In this video, I show you how to use a DIY fabric stiffener on fabric so that you can use the fabric for earrings with your Cricut. The fabric stiffener does two things: it makes the fabric less flimsy and it holds the fabric fibers together well so that you have less frays and fuzz (like with faux leather). Some tips for you:
Wait until your fabric is thoroughly dry, waiting until the next day before you use it.
Iron or press your fabric to make it very flat. It will adhere to your mat better this way.
Tape is your friend. Use tape to hold the fabric down to your mat. Since the fabric is treated with the stiffener, it tends to get pushed around a bit by the blade if you do not adhere it down very well to the mat.
If your fabric has much of a texture, use strong grip tape behind it for extra hold.
I cut my fabric with the pretty side up. In case the fabric did not cut all the way through, I wanted to be able to snip off the back side instead of the front side. I do not know if this made a difference, but it worked very well for me.
If you know how to make it where the rotary blades meets back up with itself as it should, please let me know:
Settings I used:
Light Faux Suede - Light Fabric (Like Silk) Setting
Thin Cotton Fabrics - Light Cotton Setting
Upholstery/Curtain Fabrics/Denim - Heavy Fabric (Like Denim) Setting
Faux Leather - Shimmer Leather Setting (with more pressure added)
Burlap Fabrics - Burlap Setting

This is a great idea for people who make their own cloths, they can use their scraps to make matching earrings.

Yes, you could do so much with the small scraps you have left! Thanks for watching and for your comment, Barbara!

I press the flashing Cricut button to run the cuts again with the rotary blade to make sure it has cut all of the threads including any it missed the first time. You have to do this BEFORE you press the arrow that ejects the mat.

Thanks Cathy! That's a great question. It will be several months, but it gets really humid in Kansas in the summer:) I have used this fabric stiffener on burlap for other types of crafts and it has held up very well to the humidity. Not sure about rainy weather. Thanks so much for watching.

Awesome tricks and tips. I did try it on a piece of leather that was a bit thinner worked perfectly but did turn the back side a horrible ugly brownish green color so probably won't try it again on leather but will definitely try it on other types. I LOVE the denim!!
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 4 жыл бұрын
Oh no, I am so sorry it turned the back an ugly color. We are thinking alike because today, I decided to try one coat of it on the back of some very flimsy genuine leather with a really fuzzy back. It dried much, much darker than the original color of the back, but it is still a good color. I have not yet cut it into earrings because it needs to dry more thoroughly. Thanks for watching and your comment!

Thanks for this. Oh, the options! I haven’t yet used my rotary blade and would appreciate the tip for getting the rotary blade to cut all the way around, please.
@MakingwithMarilyn

I am going to look into it. Maybe I need to calibrate the machine or something. I am hoping a viewer has a good suggestion. It looks like the blade cuts all the way around, but ends the cut either slightly below or slightly above where it started so it just kinda "misses" where it should end. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, and I hope you make some awesome earrings!

Question, once you apply the stiffener, can you use the bonding material to double back the earrings? Also, can you apply Iron-On???
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 2 жыл бұрын
I feel confident that you could still use bonding material like HeatNBond after using the stiffener (after it dries). I have found that for many fabrics, you can simply use HeatNBond to double back the earrings and that makes a big difference without needing the stiffener. I also believe you could using iron-on after using the stiffener. If you try either of these, let me know your results please. Thank you for watching!

Does the glue backing prevent fraying?
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it helps immensely 🙂 Your material needs to dry for hours though until it is very stiff. I wait overnight.

Would this work if I cut my shapes with a die cutter?
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have a die cutter and have used this method with it. You just want to make sure you let it try for hours until it feels firm and hard. I would suggest overnight.

Can I make this with Cricut explore Air
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 2 жыл бұрын
I use the rotary blade for these, which does not work with the Cricut Explore Air. However, if you are able to cut bonded fabric with the regular blade, then you may be able to. If you try it, let us know how it comes out. Thanks for watching.

That's alot of work for pair of earrings . and what are you using the contact paper for ? Most it would be for fuzz that gets stuck on the matt. But your cutting design cut up ?

You are right. The contact paper is probably overkill since I have the bonded side down and the fabric side up.

ok i'm confused i thought the maker could cut this stuff without any preperation. i thought that was the whole point of the rotary blade. i'm new to cricut so hope it doesn't come across snotty i'm really curious cause i'd like to make some fabric/faux leather earrings and key chains!
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 4 жыл бұрын
You are correct, the maker will cut fabric, but it would be really flimsy to use as earrings. The fabric stiffener allows them to hang well. It also makes for a more crisp cut when working with fabrics. Thanks for watching and for your question.
