Making a custom, rare, tone wood drum shell to replace the basic laminated shell I got from Amazon. This 30 stave, thick drum shell is made from the tone wood, African Padauk. The red color of the wood and the heaviness of this hardwood make for fantastic and beautiful replacement. I think I might make more to add to the set!

Did you cut snare beds on the bottom side of the bearing edge? This is one of the most important steps for getting the metal snares to sit flat against the resonant head. Usually snare drums without snare beds (or very shallow beds) will have a lot of sympathetic snare “buzz”. Otherwise, this was the best build I’ve ever seen for a non drummer. You are a true craftsman.

Good catch! I didn't record it but I did file down the snare beds to allow for free movement of the snare ribbon on both sides. The throw off clamp worked pretty well then to eliminate the stray rattles with the clamp down. I'm more of a woodworker than a musician, but it does actually sound pretty great! Thanks much for watching!

This is just the info I needed. I'm a luthier, and play in a band with a drum savant. He's been hounding me to make him a snare for the past decade. I think this is the year he gets his drum. Thanks alot. The rounding jigs are the lynch pin in this whole project. Yours are straight forward.

Thanks man! I appreciate the wide set of skills a luthier needs to do their craft... part woodworker, part engineer, part musician, part grief counselor when somebody breaks a guitar neck. Wishing you the best on this project! Let me know how it goes...

Thanks! It actually sounds pretty great but the camera microphone doesn't do it justice... Now, I need more practice!

Very nice job! That's a lot of hard work but it looks great! I have been thinking about re doing my circa 1969 Slingerland drum set using black walnut veneer. Time will tell, Haha. Thanks for sharing this video!

Kinda like the idea of updating an old kit with nice veneer! Keep me in the loop if you try it and let me know how it turns out!

Nice job. But how about some sealer, pore fillers and use nitrocellulose lacquer. Wet sanding and polish.

Hi! See the pinned comment on top but filed down the tracks for locking ribbon movement

Your beautiful craftsmanship is worthy of MUCH better hardware. Drum Factory Direct (DFD) has pretty much everything you'll need for upgrades. Those Griffin snares are beginner quality only, with thin pot metal.

Thanks man! I admit it was more of an experiment to focus on the wood and make a good sounding shell... The hardware was absolutely the cheapest. I appreciate the shout out!
