Today we're making a Dragon Skin Timascus Ring. This ring starts as two different titanium alloys. These alloys are combined to create a unique scale like (or dragon skin) pattern. The alloy is made and then forged in a sheet. We take the sheet and cut out a small square. The square then gets rounded on a belt sander. This allows it to be the proper shape to fit in the lathe jaws. From there we drill a hole and cut the inner diameter of the Timascus ring with the lathe. We then cut the outer diameter and give the ring a rounded profile. Our second to last step is to use the dremel to sand a premium finish. Finally, we use the torch to flame anodize the Timascus making our Dragon Skin Ring complete.

And here I was thinking "oh cool a not round out side form..." and you rounded it.... then you got dimples and here I was thinking "oh cool dimples how do you polish that and not lose them...." and you smoothed them off... (CLEARLY a beautiful ring. Watching this, and then seeing the other comments there are so many avenues of possibility there).

Dude I am in the process of making my Fiance's engagement ring out of titanium, (the idea was inspired by your ring making vids, and I have used one of your mandrels) and I LOVE this ring!! While I was at school, I machined my ring blank out of bar stock, and its ready for other work to be done. All the machinists I know are terrified of the stuff, so I've earned mad respect around the shop for being able to work with Ti precisely. I've grown to love working with it even though its so tough (no pun intended lol). Its such a wild material with such cool properties. I'm planning on heat blackening some portions of it (like deep recesses and the lining face. I'll polish other areas back out to the silvery gray). Do you have any tips for getting an even black color? I know that with steel heating it to cherry red and then dunking it in motor oil achieves the effect, but what is your experience with Ti? I have a few scrap pieces to try any operations I'm not sure about, but I wanted to ask your advice
@PatrickAdairDesigns
@PatrickAdairDesigns 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard that the same process works with titanium but I’ve never actually tried it before. More steel I know using dirty used oil works much better. Also cleaning the ring first and heating evenly. I love that you’re doing ring making, keep it up and good luck!! 👍

Can you improvise with gluing it on to a piece of wood that has a bolt in it and chucking it up in your drill it's a bit of a dodgy method you'd have to be careful but it is one alternative to a lathe
