In this video, I am showing you how I made espadrille soles from braided rope. I am working by an old booklet from around the first world war, which you can download from my blog: ofdreamsandseam.... Also visit my blog for more posts and photos on shoe-making!

thank you for this tutorial! I love the idea of a natural fiber sole that will last! The pliers are a food idea, I saw one guy use sort of a thimble for the palm of his hand. it was like a metal circle with an elastic bracelet on each side with the circle in the center of his palm for pushing the needle through

It's called a sailor's palm! They're very useful for this kind of heavy work.

I just happened to have it, but recently saw one exactly like it in a fabric and notions store - it is a needle for weaving and actually quite common!

Fantastic video, thank you so much for sharing! I was straight out crocheting soles but this looks like it would allow for much more accuracy in shaping. Thank you again!

Oh, I am very sorry, but I really don't know anymore. I started braiding with about 3-4 meter long strips, as long as my room, basically... and then I had to add on some more, which isn't a big deal at all. Whatever works best for you. Extremely long strands are hard to manage...

I have to say this is very neat. I would like to build my self a pair of sandals that will last for ever I know it is a tall task but I really like stuff that last for ever. am thinking I can use cotton rope and it might be a little more durable. great video thanks for sharing

iwantosavemoney You are welcome and I totally understand - I love durable things, too! Whatever you use for the braids, if you glue a thin rubber sole or at least strips of rubber on the bottom, you will protect the braided soles and they will last even longer...

You should be able to buy/order it from a regular sewing notions store - it is a needle used for weaving.

Hello, thank you so much for posting this! I was wondering if you could post another video teaching how to make an alpargata. I have looked everywhere but couldn't find any video and I really would like to learn how to make one. Your videos are the best so far. I would be very thankful if you could teach how to make and attach the upper.

The giant needle may be a doll assembly needle. Used to stitch through from joint to joint?

you could just go a few inches then sew it to the last spiral and so on... instead of trying to go through it all?

greetings, I had time tonight to watch your video, i appreciate all the ways you took the time-honored process for making espadrille soles and simplified it. It would be nice if there were sturdy crochet loops along the top edge so the upper could use them to be stitched directly to the sole, as in the "Alpargatas". I will put a link to this video on my blog, with gratitude and fascination, sharon

Thank you for this I wonder if the needle is a sail-maker's needle ? A sail-maker's palm might also help save your hands

Oh, I just saw this comment, thank you so much! Yes, this was just the sole-work, how the upper will be attached is yet to be determined! :-)

Thank you thank you for sharing this! I've been experimenting with hemp soles for some time, and I've been wishing for this very information. Now, where to find a giant needle like that. Deep appreciation.

This is great! Would you mind telling me a bit more about the thickness of the cord you braided the rope with? I’m making my own and I’m not sure what cord to purchase.

Good video! But on the 1.54 - you did not show how did you start to make the sole from the from A to Z .... its only shows when there is an oval already.....so if you can separate video for it - that would be great! Thank you!

Did you make a distinction between the right and left sole or are both the same? And how did you determine the size?

Good question! I finde it easier to attach the shoe to the sole with hidden seams this way, and the cord I used for the soles is quite rough. But you could just attach the upper part of the shoe to the soles directly, too, if that is your preference! Sorry for the late response!

***** Thanks for your response ^^. Ok , this must be really thick cordage. I have made two espadrille-style soles from hemp cordage. They are much thinner and more flexible. Just have to put them to the test and see how long they last.
