This guys position with every horse is really bad... He flops all over their back and seesaws their mouth over the jump... no wonder their stopping

The rider is just relying on speed to get over the jump, no techniques. The height isn't a problem, the riding is.

I love how everyone is saying "if it was too high the horses wouldn't jump it." if you watched the damn video you'd see that each horse REFUSED the jump at least once, then were pressured into doing it by the idiots riding them. Professionals know how to get over a damn jump safely and beautifully. This crap is neither.

Here is my opinion. The jump height is not the worst problem in this mess but the way they set it up is unsafe. The riders position is not doing what it's supposed to and not helping the horse over. They are yanking on their mouths and falling back on the landing putting a mass amount of pressure and shock on the horse. This is not show jumping this is just cruel.

the fact that the poles are nailed into the standard is extremely dangerous. It would have fallen if they weren't nailed in. The horses legs got completely stuck on the front side of the jump..

i dont think the riders are experienced enough to be jumping this height. the horses need more experienced riders

I don't like how these people ride. They kind of fall back into the saddle, instead of moving with the horse. Also, they pull on the horses' mouths when they have jumped the fence. And i also think that they shouldn't be doing this if they are only bothering the horse. I mean, Grand Prix jumpers know how to let the horse jump without bothering it. These people really need to work on that, before they can jump this high. Ofcourse, there were some better jumps. But mostly, they were not good and bad for the horse.

I hated the way that grey was ridden. Kudos to him for being able to jump that high but really? Falling into the saddle and flapping arms like we're doing the birdy dance? In what world is that meant to encourage a horse. More leg and less birdy. Couldn't it have been attacked with a little more poise and grace? To anyone saying that's too high: see that grey that refused the jump? He didn't want to do it. No matter how much that rider kicked or flapped his arms, you could see the horse wasn't balanced going into the jump and didn't look all that keen so almost said 'sorry dad, not about to happen.' You can't force a horse to do anything. They're a heck of a lot bigger than us and no amount of whipping, spurring etc is going to make a horse do anything it doesn't want to do - there are exceptions to this and we all know it but this is for the majority. In my opinion, from the angle of the camera, most of the horses got far too deep into the jump to be able to execute the jump as best they could. Still, well done.

This isn't riding, this is clinging on to a terrified animal galloping at an obstacle that it is forced to jump over.

As far as I know the puissance bricks are a lot softer than this and the sand would be raked and done right for the horses, this however is border lining cruelty, the poles are nailed in and the horses dont have a good landing spot, its too soft for them

There is some concern at poles rather than foam blocks being used, tack fitting, stirrup length, lack of a forward seat and soft hands but as far as I can see these horses trust their riders and are giving it their all. Decent landing recovery apart from that fall. I just came back from watching the puissance at the London International Horse show and I think the winner (with tons of sponsorship, training and an expensively bred horse under him) only cleared 7ft 2 and a half inches. Makes you wonder what more common or working class horse folk could become given the opportunity.

The riding here is atrocious and aggressive. These people should be going back to basics before they're attempting such large jumps.

I'm all for people jumping this high because some horses simply love to do it, but I don't agree with doing it when you're yanking on the horse's mouth, landing hard on its back, and just plain making basic equitation mistakes. I'm not saying I'm incredible at riding, but I think any rider could recognize that this isn't the way that you should be jumping a horse regardless of how high.

This makes me sad. These horses were obviously pushed too far. The riders shouldn't just throw anything at these horses and expect them to jump it. It is very unsafe, you see the white fence things around the jump, if a horse get's spooked after it forfeits a jump, it could easily run into the ride etc. Plus they had music playing, it can be a distraction and any weird or loud noise can easily spook a horse, if they are going to have music, at least put those ear muff things the horses. This isn't riding, they're all slopping and the poor horses.. don't get me wrong, they're great riders to be jumping at this height, but you gotta care for the horse.

Anyone hating or saying these people are bad riders. I have had lessons from one of the men riding Ron Easy. He has been to the Olympics for show jumping representing Australia. These people want the best for all the horses and they are amazing people who I have had the pleasure of riding with

Height isn't the problem the problem here is the people only wanting to go over that jump... even if the horses didn't want too, and a horse does everything for his/her owner. l see them shaking their hands hard which yanks the reins.. l wouldn't be surprised if anyone got bucked or reared off if a horse doesn't want too.. they won't.. in my opinion.. this isn't fun.. these people should have a way better relationship with their horse... l'm a horse rider myself for 17 years.. and l can tell the difference...

