REWIND BACK TO 2009: Meet the step-parents and their step families. Welcome to the turmoil that can happen after the divorce, when two families become one. Back in the 70s, in the days of the Brady Bunch on TV, they were a novelty. A laugh a minute. These days, they're much more common. One in five Australian children now lives in a step-family. And the laughs can be few and far between. It's no picnic. In fact, while many do manage to make a go of it, the majority fail. Karl Stefanovic reports on the highs and the lows, why it's not always one big happy family.

My stepchildren and I were friends. They had a Mother and I always respected that and consulted her on important matters relating to them. We're now both divorced from the childrens father but we're still friends!

It's not difficult if you are sensitive to needs and feelings and have self-control. Live by the Golden Rule. Steps give care. Parents discipline. Keep it separate. It's a different dynamic.

My two cents- The 1st couple: Had 2 extra kids that were totally unnecessary to prove their love or to unite them; young kids only add to the conflict and alienate the older kids form their parents because they are soooo needy. Young kids add to the chaos, plus the mom has given up on keeping order in the house and the outside mess reflects the status of the family's relationship, she frowns often and seems to be picking on her oldest son. The 2nd couple: No small kids to distract them from this new family dynamic, home organized and clean, parents say they "work hard to keep order" and they have a calendar to prove it, mom and dad make their teen kids a priority, again, no babies to disrupt it all, lots of smiles and laughter. Good luck to everyone!

Step parenting can be challenging, but so is life, .... even on a good day. As mentioned in this video being a friend is probably the best thing you can do. Leading by example is the best way to implement your personal ideas/beliefs. My late wife used to say the biggest problem on the planet is "poor parenting". She left a hole that is massive. However no one in this family can say they never felt Love from her. She truly was the "big heart" of the home. Every person on the planet needs ♥ and lots of it when they are growing up. God can help because God is Love. Share the Love (kindness, tenderness, gentleness) those that are brought into your life are looking for it, and it will come back to you. You reap what you sow! ☺♥†♪♫ 8-7-2023

I hope that love is enough because it seems like a huge upheaval for everyone..with so many step families breaking up, more training is needed for parents before they blend their families together..seems like a lot of energy is used to get the kids on side..maybe other options need to be considered such as living apart together (LAT)..wish everyone the best of luck 😮

@DonnellOkafor0304 Why? I loved being with a father of 4. I love children and was prepared to be in it for the long haul, ie. chip away at the relationship with each child gradually. Eventually things didn't work out with us. I'm a city girl, he's a country guy, but his children weren't a deterrent to me. I was a pretty, young, single girl with no kids. Now I have one child and would happily get involved with a man with more kids. The more love the merrier, imho. I don't get the hang up.

No family is perfect, always depend on how us adults parents treat the children, step or piologycal children they're all the same, you make a decision to be together nor the children, met a real human a loving father with his son and I had a twin girls, now all grown up doing fantastic in their lives succeed more than we expected, then we have our more two beautiful kids together, treat them the same brought them up in a loving steady home Thank God that we never gave up seeing our kids now makes us more proud parents ever, love them like no other is the best you can becoz they always remember that ❤️ 💙 😊

Now, why would this couple bring two more kids into the mix ?😮 my guess is, the only thought that went into the decision, is ,"We have to have A child TOGETHER"

Can’t think of a worse kinda hell. Kids are monsters even when they’re your own - let alone when they’re second hand/someone else’s. Cannot fathom a good enough reason to hook up with someone who has kids.

@NineNineOne the good thing in both these scenarios is that both couples had children of their own with other partners which makes sense despite it being hard, the one where there's a massive power imbalance lack of rights respect and the inundated drama is when one of the partners doesn;t have kids and the other one does, I'm a childfree woman who doesn't ever want kids and will NEVER date a parent (dont have to anymore since I'm engaged to a childfree man) some of my childfree girlfriends are stuck with spouses and stepkids and they've all collectively said they wish they knew what they were getting themselves into

I was married for 13 yrs and we both brought kids to the marriage. Sadly I was better to his kids than he was mine so that marriage ended. I was closer to his kids than he was. They still came to visit me after we divorced. But never visited their dad. But then again I did everything with them. I am remarried and again my husband brought 2 kids and I have 2 so together we have 4 and we love each others kids as though they were ours together. We don't have together kids and now all our kids are adults. But his kids do call me mom. I am especially close with his daughter. Nothing worth having is easy. And if you want it to work bad enough then you do what you can to make it work.

There has to be a conversation about mutual respect. And the new parent coming in needs to love that kid regardless of how she feels about anything that has to do is anything else. All a kid needs is a good support system lots of love good food Exposure to as much of the world as you can offer them And should be taught to have an open mind and be willing to hear Opinions others and their own and learn as much as they can from everything.

Unfortunately with my situation, my stepdaughter seeing her father so happy and in love, her jealousy turned into hatred towards me. She involved his whole family they interfered. Was also ostracised from family functions. She chose not to be part of a blended family. Move forward 17 years later, she remembered she had a father when he was at end of life. Too little too late. I’m sure she has regrets she’ll have to live with.

One of the teen boys is just trouble would be in any family, to hit a cricket ball to strike anyone needs some kind of attention. He is not necessarily typical to project out to all step-families.
