Makita XGT Hammer Drill Review | Is It Better Than XPH07?

Makita released two flagship hammer drills. The XPH14 supplants their excellent XPH07 which we’ve used for several years and the GPH01 launches with the highly-anticipated XGT 40V Max line. We tested them side-by-side to see how they compare. We’ll be running tests to assess the tool’s overall speed drilling into 2x4 studs and concrete, and running each of them on the PTR Drill Test Track. Deciding when’s the right time to upgrade your cordless tools can be a tough decision, this video is meant to help those of you on the Makita platform decide whether the jump to XGT is worth it, starting with the hammer drills.

Tip for anyone looking at the 40v platform. Buy your first tools as a large 4 tool combo kit; it's practically a tool deal with how much money you save and it makes this system more of a viable option compared to a traditional 20v platform.

I always appreciate a concrete test. It something that many tool channels don't include in a review. I drill alot of 3 1/16 holes for tapcons and a concrete test helps me determine my choice on what to purchase Thanks again

If you are a pro the new XGT 40V line is definitely something to get into. If you’re a DIY guy and already invested in the 18V Makita line, the XPH14 provides 95%+ of what the GPH01 can do. The only thing is that the XPH14 is missing the electronic clutch and the anti-kickback features of the GPH01. I’m personally invested in the 18V line of Makita tools, and just picked up the XPH14, it’s an awesome Hammer Drill...my plan is to wait for a great sale on XGT and slowly get into that line so I have more options in the future for my choice of tools. I’d recommend to stay away from XGT right now if your not a pro in great need of those tools, as they’re still a bit hard to find/get and the pricing on them is at its highest...if you’re a DIY/Prosumer, wait till the market settles in and there are sales/promos on the XGT lineup, then buy into a tool set/kit with at least 2 - 4Ah batteries to start.

I agree with you I'd just like to point out with experience in industrial commercial and residential new, remodels, and outages and of course i am not paying another man to do shit around my house so plenty of diy as it's so called I prefer FITFO(figure it f#$^l out) that I've came across maybe ten pros a lot that might have a real shot at the big times and multitudes of fucking amateurs. Jokes aside I have a hard time imagining a situation where a diy guy will realistically need something the lxt cant offer on the other hand XGT just gave the boss man the opportunity to yell hurry up a couple more times a day

Awesome Kenny! And I’m surprised ( and Happy) you didn’t once mention that new ‘F’ line of tools! 🤔🙄🙄😀😁😁😂. Seriously, thoroughly enjoyed this! Until my ole’ XPH07 gives up the ghost, I will resist the temptation of upgrading, maybe... 😁👍👍👍✌🏻🇺🇸

I've been on my Orange 18V set for over a decade, so it wouldn't be a switch to get into the 40V when they finally go. And seeing as how high quality Makita are, I'm very tempted to slowly replace my Orange 18V with Teal 40V.

I own and use the XPH07, and have run in structural lags, in low speed, with the ‘5 mile long’ handle of course, and it’s a beast, so I can confidently tell you the XPH14 would more than meet your needs, Edgardo! Take care!

I use two Makita drills: the XPH07 and a smaller, lighter, less powerful XFD06. The '06 has half the torque of the '07, not as nice of a chuck, but I tend to reach for it more often due to its weight. With this in mind, I'd love to buy a Makita drill with the power and build quality of the '07, or close to it, in a significantly lighter tool. This being said, the 40V line look outright fierce!

I also have a Makita and there is a problem in use. I am not sure whether it is a fault or a normal phenomenon. The torque ring is adjusted to the starting mode. For example, I set the torque of gear 1 of the wave box to the number 41 and gear 2 to the number 21. When the first gear is adjusted to the second gear, sometimes the number will not change from 41 to 21, and it will change to 21 after pressing the switch once or twice. But sometimes it is normal, and when the wave box is turned fast and slow, it will also show the corresponding number.

Makes me realize how forward thinking Dewalt was with their Flexvolt battery system ie backwards compatibility to 18/20 volt XR tools ,I'm staying with yellow.

I am upgrading my Makita tools finally. I have the older 18V stuff, it's almost 20 years old and still works great. The problem is you can't get the older style 18V batteries. So it's an easy decision to just step up to the 40V line. By the way would love to see you do a review on the 40V impact wrench.

@@InNerdimensional the batteries were shaped differently, instead of the rectangular brick shape of the current 18v and 40v they were a baseplate with a prong that went up inside the handle.

When you use these drills to drive in screws, can you set the drill to HAMMER mode in order to use it like an impact driver (if you use impact bits) Thanks.

for DIY you need one of them and it does not matter which one because there is no difference in the price and performance that will impact your work and for a company the extra power and speed is important and the small and compact is important also so they should plan to buy both 18V and 40V like Milwaukee you need 18V system as much as 12v system. although I do not see any major different to upgrade your tools like upgrading your mobile. :)

I have had the lxt range since i started in the trade in 2005. I also have flexvolt, multivolt and high output milwaukee batteries. When tools like my 36v hikoki hammer drill or my 54v dewalt circular saw die and would have no hesitation replacing those with smoother makita 40v tools. I would likely drop one of the other brands which would most likely be hikoki as i have the most lxt and flexvolt tools and i would not drop my m12 range so that leaves one company on the chopping block.