I like how loads of people are insulting the riders. However everyone rides differently, and i'm sure everyone who comments saying "he's too far back in the saddle" "he should stick with some basic equitation" are far from perfect riders and have bad habits themselves, he's not riding dangerously and if he was causing the horse any pain i'm pretty sure it wouldn't be jumping that. I see no issues with this video, as there were many people around to make sure it all went smoothly. It was a soft landing for the horses, and the riders weren't abusive to the horses like i see many 'barn brats' here on youtube smacking their horses for not jumping. These horses are likely to be well bred competition horses... I've worked with horses like that and trust me, they're hard to handle and ride. So you can't moan if a rider is looking sloppy, as for all you know, he's putting all his energy in keeping the horse going and not allowing them to rush into a fence. You don't know what the horse the person is riding is like, so therefore you cannot judge someone's riding based on one video on one horse, as each horse is different to ride, everyone has different riding styles and has to sometimes adapt the riding style depending on the horse you're riding or what you're doing with said horse. I'm pretty sure the man who won this is a damn site better rider than 2/3 of the people commenting on this video, if not more, seeing as he was able to stay on over a 7ft+ jump. I would of been flung out of the saddle by now. So i take my hat off to him and his horse.

I've met this amazing man, and he would never cause his horses any discomfort. He is a stunning instructor. The way the jump is set up is a little dangerous, but what can you do? Its a show full of unhorsey people. I remind you all grand prix jumpers jump this and more, and most of you are fine with it. Plus, I'm also certain Ron wouldn't be too bloody worried about his equitation jumping that high.

I don't like to leave negative comments on videos but these horses are being steered at jump, having their tongues stuffed down their throats by their bits and hen expected to throw themselves at a jump with no impulsive or even thought for striding!! They are practically falling over the fences!! Learn how to ride!!!!

So many things are wrong with this. I will make a list, because I don’t want to type it all out in a paragraph. • There was no technique to the jumping, all the riders rode the horse into the jump with as much speed as possible, which helps, but the horses weren’t in a collected gallop, it was in an uncollected gallop which if they jumped a weird way it would fall into the jump and injure itself very badly. • The riders had no proper training on how to stay up in the saddle, because they all were falling backwards into the saddle as they were going over the jump, which pulled the horses mouth. A very experienced rider is able to release but still have contact with the horses mouth, but these guys just fell backwards and pulled the mouth, which can make a horse afraid to be pulled on by anyone. • The poles were nailed into the jump, so if a horse fell into it, the poles could have broken and ripped up the horse. If the horse had gotten its hoof caught in the poles from the front, the horse could have flipped over and it is a potential risk for the rider, regardless if the jump is 2.3, or 7.7. You really would want to have flat cups, so that way if the horse knocks them then they would fall with the horse instead of it possibly flipping over. At this height, it’s just not safe. • The way some of them rode the horses was aweful, I saw some sawing at the mouth constantly, and even driving all the time. If the rider can’t ride the horse properly without hurting the horse to make it behave, then don’t put that rider on the horse.

BRILLIANT. Thank You for uploading to KZfaq. I got my interest back in show jumping in Ireland. I used to have a very good show jumping horse VDL Calvaro Star (ISH). I sold age 5 to make my name in show jumping as a "spotter" of talent. ( bought age 2, sold age 5 ).

Tbh, the height is fine (it looks smaller than a puissance jump) but the techniques of the riders is a bit messy and the material of the jump doesn't make it inviting either. its just the fact that the jump poles are tied on too, which when hit by the horse's leg wont give way.

These horses are so talented! I think chase me charlie's are good, and fun for both horse and rider, but there needs to be a limit. Why does a horse need to jump 7ft7? It's just going to make their lives harder as they get older, and although it may seem fun now, it won't be worth it in the long run ...

Fantastic stuff. Personally I love high jump riding because it makes me proud to own a TB. The high jump world record of course being held by a TB. But frankly I don't think anyone has the right to crit any of these riders on their position or riding skill unless they can prove they can jump that kind of height because I know I can't.

