This is my first cutting board. An interesting pattern emerges from the flowing "S" shape and works really well with the high contrast of maple and walnut.
I made a few changes from the original, but I would be remiss not to link to the post were I first saw this project back in 2009: lumberjocks.com...

I am another person who doesn't have any real woodworking (or resin) tools, and yet I watch this channel with great interest. A) Peter's personality is fun and entertaining, and B) it's fun to watch things being made, even if you don't want to make stuff yourself. I used to sit in my Grandfather's shop and watch him make stuff for hours. I learned to do some wood stuff, which is sufficient for my interests, but so far have never gotten into woodworking at this scale, myself. But I LOVE work... I can sit and watch it for hours! LOL And face it - this kind of content with real people doing real-world things is 100% more interesting than 95% of EVERYTHING that is on television, made by studio writers about fake people and fake personalities and fake(mean) humor, and fake values...

A neat twist on this is to use strips of wood the thickness of your band-saw blade as a way to fill in the gaps in the curves. They make it easier to mate the two surfaces since they replace the amount of wood that's lost by the cutting process. Love this board and I'm going to try it myself!

For Christmas my dad made my mom my sister and I piano cutting boards that were 3D looking. I think the plans are in maybe June or mays 2017 of woodworking mag. I grew up watching my dad make things like this. I have 3 cutting boards that my dad made ice cream scoop bread knife wine cork screw and what he calls a mood maker which is a wood piece that slides onto the wine bottle then has 2 holes where the wine glasses slide into so u can carry it all together. I love ur videos.

Hey Peter, I don't know much about woodworking, but I do know some things about making cutting boards. A good tip, especially for non-end grain cutting boards, is to soak the board in water for 30 seconds and let it dry, then sand the board at your final grit, and repeat this two more times. When the boards get wet the grains are raised again. Also, you really wanna soak that mineral oil in unless your concerned about using a lot.

So, I got an idea from some of the other comments. I don't know anything about wood or epoxy or how things might splat spectacularly, but it would be cool if you did a drunken chess board, but instead of putting them together, put only the dark pieces on top of a piece of light wood and glue them down. Then, put the entire thing in a mold and pour epoxy into it. The clear epoxy in the holes with the light wood showing below would be the light squares, with the dark wood being, of course, the dark squares. And the idea to make the pieces out of random nuts and bolts would be incredible! Maybe to solve the problem of not being able to glue the strips together to make the second set of cuts, you could use more double-sided tape instead of glue. Or tape them down to a hunk of cardboard.

Great cutting board. Just a thought on the blade drift issue. How about starting with slightly longer and wider stock, cut your curves with a router (maybe a 1/4 of an inch deep), band saw through the channels made by the router, then clean up both sides of the curves with a profile bit in a router. The channels made by the router will give you plenty of room for error on your cut and the profile bit should clean it up enough for gluing. Plus, your curves can't be anything but identical that way. Like I said, just a thought. I'm definitely going to make some of these! Great project and great video!
@MrBez007
@MrBez007 9 жыл бұрын
Paul Butler the two curves will not mate together if cut with a router, they will be out by the diameter of the bit used.
@paulbutler101
@paulbutler101 9 жыл бұрын
o bez Ah, yeah. That makes sense. Come to think of it, when I saw this technique being used, he was adding a curved inlay. The inlay must have been the width of the router but so everything fit. That's too bad, I want to make one of these but I am not accurate enough with my band saw. I was hoping I found an easy way. Oh well, back to the drawing board. Or cutting board in this case.
@peterbrownwastaken
@peterbrownwastaken 9 жыл бұрын
Paul Butler Yeah. It's less about being accurate and more about good tensioning on the blade. When I used the wider blade it was much less of a match than the smaller blade. So, smaller blade and less aggressive curves and you should be okay

I make a checkered cutting board in woodshop for school and it turned out amazing! To even be qualified you had to have and A in the class (There were only 2). The other kid didnt put enough glue on his and when he ran it through the bandsaw to cut it across it exploded into a bunch of shards. My teacher taught me to soak the project then let it dry overnight, then sand it down the next morning before applying mineral oil. It allows to oil to soak into the wood better and it helps it last longer :)

@peterbrownwastaken 9 жыл бұрын
DerpyTrollGamer Yeah, end grain REALLY soaks up the glue. Your teacher is right. It's called raising the grain and is important with water based finishes or any project that will be exposed to water. I skipped some steps for the sake of video time...

I love this, and I think that gluing them together will make it stronger because otherwise you have glued end grain to end grain, which is not always a strong joint.

Just catching up, keep forgetting to watch this one. I love how it turned out, unbelievable that it started as two flat boards! That's a great project, I'm going to have to try that out one of these days.

nice video footage of your first cutting board. Funny it's a first project / right of passage and you took it well. Last year I made nearly a dozen end-grain for my first boards ever and gave them as x-mas. I found a product called salad bowl finish that worked amazing (exp. for non-woodworkers to care for). Food grade after it cures, let it soak...fill a few gaps even.. it fills the pores with food grade...but you sand the surface off so moisture can't be trapped inside. All the perks of end-grain with a ton less upkeep.

kelvartis That cool! I've used that before in woodturning! (The general finishes brand) Thanks for the information. I'll stow it away for the next cutting board!

Peter Brown I think it's a great way to bring a very common woodworking project into the realm of reasonable to care for...for the non-woodworking friends of ours.

I love the effect that your double has created! I was a little concerned after the second series of cuts, where you then had to reglue them with only end-grain connected to more end-grain. But then doubling up the overall thickness was a great idea.
@peterbrownwastaken
@peterbrownwastaken 9 жыл бұрын
Olly Parry-Jones The original design called for 1/8 strips between the patterns which would have added some long grain surface. I think it needed to be thicker, so it all just worked out. Some how... :)
