layer of white merino.
Fibres used (all from World of Wool)-
‘Mediterranean’ merino
‘Buenos Aires Blue’ A grade Mulberry Silk
‘Raspberry’ merino
‘Jaipur Pink’ A grade Mulberry Silk
‘Magenta’ merino
‘Clementine’ Merino
‘Singapore Yellow’ A grade Mulberry Silk
‘Lightning’ Superfine merino

I just want to say thank you for your amazing videos! I wish I had found them when I first started spinning, just watching your drafting here would have been so helpful. I swear no one ever gets close enough to show what the fiber is actually supposed to do.

Yay! Have fun. 😊 I put my blending board aside for about 2 years because I thought it was only good for sampling and art yarns. I’m only now working out how it can work for large, repeatable sweater quantities of yarn.

Oh so clever, making that sticky Z shape!!! And your extensive “pre-drafting” seems like the key, to this new spinner.

Pre-drafting solves a lot of problems! I’ve been spinning a loooong time and I still find it a lot more relaxing and enjoyable to spin from pre-drafted fibre.

This video only confirms my next purchase as a new spinner needs to be a blending board. I started spinning in August and quickly got addicted. My supported spindle came with me everywhere. In November, I went to a craft fair and tried the Nano2 and the EEW6. I took the Nano2 home with me. The chance opportunity to buy an entire alpaca fleece just a few weeks ago prompted me to get combs. I’m still hungry for more possibilities and want to be able to blend that gorgeous alpaca fibre with some silk to give it a bit more strength. Spinning and subsequently knitting the yarn I’ve spun myself into lace scarves and shawls is my happy place. When I’m done working and the household chores are behind me, you’ll either find me at my Nano or with knitting needles in my hands. Thank you for showing this, I was already wondering how to get long gradients. 💖

Oh that’s lovely to hear! Spinning is the most amazing rabbit hole that you could spend a lifetime exploring! I love my blending board. I used to think that blending boards were only for creating one-off art batts but then I worked out that I could use it to turn multicoloured blends into less blended yarns and I was inspired to explore this further. I’ve never blended alpaca and silk on a blending board but I imagine as long as your alpaca is well combed before hand and you place both of the fibres on in thin layers it should work well.

Wow, that came out so beautiful. I have a blending board that was hard to blend my fiber on, and I can see I was not putting the fiber on correctly, so I bought a drum carder. But perhaps I will also go back and revisit my blending board after watching this video. Thank you so much for these videos!

Oh thank you for your lovely kind words! I’m not sure that this is the ‘correct way’. I haven’t seen any one else put it on like this, it’s just the way that works best for me. I like to draft my fibre quite thinly onto the blending board as I find it drafts much more easily later on. Have fun playing with your blending board and do whatever feels right for you. Happy spinning!

@@zoedoodle9824 you’re very welcome. I do like the higher tpi of the Ashford blending board. This is the only one I’ve tried but I feel like a 72tpi one wouldn’t do the same job of opening up silk and superfine merino fibres.
