That was a smart question Rick. Yes a batsman can come down the pitch and attack the bowl if he thinks the bowler is going to bowl a Yorker. That is why great bowlers have variations and mix up their deliveries every bowl to keep the batsman guessing. Yorkers are tough to play because they do not provide batsmen the length to swing at the ball.

So ..the beauty of a Yorker is that the Batsman's natural intial blacklift of the bat is upward....and mostly you don't know when the Yorker is coming...so to get the bat down in time to counter it is counterintuitive for a batsman. Another beauty of a Yorker is that it's very very difficult to get any leverage or lift in shot of a Yorker. So even if you can get your bat to ball in time...it's very difficult to hit it long and hard. The reason most of them take a long run up is to get rhythm and speed in the ball. Unlike in baseball a bowler in cricket cannot bend his arm ...he has to roll over his arm over the shoulder....so to get the speed and momentum they take the long run up...

When considering a throw where you can bend your elbow then as rick said it doesn't matter you are throwing by running or stationary. But in cricket bowler not allowed to bend his elbow. In that case to throw in higher pace bowler has to come by running long distance to attain certain velocity before releases the ball.

Hey Rick to answer your question - running fast generates momentum and then that momentum helps in generating velocity when you realease the ball from straight hand (without bending) and also the power or thrust of shoulder and wrist gives more extra pace and speed. That's why they have to run in order to get the maximum momentum and speed required.

Also yes, the batsman is allowed to go down the pitch by taking few steps forward...it can help him counter the swing and lowness of a Yorker...but then again it can work against him ...as the batsman doesn't know if the bowler is going to bowl a yorker...if a bowler bowls a bouncer at high speed and the batsman is taking steps forward before hand....chances are the batsman is going to get hit in the jaw at high speed.

Yorker is effective when it's coming in too hot to handle or if you have enough variation on the slower one that batsman misjudges it. Too slow of a yorker (is pretty much boundary) or very consistent yorker is pretty easy deal with for international athletes.

1) Fast bowling is a feel based thing there are bowlers that just walk in and explode like Shaun Tait and then there's someone like Shohaib that had one of the longest run ups. I personally feel it has to do with both the momentum and the adrenaline rush you get by running in order to be fired up. 2) Yes Batsmen can meet the ball anywhere they like if they pick it soon enough the best in the business can scoop it over their head. 3) Cricket Au has a compilation of Waqar Younus yorkers that are a thing of beauty... 4) Also what makes these balls harder to hit is the moment in the air/change of pace.

Yes Baseball it is a Throw by pitcher where pitcher uses shoulder/hand Jerk movement to generate velocity along with body however in cricket it is elbow should remain straight no throw or jerking of the hand allowed , your hand should almost be straight (less then 15 degree) at time of delivery...hence Bowling needs long run up generate momentum ...otherwise you will never be able generate speed by just a step or two...in most cases...however spinners who spins the ball doesn't require speed you might have noticed in leg spin vedio.

ooh rick nice observation just to tell you nowdays batsmen usually have 2 options to play these kinda balls 1. some batsmen stay out of the crease so when it's yorker then can move a step or two behind and make it a full length ball(normal hittable ball) coz the bowler always bowls on the toes and wickets 2. they stay deep inside the crease giving them more time to judge yorker so they can step out and make it a low full toss(pitch that doesnt hit the ground just like in baseball but with low elevation) which is easier to slog at and korbin these bowler run bcoz they have a variety of balls to be bowled like bouncers it takes a lot of pressure from the back to bowl a bouncer which would be difficult if you bowl standing only some bowlers say that the run up give them rhytm and pace .

You can convert a yorker into a full toss to hit it outside of ground by stepping up, but its hard to do sometimes lol.

A Yorker by a fast bowler even if stepped out wouldn't make a difference if it accurate. The maximum one can convert it into is a very low full toss(hitting the ball before bouncing) which will be dipping so again very hard to hit. But to Rick's question the batsman can literally do anything he wants to hit the ball move ahead , move behind the stumps.

Yorker is usually a Pace / fast bowler's delivery like Malinga (Sri Lankan superstar). But there are some spin bowlers too like Anil Kumble of India who used to deliver regular yorkers.

A yorker was first developed by Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis the two iconic stalwarts of World Cricket. They were the first who developed that in their repertoire. I don't know the exact etiology of the term "Yorker" however, it simply means a delivery that, ideally would pitch or drop at the crease where the batsmen are standing to face the delivery delivered by the bowler. It's a tough one to bat at simply because it just shocks the batsmen, it's fast, it's at your toes. Yorker is a delivery that exploits batsmans blind spot just before he executes his shot. This delivery is usually pitched between batsmans toes and his tip of his bat. Its like you hit, if you miss, I will hit it (stumps). The swing(movement of the ball in the air just before it hits the ground) and the speed at which the ball is delivered is what makes Yorker so lethal in this game. And this delivery is not easy to say the least because a few inches here or there, the batsman can easyly hit it for runs.