I keep seeing comments sayings its too high or its bad for the horse, its only for one day its not like they do it every day, they have padding after the jump to prevent injuries, horses can jump unbelievably high, and yes they are pulling on the reins way to much and their jumping position is not what it should be doing, i agree with that part. Also the poles are getting nailed in the jump which is actually really bad because the horses leg might get stuck and the pole won’t fall down so the horse will most likely fall over.

I do not agree with the riders techniques/approach but if the horse didn't want to jump it, they wouldn't.

Here's my two cents From my observations I noticed most people who commented that "this is abuse" and " learn how to ride" etc are people who have most likely never even ridden a horse let alone been to the Olympics In my opinion I can comprehend why people interpret this video In a negative light however I'm sorry to inform you that you are wrong. First off the rider is in no way not displaying horsemanship which is the bond between the horse and rider, by working together in unison to achieve a goal whether it be breaking a record or winning a competition. Secondly in order to clear a jump of this caliber a rider my use impulsion not speed however speed is still necessary in successfully clearing the jump. In addition the riders approach was fine with that being said every horse is different and people handle them accordingly, having ur hands slightly raised an body width apart gives the horse freedom in their movement. Educate yourself first 💁🏽

Im cracking myself up reading these comments... from "learn how to ride, to these horses are scared and dont like jumping etc"... these riders and horses are professional showjumpers- theres an Olympian showjumper in there for gods sake lol... people are always sooo quick to judge and make ridiculous comments.... always experts from their armchairs! ;)

I know people may have different opinions but the poles are nailed into the jump which is very dangerous and a horse could do a rotational fall if the nails won't come out.

My trainer says: When jumping, heels down, lean forward while coming up to the jump, kick, click, and follow your horse body, sit straight until the jump when the horse jumps, YOU follow it’s body. These riders flopped in the position of the saddle, and would of fallen off if it hadn’t of been for SAINT horses.

Is this a horse show? It looks strange to me. Like a clinic in someone's backyard acre of horse property. I can't tell if it's the same person riding each horse, I think it is right? It's this one guy trying to break the record? I've only ever seen this in big show rings grand prix style, dressed the part with a shined black boots and a coat and a stock tie which is required for high level competitions in dressage and show jumping. I may be mistaken. However I have never seen this done outdoors or in this era with heavy poles amd.no protection for the horses' front legs. No boots and no bell boots. Those poles look like the kind we used to jump when zi was a kid and they are extremely heavy and about twice the circumference of a horse's cannon bone. I feel it's really putting these horses at risk for injury should they nail those heavy poles with their cannon bone or along the white line of the hoof which can split it right down to the coffin bone. Either injury would be catastrophic. Not to mention how hard this is on their musculoskeletal system which is extcomples with a rider on their back. One wrong landing from 7 and a half feet and you could have a dead horse. I have little room to talk since I was an eventer and combined training can be very dangerous since the jumps don't move and the horses are galloping to make time. But the courses I was jumping were no taller than 3'7" or 3'9" (in that range). And in stadium jumping I never jumped courses higher than 3'11" as an Intermediate eventer. I do notice the softer landing which is great as long as they land perfectly and if they're k coming rails than it's easy to assume their legs are out of balance to land. I've babbled enough. I'm not right or wrong and nobody on here knows best. I think we need to take into account the safety and comfort level of the horses. Are they enjoying it. Some of these horses really seemed to be. I see trucks and trailers right by the jump and people are just wandering around. There's no arena and just this single jump and everybody is dressed down. This just looks like a regular old Saturday afternoon at Ron's place. Or people trailers in to see how high he could get their horse to jump like a friendly competition amongst clients of his that are being trained by him. It's weird. Even if this was in the mid and late 80s this looks strange.

Okay for all of the people bashing each other let me sum this up for you. I think the idea of jumping this high is not safe for the horse. For those who think the riders are bad I'm sure it could go both ways depending on which one you are talking about.

