The reason why I love this show it's because it is the show where the hosts have the most fun, and it all just seems so natural, since there isn't a big corp behind it. I hope it goes on for years

Agreed, it feels like other than ad reads and maybe the intros it’s all unscripted. They have an idea, film a quick intro explaining what they’re gonna do, and then they just do it with a camera rolling

I was surprised Jason said cut and then glue. Everyone I’ve seen do it does glue and then cut. You close the book, glue the amount of pages you want, you can choose how many pages by just closing that many. After the glue dries then you cut through the book. This way the pages are steady and don’t wobble everywhere. This way the cuts are clean. Also every time you make a cut a lot of pages get cut through. After you’re done just glue the pages on the inside of the book. Takes a lot less work haha. It’s also a lot more neat.

My college roommate has one of the soda can compartments, except his is an Arizona can! He used it to hide certain things that weren't allowed on campus, our one concern was smell permeating out of the can in case we ever took it out. One day there was a random health and safety check and we didn't realize that the can was out so our RA went into the room and walked right by the can, it totally got rid of the smell and she thought nothing of it. We had a very painful laugh after she left.

Another idea is to get a hand-cranked side-cutting can opener, which cuts the rim in half, so that you can use the top of the can as a lid, that snaps back into the can. Great way to make can safes for friends as gifts. Canned tuna, veg, chili, any cans like that will work. I've made lots of them. You can use adhesive felt to make the insides nicer.

My family owns a small cabin in a town that was once a booming mining town circa 1900. The town is built up around the base of a mountain, so the back of the cabin is against a rock wall. There's a false wall hiding an entire "bunker" we call it. It's about 6 feet high, 5 feet wide and maybe 10 feet deep. It was once used to hide liquor during prohibition.

My favorite version I've ever seen of this is the hinge blind. You unscrew a hinge from a door frame, carve out a compartment behind it then screw it back down. Depending on the screw pattern, you may have to cut off some screw heads and glue them to the hinge, but this shouldn't hinder the door's use.

I remember back in highschool I had a study hall at the end of the day. The problem is, I'd finish everything in class and have nothing to do then. So I took an old book, flipped to the middle of the book, hollowed out enough to put my phone in, and then when the teacher would come buy, I'd flip a few pages over so they'd see only real pages. Worked great!

I've "carved" 2 book safes by myself. It took a while, but worth it. I didn't leave any pages intact, though. I figured that if someone pics up the book, those intact pages at the beginning won't prevent anyone frome figuring out it's a safe! Also, I glued 2 magnets, one on the cover and one on the pages, to keep the book closed. Oh, and I found that gluing the outside before cutting the pages helps a lot in the cutting process. The other safe ideas are great!!!

Would it not be more effective to glue the pages first and then cut the shape, that way you don't ruin/tear the individual pages? I'm not saying it would, just wondering.

How do you glue the inside if it's not cut? I guess you could glue the outside first, but I don't think it would hold during the cutting phase.

I have made a few Book safes and what I do is glue the outside first (glad wrap the top and bottom + extra pages) then use a drill to drill the corners out. I also cut out an extra good page and stick it to the bottom and 2 of space top pages and cut little into them and fold them down over the raw edges.

When making the book hiding place I found it’s best to keep so many pages at front loose, then put wax paper between the loose pages the bottom pages you want to glue, make sure the wax paper is big enough. Close the book get 2 pieces of wood same size as book one for top, one for bottom, then clip each corner of the book tightly and take Elmer’s glue and paint on Thin coats of the glue. Make sure each layer drys before adding more and also add more clips in between other clips only on the sids that book opens, it takes a few days in my opinion to glue it right. Then when glued and dried take everything off except the wax paper, go to the glued pages and with a ruler mark on all pages and depending on how big the book is you need at least 1/2 inch all the way around or almost to an inch. Take New Very Sharp razor blade you prefer and can handle with metal ruler or something like it to cut along on each side(they are glued on all sides so don’t move like yours did. Get so far down and if you have a Dremel with a bunch of different attachments use what you think will work for you, the corners are the hardest for me, I have these round ball think diamond? infused tips that I find works the best to help with the corners. And make sure you don’t cut to close to Any side really but be mindful of the spine side. I try to go with as big as book as I can.

Great vid, but can I make a suggestion? You guys should buy a jig saw. For the amount of times you guys cut and build stuff, it'd be a really easy tool that speeds up the work. For example, in this episode, you could have drilled a hole at each of the corners of where the container was gonna go and simply done this: Step 1: Cut out 2 templates for the box on a peice of wood. It should have the same dimensions as the book. Step 2: Take a large chunk of pages that you want to cut (enough that the jigsaw blade can run through all of them + the 2 templates). Clamp onr template on the top of the pages and one on the bottom. Fold the covers & clamp them down. Step 3: Drill Holes in the corners of the paper and the template where you will be cutting. Step 4: Cut out the block of papers Step 5: Repeat for all the parts you want to cut. Also, a Jigsaw would keep Brian from hurting himself so much. Just make sure everyone is wearing proper woodshop safety glasses (not those goggles you guys wear).

It helps if you use clamps to compress the pages and hold them all straight up and down. And you should also drill your corners so you can use a straight edge to make straight cuts on the sides of your hidden space. (I made one of these in '88, out of my copy of Das Kapital, and I can't tell you what I used it for, but it worked a treat.)