Makita should have made the batteries backwards compatible as Metabo HPT did-I can't tell you how many times the 36V batteries have been swapped back and forth from our 18V nail guns and triple hammers and back to the 36V tools+the AC adapter has really increased our productivity with the Table saw, mitre saw, grinder, rotary hammer and a few others due to unlimited run time-I still luv my Makita tools but I will only consider Makita 40V if they offer something Milwaukee and Metabo HPT and 18V Makita don't as it's not practical at this point

Batteries won't fit in certain situations, sliding onto a drill would be fine, but some stuff has the battery recessed, then its a game of which battery fits what.

Completely agree, at least make the 40v 2.5ah backwards compatible then at least you have the option to run one charge/system. If they offered a free upgrade from x2 18v tools to the 40v equivalent then they would have no issues fading out the 18v system especially if they offered a 40v/12v charger. Missed a trick there in mybook

Totally agree. I love Makita in general but Metabo HPT absolutely nailed the right approach and I'm baffled that Makita didn't follow suit.

I just exchanged my hammer drill for a replacement because it was making a loud clanking/grinding noise when you let off the trigger. This is not the normal brake clutch sound you would expect, this is extremely loud and also vibrates the whole tool. What I find odd is that the replacement drill is doing the same exact thing - is this just normal behavior for this model?

I love my Makita, and the 40v does clearly give us a shit ton more power. But in what I do I don't have that power need but it is nice that if the need arose Makita still has my back. I won't make the jump to 40v but some day I know I'll have to upgrade.

By not making the new 40V battery backwards compatible Makita didn't have our back-they are trying to get us to buy new 40V tools that in many cases only moderately improve performance-irrtitated by their decision which we have known for a few yrs when they released the 49V overseas and a big reason I have continued to invest more into Metabo HPT more over the last few yrs

@@baseballdude8491 there is a clear performance difference between 18v and 40v. For the people who have a power demand, yes, they will stay with Makita. And while other manufacturers will always have a tool or two that is superior to your brand, we can't have four different cordless platforms are a job site or the garage.

@@BamaShinesDistillery You obviously don't own or have even tried the 36V line-I have plenty of the top end Makita 18V and the Metabo HPT 36V and 18V tools and also have owned their best in industry nailers for over 30yrs so please spare me the "I know better than you garbage" If you didn't know this then you haven't been in the trades long--Go ahead and ignore good tools and bleed only blue--you'll just miss out on some tools that are better and more flexible than some of the Makita line-,you probably think Milwaukee sucks too

I just got the Xgt Hammer drill. It’s super fast when it works but i notice that it seems to think it’s binding up on me sometimes and turns off. It’s super annoying i can’t seem to get it right. Any tips or has this happened to you?

@@Protoolreviews no chance of that. Definitely in the right mode. but yes try to recreate it! Never happens to me in the first runs. always once it’s warmed up. It happened me on a 1” paddle bit the other day. After doing about 20 3/4” holes the battery was still full but it wasn’t allowing me to use the 1” which i have used before it’s just gotta be fresh i guess? I don’t know. Battery was still full. Things a beast just some inconsistencies i notice.

That sounds like a "feature" just asking for a problem. The most basic function of our power tools is the run and do the thing we want them to. Adding programming that "solves" a problem by shutting off the tool is just begging to create a new problem of the tool shutting itself off when the user does not want it to.

Makita factory claims that the new 18v flagship has 680watt output power while 40v middle class hammer drill model number HP002G has 750watt maximum power. I am guessing HP001G has nearly twice power compare to 18v flagship. I own these drills for collection not for job they're monster.

Who is "we" I know plenty of contractors that run multiple cordless and corded tool lines cuz they like having the best tool for the job-on the jobsite I try keeping a bit more streamlined at the jobsite- but in the shop I choose the color that does the best for the job-I like and own many Makita tools but my main point is they really missed an opportunity to make the 40V batteries compatible with the good tools Makita already offers in the expansive 18V line-now.your gonna have to have more chargers and more batteries just like u were investing in a new tool line-they only share the color and name not the charging system-it sucks

Really missed an opportunity? Says who? Says you? Ya right now today it would be great I cant say for certain if it's TRUE or not but part of the XGT sales pitch is beefed up batter contacts to withstand higher loads or something like that basically to carry the higher voltage they supposedly changed up the batteries . Ya makita probably could have put out comparable tools that were backwards compatible but I think that the 20v/18v base is fast approaching diminishing returns with efficiency and performance whereas upping voltage will allow it to go further so rather than pandering they took a step forward. Regardless of anything else it is way too early in the XGT line to say they made missed an opportunity.
