'Produce music that people want to hear, not for yourself' that's why we are stuck listening to shitty big room, you should make music that you enjoy because that's a true expression of you as an artist.

MacKenzie Johnson Yeah sure you probably enjoy making this sort of music but unfortunately people love to make what ever is popular and isn't what they like by their own taste. Not trying to hate on you at all it just seems like a bad message to not make music for yourself, you should only make what you enjoy and not what others want to hear

***** Why don't you go produce something that's different instead of complaining. People aren't going to stop what they're doing because of what you think. If you aren't going to do something, stop complaining. He was a DJ first, of course his mindset will probably more crowd oriented.

Jay Zhao Haha, so do you want to continue hearing the same recycled sounds from all the big artists? All i'm saying is try and innovate and don't stick the same fucking big synths big kick & plucks bullshit that 99% of artists make now. Encore was a nice change from Makj but still 'producing for others' just doesn't sound right. You should always stay 100% truthful to your own taste. Some peoples 'taste' is just what ever is popular at the moment.

Hold on, need to clear something here: at 2:09 MAKJ says "...Henry Fong who is the other collaborator on this song, he sent me a melody and it was very basic, he sent it over SoundCloud about 7 months ago.... blablabla..." 3:20 somewhere MAKJ says "after that we came up with the top line" *melody startst to play* (NOTE THIS PART) Looking at it, Encore was released in December 2013. As I went through my sample library I found a piece of music called "EDM Lead Line vol 1 (3) MIX.wav" from the sample pack "Shockwave EDM Lead Line Vol 1". Reference: sounds.beatport.com/pack/edm-lead-line-vol-1/5897 The sample pack was released at around May 2013, roughly 7 months before Encore was released The melody that MAKJ claims that he "came up with" sounds exactly the same as the melody in the sample pack. At around 20:13 he says "it's Henry Fong sound, and MAKJ sound". WRONG! It's Henry Fong sound, MAKJ sound, and a shockwave sample. MAKJ should not claim that he "came up with the melody", because he did NOT! Props for the track in general though, at least they made a whole track. After all, Shockwave made the sample pack for anyone to use, but artists like this that lie to their fans that love them for being "original", thats just wrong. It's alright as long as artist don't claim that they come up with something that they haven't come up with.

@bloodaid
@bloodaid 9 жыл бұрын
Jimmy Jacksonian who are you referring to? I guess you haven't produced before... Just because you're using samples doesn't mean you're not producing. What do you expect producers to do? Samples are there for anyone to use, just like chip manufacturers create chips for other companies to produce a final product. People at disney use samples as well, they don't play each instrument on their own and actually companies such as disney invest huge resources on their producers which use digital equipment to simplify their work, so your statement doesnt hold water.
@bloodaid
@bloodaid 9 жыл бұрын
Jimmy Jacksonian I agree on some parts and disagree on some parts. I'd rather use the analogy of an artist using photos that he paints on to the canvas and call it art. It can be art, but is it the type of art YOU like? However if the artist claims that he/she painted the photos when he/she clearly hasn't painted the photos, that's a whole different story, and that's what's bugging me out.

+Axel Lindgren agree, you should produce for a crowd at first, but tbh so many people die off because they continue to only produce for a crowd. Think about how sick you would get playing the same damn songs over and over again at clubs, festivals and so on. At least if you enjoy the music its not hard when it begins to be overplayed

I disagree with his EQ boosting statement. Turning it up means your turning up everything. with boosting specific ranges (say upper mids) you can get precieved loudness. The whole big room lead sound is very mid rich (extreme highs cut, extreme lows cut).
@TomerValve
@TomerValve 10 жыл бұрын
To focus on the bass with just 2way nearfields I use an eq which alows you to solo specific bands (so you can just listen to everything below say 250) to without all the other stuff in the track taking your attention.
@TomerValve
@TomerValve 10 жыл бұрын
do the test - turning everything also down and rising the fader doesnt sound the same when just doing a boost. You also get phase changes when you subtract not just boost. its also important to use the right EQ for the job. not all eqs were created equal. If sounds are fighting it usually should be solved in the production stage not mixing. Its much easier to turn an amazing rough mix golden (where you just rise the faders and it already sounds good by itself) then a pile of shit with tons of problems to gold.

Really enjoyed this session. I like the advice of not putting too many things into one track. Over the years, I've been guilty of cluttering a track with every idea that came up ... then I was left with a mud puddle of sound. No real clarity or definition to the music because of just overloading it. Thanks!

There's one weird thing about the track of MAKJ featuring Hardwell. something like 2 months before it went live, i had already heard on youtube and it was under MAKJ's name only. Also, the frequencie/key chart, the way he uses it is pretty neat. I've seen producers a couple times that didn't even know notes actually had particular frequencies.

I produce Trance, Electro, House (EDM) even some bigroom tracks. i may not be well known as a producer but i do agree with allot he is saying. he is right about many things. people should look past what he makes and listen to what he is saying because what he is saying can apply to many genres of music :) The most important tools is your eq, compression and reverb units when it comes to overall mixing and an acoustic treated room to do it in. everything else is just instruments, arrangement, automation and effects, but its the way its used is what separates any producer from another.

Thanx a million MAKJ!! Thanx for taking the time to show us your work & your methods this was really cool to watch! You seem like an even nicer dude too :) I was stoked to see you picked that track too it's one of my favs! I've been thinking of getting into producing for a while now & I've recently started doing some research so every bit helps. The hardest part is what program to choose though, there's so many programs available. Is one better than the other for beginners? I was thinking Ableton originally but then I started thinking FL Studio & now watching Logic Pro I dunno what to do. Is there a particular program best for beginners? I also wonder about mountains of plugins that you need to buy & how much that would all cost.

looking at pros producers that uses logic, I noticed that the 80% of them are still using logic pro 9 instead of X... I don't got why. Maybe to use 32 bit 3rd party plug-ins, but nowadays there are programms to convert them to 64. So why?

+matthewinfamous I had that thought so I tried it and here's what happened. It worked slower than 9 for me and I've heard other people say the same, there's not much a difference between the two, you have to pay the full amount for 10 even is you have 9 and go through the process of downloading it and re downloading all 3rd party plug ins, you can't transfer projects from 9 to 10, you may have to uninstall logic 9 and lose of the projects depending on if you have storage room on your computer or not and 10 is darker (literally) and that shouldn't matter but for some reason it turns me off.. I'm back on 9.

+matthewinfamous When you have a working tool you don't upgrade like crazy just because there's something new out there. That said, I definitely recommend X over 9, and wouldn't recommend going back, it feels to stiff for modern standards. If you've always worked with it, awesome, if not then there's no reason to go downgrade. Well, that's my opinion anyways :p
