Here coming from 60 cc pro Husky and Stihl camp. The rip cutting of the big stump: that is impressive performance. Mind you a big pertrol saw can be stalled easily. It depends on how the chain has been sharpened, how relatively short are the dust teeth. I still wouldn't drag this to woods for a full work day with a backpack full of batteries - looking at the cut volume in the video a 8 Ah battery equals about half a tank of juice for 45 cc petrol saw. From energy storage and efficiency standpoint the calculation would give similar result. A tank in smaller gas saw is about half a litre - or 17 MJ of energy. Taken into account the thermal efficiency of a modern 2-stroke engine (on average use about 20 %, full throttle close to 40 %), giving ballpark 3 MJ mechanical output. An 8 AH 40 V battery is roughly 1 MJ each, while the motor is about 90 % efficient. It should take 3 x 8 Ah batteries on this vs a tank of fuel on gas saw.

I have a 61cc makita that I was hoping to replace with a battery one, really going to need to see if the 40x2 comes out to serve around that size or if I’m cursed to always need to keep up with the small gas engine for the few times a year I need to break it out.

I not remember exactly what model was but my brother have 2 makitas top handle and 2 hands, I have the Stihl 220C and the 161T, last year we set up both brands kind like in a contest but we both prefer the Stihl, however in his case the Makita is preferable because he is a construction contractor and use the batteries in other Makita tools. Now you mention have used the Stihl 220C well try the MSA300 I have it also, the 220C kind feels like a toy they not comparable however it have a down side and it is the batteries even the best battery the AP500S is not up to this joy powerful machine, kind make me feel like a Mustang GT with gas tank in the reserve. I have written to Stihl in Germany in regard to that, they unswer me saying they appreciate my choice for Stihl and they continue working in improving their machines and batteries, so I hope a longer lasting battery come up, on mean time sure i continue with this AP500S.

Don't buy into the hype! Your 36v is actually 42 volts fully charged. The new "40v" is also 42v fully charged. 2 18v packs is superior to a single 40v pack hands down for managing temps, amp delivery and battery longevity.

Looks like a nice bit of Kit for Timber framing/Carpentry, Homeowners, Gardeners etc. Noise and ease of use(starting) definelty are big perks for the Electric/Cordless Saws. Runtime and lugging who knows how many Batteries about just doesnt cut it over the ol 2 Stroke goodness in the Forestry/logging department though. Shame Makita killed of the Dolmar 2 Strokes with 2022.

Ok, so you can remove the sprocket on the makita lxt double battery saw, Stihl also has battery saws, their electric sprocket will fit on the makita spindle, thus being able to run the Stihl chains. I run a little dime tip bar on my makita and it’s great for carving as it’s so stable, compared to a petrol saw jumping around. Hope that helps guys.

You should thest it with the 2.5Ah battery. You sad it's the most powerful one (or at least in 2.0, 2.5 and 4.0 group). I'm planning to buy a chainsaw, a driller and a lawn mower. If the chainsaw works well with the 2.5Ah battery, then it would be good for the lawn mower too (waiting for the 2x40V one). So I would buy 4x 2.5Ah batteries rather than 2x5Ah batteries. One pair could be left on charger, and there is a huge weight difference also! Could you test this 2.5Ah battery on the little 40V chainsaw too? That would be enough for me, and I could buy a bare unit + 2.5Ah batteries. Thanks!

This will take 20 inch bar no problem and so will the 18x2 , I have a 20 inch bar on my Milwaukee chainsaw and it handles it just fine with .325 chain on it , I’d even bet these and the new dewalt would take a 24 inch bar and run them with very little issue other than perhaps shortening the runtime on the battery a bit , I personally want to get either the makita 40v or dewalt to try this myself but with the price of the echo 56v kit being only 299 that’s probably the one I’m gonna go with as my next battery saw . But if can find a deal on this one that’s in the same ballpark I’ll give this one a shot

I am impressed! I will stick with gas mainly because of budget. I don't like the idea of heating up all those batteries either. With gas I am not worried about hurting the saw or battery from over heating. I am aware of all of the reasons people are switching, the main ones being not pulling the cord whilst in a tree, stale gas etc. The main reason people buy electric is because they do not know how to start a gas saw and they flood it repeatedly.

The 5 second power off is a deal killer for me. Bummer as I have 12 Makita 18V 5.0 batteries. I have a 6 year old Stihl cordless saw that needs to be replaced. I never had an issue with the STIHL’s battery going dead with a battery in it- 6 months later it still started right up with a trigger squeeze. I don’t understand Makita’s reason for putting an additional switch on some of their tools- chainsaws, routers etc…. The palm safety and trigger are plenty enough protection for false starts. Kid proofing? Take the friggin battery out…. Nice review though!!

I think it's pretty weak honestly. I expected much more from 40v

they should have gone 18v 12ah battery with 21700 cells like milwaukee has, instead of 40v. And instead of 40v they should have made straight 80v for industrial machines, then 2x80v would beat any gasoline powered machine or engine that modern industry mostly needs. Massive fail from makita, massive fail investment in R&D, which should result in flop. But, the die hard fans r gonna buy makita even if it is NEW 28.7v tool haha

Makita never made a space allowance on their 36v tools for bigger batteries. They could make a 7ah 18v battery but that’s as big as it will ever get.

@@kizzjd9578 waitley has 9ah repacement battery for makita that is not fake and that it works fine. I need those 9ah for working lights, for chainsaw, for angle grinder, for big wrench, anything that actually needs longer battery or more power. Hope makita wont find them, sue them and close them. I found a guy that makes custom batteries with 21700 cells and 12ah but his work and materials are too expensive for me. I only send him if i need service for already existing makita batteries. Im pushing him to make me an outboard boat engine with makita batteries but he is refusing. That would be amazing, or a paint sprayer

Fail from makita? Have you used any of the new 40v tools or just saying that, everything cutting is a massive step up from the 18v range
@toolscientist

What you describe would just have Makita copying Milwaukee's M18 and MX systems. Makita is able to do all the regular tools (impacts, drills, circs, recips, etc) and all the high power tools (concrete saws, demo hammers, etc) on the same platform. Time will tell if people prefer to have everything on XGT or have both M18 and MX FUEL (with its AU $900 batteries!)

@@brendonmcrae3156 Yes, i used 40v, some tools have significant step in power, some are fail. I couldnt praise more that 40v vacum cleaner, backpacks will be super amazing. Either way, with 80v wouldnt be fail, simple as that. You can decide to live in reality or to be a die hard fan, its ur money and ur choice