I don’t think these riders have ever been in any other competitions they just take it as a challenge with friends and find a horse that CAN jump high and look at it like it will work

Sorry, but I needed to add a comment. Everyone seems to believe that this is such horrible riding, and the horses do not want to jump. Yes, this is very dangerous and my respect goes out to those participating. Yes, the horses refused at times. This doesn't mean that they cannot jump it. The grey seemed to have to get a feeling for the jump, but once he did this, he went amazingly. They riders are competitive riders and trainers, who understand the risks and level of jumping they are doing. Their riding is on point for this sort of jumping. The horse must know that the rider had faith in them, and the rider themselves must RIDE theorise, in order to do this. The man who came off after the jump, in my opinion, it was a split second decision to free the horse of imbalance, if he had chosen to stay on, he could have clung to the horse for awhile. They are riding the horse forward into the jump, not leaning for until the right time, in case of a refusal, and to drive the horse forward.

This is pushing the horses to a standard the not ready for. The way they nail the poles to the wing is dangerous, when the horse knocks the pole, what happens if the pole doesn’t fall and the horse trips? And after the jump, they shouldn’t look back to see if they knocked the pole in mid-air. These people are not professionals as you can see. And also the rider on the grey flaps his arms up and down like a seesaw.

This is the perfect example of just because you can doesn’t mean you should. These riders have HORIBBLE posture and fall back into the saddle over the jump. Grand pric riders could do this and do ok. These horses are pressured into doing something awful. I hate the way these horses are treated. 😭😭

This is some sick carnival attraction!!!! I can't believe people do this. I am not a skilled jumper myself but I am doing research and hopefully getting my horse healed up soon. I know she was trained in dressage, she looks like a jumper and is FAST so she was probably used for eventing. If I find out she was used for something like this ( she wasn't but I'm just saying) I would go crazy on someone. Sorry for rambling

I feel like pretty much no one in this comment section has seen / watched / done the Puissance before. In that they jump higher than this. And for those of you saying that the rails are 'nailed' to the wood, you're wrong. The grey knocked like three poles down. The only thing nailed is the cups, that hold the poles. I definitely don't agree with this guys so called 'style' he's flopping around like a dead fish. He also shouldn't be whipping the horse like that. He has very bad riding. But this is a sport. Just like cross country, show jumping, barrels, roping ect. I only like the Puissance that have the soft 'bricks' as they are better and more kind for the horse. Thank you

If one of these horse's front legs were to catch on the poles like their back ones did so many times... they would flip and land on top of their rider. Just go watch some fall videos and you'll see how dangerous this actually is, especially at this height. Their neck could've easily be snapped. Plus the riders have horrible position and should really not be jumping this high. For example, the guy who fell off at 2:10 let his lower leg slide back while coming off the jump which caused his center of gravity to be too far forward. This would have been fixed if he had kept his weight in his heels and stayed in 2 point longer. Most of these riders need to go back and learn the basics. I'm not saying I'm a great rider, but at least I would make sure I mastered my position and balance before increasing height of the jumps.

The thing is... he didn’t seem to take jumping position correctly... that’s why he bounced so high which leads to pulling on the reins.

There's so many things wrong with this. The riders aren't using any riding skills, they are all yanking, pulling, and relying on the bit to keep them on. Also when they are gaining speed, they slam onto the saddle, they don't move with the horse, and it looks incredibly painful. Also, I saw a comment somewhere down below saying they don't believe a horse should jump more then it's height, and I believe that too. If the jump is bigger there is no reason to jump it, anything could happen at that point because now they are at better risk of landing wrong or anything within the longer period of time they are in the air. Also the fact that they NAILED the poles on is so irritating, how do people think this is okay? A horse can potentially break a leg from this or get stuck and *seriously* injured. Extremely disappointing.

Anyway I wouldn't have jumped nearly as high after a refusal, clearly the horses were unsure and jumping it higher afterwards probably ruined their confidence

Jesus, for all the complainers the horses r FINE. It's not like their being traumatized or abused. The jump is a little high but that's when the horses have to trust there riders for guiding them over the jump!

To be honest this isn't pretty at all nor is it safe. You can jump that high but need to have a proper jumping position that is safe, but functional for you. But these positions are incorrect ( in my opinion not to offend anyone ) and VERY unsafe no matter how fun it looks. So here's a lesson for ya don't go over what you are capable of just because it is fun, for your safety and the horse's safety.
