#MallikaSarabhai is an artist, actress, classical dancer and activist from Gujarat. In this conversation with Manisha Pande, she talks about how Gujarat, and particularly her hometown Ahmedabad, has changed since her childhood, her relationship with her parents, the 2002 Gujarat pogrom, her brief stint in politics, and what separates activists from politicians. “Activists don’t play on the common denominator of fear, hatred and insecurity,” she opines, “politicians do”.
Talking about the 2002 carnage, she recalls, “My neighbours were going out there in cars to loot shops and calling their friends to say, ‘Mattresses are good in this shop and we are looting so come.’ My dentist might have been out there, my gynaecologist might have been out there.”
She also explores the nuances the TV series Rocket Boys missed about the relationship of her parents, classical dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai and space scientist Vikram Sarabhai.

Once the interview started, I just could not stop listening. Manisha prepared well and did a wonderful job of interviewing her. Everything about Mallika, her family, her work, her struggles struck a deep chord in me. It was geniune and balanced. It brought out my Indianness as never before. Perhaps because I am only a few years younger than her. Whatever it may be. it opens our eyes to what we have become and what we promised ourselves to be when we became a independent country. Hyperconsumerism and xenophobic pride is wreaking a havoc once again across the world. I wish now to know more about her and her work. A wonderful human being that all Indians can be proud of.I will also share this video to all my contacts.

Wow. Interesting. I lived in a mainly hindu area, with a Muslim bakery. I remember in 90s my cousin was part of the group that joined riot against Muslims. They broke into the one bakery and distributed ice cream. My cousin who participated in it, his father was in police. And he aimed to be in police. As a child i remember thinking, how is this okay? It is stealing. Basically wrong. But no adult stopped him from going or reprimand him. The point of gujrati migrants was key. Something i always wondered.

Though I still believe art is a prerogative of the rich, and much more needs to be done to bring people from marginalised sections to performing arts. I've seen people treat my mother differently when they come to know whose granddaughter she is ,when actually she deserves a lot more respect for the struggles she's had as an individual . That her grandfather was who he was had a lot to do with the privilege he was born into. That was a wonderful interview. Thanks for bringing us this. Manisha does a great job of asking the right questions and responding well. Mallika ofcourse is lovely to listen to ,the only bit I didn't like is when she dissed Christianity; she didn't have to. I've been lucky enough to watch her perform once ,and I look forward to watching her again.

I have heard it now what she said about Ten Commandments. I think it came just off the cuff. Though, public figure that she is must have immediately made amends even if it was slip of tongue.

@@71espn Validity is subjective. She hinted at how patriarchal it is since Jesus was a man afterall ,in which case our religion isn't free from that either just because we worship goddesses. She of all people should know it ,given her body of work that addresses this issue. To be fair people are entitled to their views, I have similar ones I'm afraid but like Heera said above it's about your responsibility as a public figure when you say things in a society that's stewing in communal hatred. So in that sense I don't know if it's 'valid'.

Agreed what Mallikaji expressed about Amdawad before 80s, b4 2002 rather 1992 onwards being a 50plus age woman. We lost most beautiful rational spirit to explore multidimensional society inhabitated the city.

It takes few select Gujaratis to lit a spark and non Gujaratis to make it a leading light. All the institutions you mention are now populated and run by well deserving non Gujaratis; and Gujaratis respect them. Its their entrepreneurship that stops them being institutionalised and motivates to explore beyond visible horizons in physical and metamorphic sense. The new wave is coming from Andhra.

To deny casteism speaks tonnes about one’s privilege!

Haha Hmm yeah. I was hoping Manisha would ask her about that. About how she sees her own privilege in terms of caste and how she sees the idea of people being 'voiceless', when actually voicelessness is not some sort of a coincidence.

Recently when in north india their was a bandh announced by manuvadis against reservations they found themselves isolated as the obc’s didn’t participate hence soon thereafter hindu- muslim sporadic riots were orchestrated all over the north to cement the wedge between the oppressing castes and the oppressed castes hindus by positioning the muslims as a common enemy as is always done by these manuwadis …

Question everything! That is the real Hinduism. Read any scripture from Bhagwat Geeta to Upanishads or Vedas. They are full of just questions and answers. Can't you see that Arjun kept asking for seven chapters even after seeing the Virat form of Krishna as God himself. It is our culture to ask questions even if God himself is in front of us. But still some people feel offended that why is Supreme court is asking questions! Are they above God?

I agree with you about the true nature of Hinduism. But the RSS brand of Hindutva has nothing to do with Hinduism. It is in fact closer to Islam in its aggression, hatred, superiority. They hate Islam but seem to admireand inculcate the most extreme aspects of it.
