There is a history of hostility between various Indian potentates and the kings of the Maldives going back to antiquity. In the late 10th century AD, the Cholas, under Rajendra Chola I invaded and occupied the Maldives, holding the islands for several years. The Solar Dynasty in Malè was vanquished. When Chola ascendency waned, the Maldivians expelled the Cholas and replaced the Solar Dynasty with the Lunar Dynasty. Internal strife continued in the islands, that eventually led to the introduction of Islam, replacing the indigenous Buddhist order. In the mid to late 16th century, the Arakkals of Cannanore under Ali-adi Raja I attempted to take over Malè. King Hassan IX in Malè asked for and received Portuguese help. He travelled to Cochin and was baptised as King Dom Manoel. The Portuguese did not permit Manoel to return to Malè, instead appointing Andreas-Andrea, a Maldives-born Portuguese as Manoel's governor in Malè. The Arakkals continued to harass Maldivians, often boarding Maldives boats, just as the Indian navy did a couple of months ago. The Arakkals eventually conquered Malè, holding the Maldives capital for 4 months before local patriots massacred the Indian garrison, liberating the Maldives. The liberating hero wasted no time sending word to Joseph François, the Marquis Dupleix, Governor-General of French India in Pondicherry, and asking for help. A French garrison was posted to Malè and remained there for some time. Arakkal hostility continued until 1799 when the Arakkals' main benefactor, Tippu Sultan was decisively defeated in the Battle of Seringapatam, at the hands of Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington. The Indian menace did not end there for the Maldives. In the mid-19th century, an internal rivalry within the ruling royal dynasty in Malè, saw the admission of Indian Bohra traders from the Cutch-Mandvi-Porbandar region of the British Presidency of Bombay. Soon the Bohras were able to worm their way in and take full control of all commerce in the Maldives. The final 400 or so Bohras were expelled from the Maldives in 1962. The current prosperity of the Maldives and the tourism industry could be credited to this expulsion of Indians.
