Watching this film for the first time was the moment that I realised that I was going to fancy Jamie Bell. The toughness and courage of Esca was realistic because of the real-life toughness and masculinity of Jamie Bell. My interpretation of the film is that it was (unrequited) love at first sight when Marcus first saw Esca and saved his life. Esca’s loyalty and friendship to Marcus was intense but platonic.
