How to Pick CEDAR MEDICINE 🌲(Gathering CEDAR Medicine from Cedar Tree) //
Cedar is one of the sacred medicines in the indigenous culture. How do you pick cedar, to make cedar tea, or to use with smudging? If you are wondering how to pick cedar from a cedar tree, then follow along with these native teachings. The cedar medicine is so special to indigenous people, in native American smudging. Mostly Eastern Red Cedar (juniperus virginiana), which is actually a kind of juniper. Is Eastern Red Cedar ever used? Or just Northern White Cedar (thuja occidentalis)?

I pick the hard, old, dried sap from the cedar trees. It makes amazing medicine for smudge and smells amazing. I always try to not injure the tree.

What does the sap look like? I found a clump one (1) inch or so in diameter on one of my cedars, golden in colour with a hard, sponge like texture. I was afraid it was a parasite of some kind so I removed it from the tree. Could it be dried sap? Please let me know.

Ty for this! I have tall western red cedar trees in my yard and I usually buy cedar at my local crystal shop for smudging purposes, but thought to myself I have cedar right here. I was worried about damaging the tree, but I feel better after watching.

O'siyo Oginalii. Low country South Carolina. E. Red cedar is abundant where I live. I teach my children that gathering medicine in the rise of the sun is best because its normally cooler. The Best Best time to gather red cedar is early spring as the life force of the tree rises for spring. Never take more than 4 hand sized clippings from the same being and always from its four corners. It is a wonderful offering for nearly any occasion I can think of. AS sage isnt as plentiful here in nature e.r. cedar often times replaces sage in our smudging ceremony. Grams taught me cedar tree beings were among the oldest of all tree beings and are sacred to our people ... just my two cents ... blessings and walk in beauty

I wasn't sure about picking from the tree itself and didn't want to harm it or disrespect it, so I've been collecting fresh fallen leaves and boughs of cedar (or pine from pine trees) when I go harvesting. Is that proper?

how long does it take to dry the pieces before assembling my smudge stick? i’ve used sage before, but not cedar, so i’m not sure how much of a difference there is in drying.

I know ppl make pine tea and I know it’s ok to use a couple drops of pine essential oil in warm water to make pine tea is this the same for cedar essential oil? It’s ok to make cedar essential oil tea?

Hello, I have the great good fortune to have 15-17 white cedars in my backyard running the length of a 6 foot wooden fence. I always sensed these trees were special and felt that I was in communication with them but am only learning now of their significance in Native culture. Something unfortunate happened though. The trees were growing over into the neighbour's yard and last August he reached several feet across the property line to saw 4-5 limbs off every tree at the trunk! Horrendous! I noticed this year the tress did not produce cones. They are from Owen Sound in Northern Ontario so I am hopeful that they will bounce back but what an affront to these magnificent trees! Since immersing myself in Native cedar lore, I have done one picking and followed all protocols. Which do you recommend for cedar bath, dry or fresh green leaves? Also, please tell me how I can purchase a beautiful blanket like the one shown in your video? Thank you.

Ugh, idk their reasoning for doing this, I sure hope it wasn’t out of spite or just to prove a point of property line. Seems to be a growing problem these days between neighbors. To each their own, but I hope the trees have since (or will) produce cones again one day. My father n law destroyed his neighbors creek growth…he keeps his cleaned up by weed eating it, but one year decided to go across the street and do theirs as well. They have a creek that runs through their yards/neighborhood. The neighbors were really upset….not just cus they love mother nature’s natural growth, but because it was like a privacy wall between them and their other neighbors. His intentions were good but he had no right doing it without permission. He learned his lesson tho.

I agree one shouldn't cross property lines without permission, even if well-intentioned. Whatever my neighbour's reasoning was, he simply had no right to cross the property line and mutilate my trees. What he didn't bank on was that now when their kids play ball in the backyard the tree limbs aren't there anymore to stop the ball and it goes out of the yard every time. Had he not chopped the limbs off they wouldn't be having that problem. I suppose I am being petty but I do take satisfaction in that. Fortunately the trees did produce a bumper crop of cones the very next year!@@LittleBittySaidit

I personally use scissors or a pruning tool depending on which medicine I harvest. Its certainly easier to collect cedar by cutting it and leaves a clean end for the plant to regrow instead of a rip or teared off branch.

HI Travailer, great question! Indigenous culture is all around being sustainable and respectful to all living things, including trees! We do it so that the bark keeps growing, once we take what is needed and try to take it from already fallen logs too so we can let the living trees keep growing :) same with birch bark! Hopefully this helps :)

I have been taught that you don't pick some the tree directly. The branches that fell on the ground are the ones to use.

I know some tribes that practice this so the tree is not injured at all in the process :) sometimes the squirrels will do the work for you when they are after the cones on the female trees
