Great video review! I was contemplating the 40v, but it only come with one battery. The 36v had 4 which ups my battery count to 24 - 5ah. One note about the 36v; don't let the batteries get hot. They won't recharge until they cool down. At two bars of power I swap out.

this is funny i watch your cnc videos never thought you would do a chain saw review but i'm glad you did 🤣. i have the xcu06 and the xcu09 saws and i was wondering how the new 40v model compared to the xcu08/9 and if i should swap it out. the only thing holding me back is getting into the 40v battery system, at the moment i have over 20 18v batteries so i can go all day pretty much and never have to stop, i would have to buy quite a few 40v batteries to do that and they are pretty expensive compared to the 18v system.

Nice! Learned a bit. 98 db is about 20 minutes of use before you are doing damage to your ears. Normal chainsaw is under 10 minutes. I have a Huskvarna :) Keep looking at the Makita cordless ones. Mark

Whatever you say bud, been running chainsaws over a decade, I have perfect hearing. Rarely did I ever wear earpro.

Great video chaps. I have a couple of questions. I want to cut a couple of pine trees down in my back garden. The first one is about 25-30ft, the other a lot taller. I have other Makita tools and already have 4 18v 5ah batteries. I'd therefore only need a bare body 36v chainsaw but would have to also buy a battery for the 40v (batteries on this side of the pond are not cheap, not sure about in the US). If you add that to the equation, would you pick the 36v over the 40v, or is the 40v really a lot better? I won't be using it often, but getting them cut down for me will cost a LOT more than the price of a chainsaw and associated bits. As an example, we had one tree removed a year or so back, plus a hedge cut down a bot and that was £500.

Hello. If you only are going to cut down a couple of full grown trees a year and you already have makita 18v 5Ah batteries, I would go for the 36 volt chainsaw. Not the 40 volt. I wish you good luck.

I went with the dual battery saw for price reasons. Saved over 200$ vs the 40v and aftermarket 18s are cheap. The extra weight... I need the exercise anyway.

40V is much stronger. On a small stick it doesnt matter. But 40V will do much tougher work and longer than 18V.

I bought an 80cc saw for the same reason, keeps my arms working and staying strong, although at 20 lbs dressed it’s a little bit harder to one hand 😂

How long does the 18v last? Will it be ideal for palm tree trimming?

We don’t have palms but it lasts pretty decent pruning smaller limb’s. You can put an aftermarket bar and sprocket and run 1/4 inch chain and it will do a lot better.

One of the best reviews that I have seen 👏. I think that I'm going to start with the 18 v because I've got the batteries. Really tempted by the 40v though 🤔!!

The 40v batteries are insanely expensive plus they are popular amongst the euro trash. I’ll stick to the 36v platform thank you.

I have the 18 and soon to get the 40. They are different categories of saw in my opinion. I have a 10” bar on the 18 and plan on having 14” bar on the 40. The 18 is a true one handed saw, super handy for camping and can clear a trail if something not too massive falls down. I plan to have the 40 to compliment the 18 not replace it, as the 18 being so light is a joy to use. I’ve actually removed the brake and side handle on the 18 since I rarely use it with 2 hands, to make it easier to pack.

@Sfhakrn 40v is miles better then 18 or 36v. 36v is rubbish

Nothing lends credibility to a saw review like standing in front of 5 cords of wood and wearing a beaver on your head. ;) Thanks, fellas.

No No No no, i dont suggest any chainsaw electric, just they are not safe, one arborist real one, bought that small one to try, so he placed it on truck it was after job and than he touched chainsaw and it started just like that. Which is bad. Now guys think how dangerous it is the second you check with hand the chain which you do often to check if its not loose or too tight or after cleaning, you must always to remove battery! Button wont work it can either malfunction or you may not turned off and hello no more hand, and what can i tell electronics of today has so much juice it can start spin without battery. Yes my tv started without any energy, or computers you take plug out everything is off, than push button start and it makes coolers spin, so chainsaw will always be dangerous the electric one, dont forget we work in rain.
