Simon WoodburyForget Any commercial hydraulic system has an emergency release valve. Plus if anything were going to break, it would be a hydraulic seal. Fluid follows the path of least resistance.

Sandstone requires a mix of various size particles of silicates, clay, and calcite (like cement). A damp mix of 85% sand, 10% clay, and 5% lime may be a better starting point. Or even sand, clay and wheat flour.

This is true, though the lime or slaked lime (Calcium hydroxide, which will make it cement) would need to be finely powdered. In some sense the pressure will hydrate the lime anyway. Water is required for the formation of a solid mass, otherwise the only thing holding the "Rock" together is friction. Clay can be omitted if using slaked lime, as it will take the place of a binding compound. Time will need to be given once it is formed to let it dry and harden. Heat is not really needed for this due to the pressure, if anything, added heat will more likely melt some of it into more of a glass and runs the risk of steam explosions.

How to make sandstone using sand: 1.go to the beach or anywhere with sand 2.dig out a 2x2 area 3. If u looked at your inventory you should have 4 blocks of sand.. 4. Go to the crafting table or in the 2x2 crafting grid in your inventory.. 5. make a 2x2 box using the sand u got... 6.. enjoy :D

ooh, this new tool is going to be perfect for revisiting the salt and sugar experiments. It should be able to make a very clear window out of salt. If normal table salt (sodium chloride, but usually low purity with other salts added like potassium iodide) isn't as nice a hoped, try potassium chloride instead. It's commonly made to reasonably high purity and finely ground to make clear windows for IR spectroscopy.

You would need 256 sand, to make a stack of Sandstone, but then you would need a Diamond Shovel to collect the sand quickly.

They already have something like that it's ultra high performance concrete and it's not just pressure that makes it tough. It also needs a high alkalinity.

Um. The high pressure concrete as in 1500psi for instance. Refers to the pressure the concrete can withstand before crumbling under pressure. But it is not put under pressure while it is mixed you Wingnut.

No, it will not. You can put the sand in a kiln and press it and the only thing that will happen is that the sand will crushed to a powder. You cant make stones or diamonds like it will in nature. The earth took Billions of years to make them and he is trying to do that in a video of 10 minutes

the tool stopped in 1:50 and after that, all the press did was compress and bulge the piston tool. It would never have made through that ring.

Would love to see an update on this, making sandstone part 2! What does the compressed sand do in water, does wet sand act any different when pressed, does salt water make a difference? What about fine sand, course sand or sand that is dried by heat, or pressure and heat? The world wants to know how to make diy sandstone 😁

*It requires a high-temperature autoclave using a temperature gradient of 350º-400ºC, which allows for convective water currents to flow. Fill tube (we used a small brass tube) with course or fine sand, and cap with fine mesh at ends to allow hot pressurized water to flow through. Suspend with wire, and include a separate piece of seed quartz (which will be larger afterward). 48-60 hours @ pressures of 10,000-17,000 psi will produce high-quality sandstone. It will not degrade in water. Low pressure/heat will create low-grade sandstone that will fall apart in water.*

I think a major difference with real sandstone is that it was created by high pressure combined with additional minerals that were dissolved in the water that saturated the stone, acting as a cement to glue it all together.

The final rock is a great visual representation of a pressure cone, a lot like what @smartereveryday showed in their bullet impact video.

If you leave it under pressure for longer the latice structure of the sand will align more and the result should be slightly firmer. Also if you periodically re-apply pressure as the lattice settles you might be able to get something more akin to traditional sandstone. You could also try using damp sand as the moisture may help facilitate the crystals moving past each other and lining up better.

Sandstone hasn’t been simply compacted to form sandstone, but it also can undergo cementation. The grains of sand get cemented together by silica, calcite, or other agents carried by water through pore spaces.

I'm a geologist. The way that I would approach studying this material would be to vacuum impregnate it with _low_ viscosity epoxy resin. Then, make a microscope slide and study the grains under a microscope. Any university geology department would be set up to do this.

@Colin Rist I have a hydrologic press and a polarizing microscope. All I need to build is a vaccume chamber, so I can make some interesting thin sections to veiw under my microscope. The thin sections might not come out so great, but I will try.

Hey buddy, I know what would be cool. Do the same thing BUT the steel cup you first put the sand in, Heat up very hot...... add a piece of coal ( just big enough to fit in the cup ) then press it with 7,000lbs ( until the cop cools down like let it set for like 1 hour.

i think you should add a slight cone to the inside of the cylinder (middle tool part) so you can extract the stone and the tool easily by removing the bottom tool part and contiue pressing with the top tool part trough the middle part :)
