Cool series! Please upload more sound design focused videos like this! Not an expert, but I was thinking: isnt the FM in phase plant done via modulating the phase parameter of the carrier rather than the shift? The addition of upper bands by using c:m ratios can then be achieved by increasing the harmonic parameter on the modulator, rather than syncing shift with yet another signal. This would be phase modulation rather than FM technically speaking i believe, but apparently even original DX7 is PM in actuality. PM (labelled as FM on serum, fm8 etc.) keeps the frequency stable which tracks across each note played, and results in more usable musical timbres, without the need to fiddle with sync or laboriously mapping specific fm depths for each note as suggested. Maybe there is a reason why DC is opting to do it this way? The "true" FM shown here might be a bit more difficult to produce usable outcomes, plus probably a nightmare when using algorithms with more than 2 operators or complex waveforms. True FM ive read somewhere is not often implemented on synths, possibly for these reasons. Also, in regards to the noisia reference - in the noisia tutorial where martijn deconstructs diplodocus, they briefly show a serum patch with fm from osc b, which is also just PM and not this true FM method. Anyways just some thoughts, cheers!

You raise a fair point, I call my approach here 'Frequency Modulation' in that I am using the frequency of one waveform to modulate the frequency ('shift' is technically a detune control on PhasePlant) of another waveform - but my aim isn't to recreate a traditional FM synthesis model. In any case, as you correctly point out, in digital synthesis FM is actually usually in fact PM (due to performance issues and potential problems in using oscillators with 0hz in complex algorithms). My aim is to generate interesting tones and oscillations on bass sounds. Here I use a macro to control the 'FM Control', using Sync to modulate my waveforms, but I could also use 'shift' or the semitone or harmonic controls and I could of course use these to modulate the Phase instead - which produces a similar-ish result. So lots of ways to approach this, each with their own nuances. In general my workflow is to experiment with these types of modulations to make nice chunky bass sounds suitable for DnB and then resample. Part of what I like about this, is finding different textures across various notes caused by the often complex "c:m" interactions which wouldn't be the case if each note had specific FM depths set-up. That's not to say I haven't tried to do that as well, but to date I haven't found an effective way to do that, as you say it's super fiddly if not impossible! Glad you enjoyed the video :)

@@dcbreaks6932 Hey DC Breaks - Thanks for the reply! That makes sense. So in essence youre trying to capture rarer moments, that might not be possible with regular PM ratio method - from what I understand. Sort of like capturing lightning in a bottle in the midst of chaos type experimentation. Very cool, and i admit i haven't done it this way before so ill definitely give it a go. I can see how this is a method/workflow towards finding signature sounds. Thanks for sharing your knowledge/experience, and again, appreciate the response. Can't wait to see your next uploads with dBs. Have a good one!
