Makita 40v Power Head (UX01) VS Makita 36v Power Head (DUX60)
Which one is better!?
Well, that's subjective - but I certainly prefer to use the 36v when maintaining the yard. Unless I need to chop some branches then you really can't beat the outright power of the 40 volt system.

EXCELLENT video of the comparison mate. Much thanks for that! And yes you are right, both the 36V and 40V can achieve the same max RPM's however the extra torque on the 40V helps it maintain that RPM better and thus prevents bog down in thicker/harder material. I am also VERY much appreciative you took the time to compare runtimes between brush vs. light grass. Well done mate. Well done. Really valuable info. It seems for my use case I really will have to stick to gas powered for now. I'm so impatient in waiting for a next generation of battery tech that can give us the longevity in runtime as well as battery life.. It's taking so LONG! lolol.

Cheers mate!! I did have a look at a 40v 8ah battery this morning and while it didn't feel much heavier in the hand, it is 400g heavier on paper. It'd be interesting to see what kind of run-time (and charge time) it would offer but I'll be using the 2.5ah 99% of the time and at $399AUD I'd rather replace my 36v Circular saw with the 40v unit!

@@gregandtarynsplace Yes mate I definitely understand that utility and value for money. And I suppose too if you already are in the Makita line and have more batteries, it's much easier to just have the spare pre-charged batteries on you ready to swap out as you go. Nice feedback and video format man, hope the channel does well!

Thanks for pointing out the issues with the window of operation time. Was considering the 40v head but with the current mode of operation i think i would just have an expensive javelin. It amazes me that someone signs off on these small little details that are such MAJOR flaws. I’ll wait for the next 40v power head to come out and see if the operation is improved.

I hope this helped make your decision. I kept the 40v but certainly miss the e-brake. And it is a bit annoying that even cycling the speed (Low, Medium, High) the tool turns off with that 2s safety timer.

Many places offer free shipping like tools and tradetools which are authorized dealers. I got a Milwaukee multitool from one place, and the battery and a charger from another and even when both orders were around 200 each, they included free shipping.

Thanks for this review. I have the 36v and have been thinking about upgrading to 40v mainly for pole saw use. Think buying lots of 2.5ah batteries to save weight and changing them more often is the way to go. The 2 second timeout might get annoying though

Yeah I hope seeing this comparison was useful to you then, the $$$ really starts to add up once you start getting in to the batteries. I received the cheap AliExpress 40v battery just last night so will be looking to get that comparison together soon.

Nice comparison. I have the 36v, but would like more power, especially on the pole saw. I'm thinking the longer brake time may be due to the more powerful motor, maybe that it has more mass rotating, and that a lot of that mass would also further from the centre if it's bigger.

Yeah that's a fair point. When you use it though it 'sounds' like it freespins and doesn't even try to brake, then just before is shuts off ( less than 2s ) it brakes and stops just as quickly as the 36v once it tries. The 36v line trimmer is the same, it seems to free spin and then brakes quickly once it is applied.

Excellent review…. I reel cut my zoysia matrella at 14mm…. I want to use rotary scissors EM407MP with a powerhead for trimming…. Can LXT handle that well or XGT is preferred? Thanks…

Oh I would love a pair of rotary scissors. The matrella always goes grey around the edges where I've used the line trimmer and I've tried using the hedge trimmer attachment as 'scissors' but it doesn't quite do the job. I would expect the LXT to do just fine as I can't imagine cutting the grass like that would require much torque and I suspect you'd only need to run them on Low/Medium anyway. But unfortunately I've never had the pleasure of using a pair!

good comparison. Although a little confusing on the run times, did you double the run time on the 36v? as 5ah batterys in series would be only 2.5ah. cheers

Hi no I didn't double the run time. That's how long it took from pulling the trigger to the battery going flat.

Nice review. I bought the 36V DUX60 a couple of weeks ago and it has the exact same 4 second / 2 second power off setup as your 40V one. Very annoying! Makita must have changed something in the software of the controller recently? I wonder why? Will probably just end up taping down the safety switch...

Oh no! That's pretty frustrating as a consumer how are you supposed to know if you'll get a 4s or a 60s safety switch. Thanks for letting us know 👍

Question. So the 40V has the slots for x 2, 2.5 amp batteries as well as x1 5amp battery. Do you know the weight of the 36V with extension arm and hedger. Thanks

They're very similar in weight at 8.61kg (19lb) for the 36v power head with extension pole and hedging attachment (the 40v was ~350gm heavier). The 40v power head will only hold 1x battery though, it doesn't have slots for 2x 2.5ah batteries. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gdFpas-IsLOWgas.html

How old was the 36v Combo/battery? as batteries deteriorate over time/usage. Could affect the results of the duration test. Excellent effort with the informative video. Keep up the good work 👍

Yes good point! They would be ~2yrs old. So not very old but not brand new, and I only do work around the house on the weekend, not using them day in day out. But yes this duration test could be a “worst case” for your 36v batteries.

Yeah I'll admit the 2.5ah battery is what makes the unit practical for me. I can get all my yard work done (twice) per charge and the unit is lighter than the 36v.

Out of interest, where would you typically purchase your power tools from? I've been wondering whether my conversion of what I paid in AUD to USD based on the exchange rate would actually be better if I instead looked up the unit price from USA retailers. We tend to pay a lot more in AUD than just the ~70c exchange rate difference.

@@gregandtarynsplace most of the time from Home Depot. Sometimes from Acme Tools or MaxTool. We got limited options for XGT. It's only this time that Makita has offered good deals with XGT. The rest of the world has had it for the last two years. Glad we're just starting to catch up!

Sorry I don't really understand the question? The line trimmer attachment works on the petrol, 18v, 36v and 40v power heads. My 36v or Makita Edger reviews might give more insight in to the trimmer attachment?

Yeah the only reason I paid for shipping was to get the free line trimming attachment with the pole saw and hedge trimming kit and they didn't offer free shipping as it was 'on clearance'. I was basically watching the stock levels while waiting for a 'spend $1000 and get a $200 gift card offer' to appear (it didn't by the time stock got to

Ah I see, normally I asked Total Tools staff to order them in and it won’t take long though especially when on sales. Can receive bonus buck plus insider money too. Spent only $160 for XGT power head kits with 5ah.
