5 ESSENTIAL FINGERPICKING EXERCISES - mybgi.net/FPExercises
Tuesday Blues #266 - mybgi.net/2lcKPbg
Ragtime chord progressions sound amazing but they can challenge your understanding of chord theory. I mean, how can nearly every chord in a progression be dominant? The short answer is, it sounds good because it sounds good!
But we get a bit deeper into why it sounds good in this lesson. It’s based on a concept called secondary dominants where we use the V7 chord of a V chord to precede our target chord. The chords are outside of the key, but they sound great because of the strong relationship between a chord and a dominant 7th chord built a 5th above the starting chord.
Yes, it can be confusing, but hopefully, this video will help you make sense of this.

My favorite ragtime blues tune (today) is definitely They're Red Hot by Robert Johnson. It's the outlier in his catalog but it's the first ragtime blues tune I ever heard and I was hooked immediately. But what about you? What's your favorite ragtime blues tune?

I'm so glad you mentioned Blind Boy Fuller, he is so overlooked and underrated. Fuller was an absolute genius

He was so good. His playing was top notch and I always think about what an entertainer he must have been too. I think his recordings capture a lot of energy that would have been amazing to see in-person.

@@BluesGuitarInstitute I can only guess how cool it must have been to see him in person. I have had so much fun learning and playing his songs, my favorite from Fuller is the piccolo rag. My wife plays harmonica with me on songs like big house bound and pistol slapper blues. Sonny Terry was an incredible player as well and we have so much fun playing these old songs.

I've started adding a few ragtime numbers to my repertoire, e.g. Dark Town Strutters Ball. Great fun to play.

Enjoyed this! How about a lesson on the Carter Scratch method? Where Chet Atkins used his thumb for bass, fingers for melody, Mother Mabel plucked the melody on bass notes, fingers for rhythm....

Curious your thoughts on “Oh Daddy” done by Bessie Smith and Clarence Williams and later Odetta. Would you consider this a ragtime blues and if so, what is the best way to think about the structure if you are not fingerpicking, but trying to play in a jam or band setting with soloing?
