The famous Mamiya 645, specifically in my case this is a 645J! Ashamed to say that this was another absolute classic medium format camera that I have never tried before.
I've never been a huge fan of the 6x4.5 format... I sort of think that the big draw of medium format film is the huge step up from 35mm in terms of negative size and therefore resolution. So why then go for the smallest of the medium format frame sizes?
But there are definite advantages! And the first one is portability.
645 cameras such as this M645, or the Bronica ETRS cameras, are smaller and lighter than most of the 6x6 or 6x9 cameras. And when you're talking about some pretty chunky cameras, size and weight are things you need to consider.
So what did I think of the Mamiya 645J? You know what, I really liked it. Of course the Mamiya lenses are top notch, so what you might lose in negative real-estate, you're winning in class glass!
Overall I really like this camera. This one, once I fix it (more on that in the video) will be hitting the Ebay shelf, but only because I have a Bronica ETRS, and I don't need two 645 cameras in my collection.
Have you tried a Mamiya 645? What did you think of it? let me know!

I've been using M645 1000s and a J for the last 10 or 12 years, they have served me very well. Coincidentally I purchased a non working 45mm lens that someone had oiled. I partially dismantled it, squirted some electrical contact cleaner on the shutter blades and it's been working perfectly for years now 😊.

You did well taking Cora on your walk. I enjoyed seeing your photos and your talk about the camera and the function of it. I am still thinking about this camera.

Thank you for your kind words! The M645s are definitely worth a good look. Lots of choice between models as well, it was in production for a loooong time!

I think it’s GREAT you reviewed a 6 x 4.5 camera. I wish more influencers would promote this format. The person new to medium format can get more photos per roll thus driving down the cost per frame. How big of an enlargement do you need to start seeing the difference between 6x4.5 vs 6x6 vs 6x7? I bet VERY large.

Another cracking video as always sir! I`ve recently acquired a 645J, 80mm 1.9, 45mm 2.8 and a 110mm 2.8. Absolutely love the frames i`m getting from it, the waist level finder has even attracted the attention of my wife which will make life easier when convincing for future purchases ;) I do prefer the 6x6 format but for the money these are such a brilliant way to get into 120... Keep up the great work!

Very nice results. Speaking from experience, you'll treasure those shots before too very long; be sure you print them. I have a 645AF I was given from a friends whose father passed; hardly got to use it at all before the batteries in it let go and made a mess of the battery compartment. Haven't been able to get it working again yet, but you've inspired me to give it another go. (After finding the contacts too messed up, I'd bought not one but two replacement battery clips before and neither fit! It seems Mamiya tweaked the blobby shape of the AF a couple times along the way. Time for another try...)

Wait... I replied to this?? Where'd it go? Anyway, thank you again. I'm sure you're right, I will treasure these photos. I do try to be disciplined in storing my negatives, and in printing good ones of my girls. It won't be long before they're teenagers and the last thing in the world they want to do is go taking photos with their dad! Definitely dig out that 645 AF and try to get it fixed! I'll keep my eyes peeled for spares, if I find anything I'll let you know!

I thought the exposures were spot on tbf. Keep meaning to sell mine as I’ve not used it recently - but I can’t see myself letting go of the 80 1.9 and the 50 shift!

Thanks! Some of the other images on the rolls, especially the latter half of the Gold 200, were pretty bright and losing detail in the highlights. I think the greasy aperture blades were all happy while they were in my house, in the warm, but they obviously gradually gummed up out in the cold. Lesson learned, do it properly the first time! I feel like I've learned that lesson before... maybe a few hundred times. I am starting to think I may not ever learn...

My only Mamiya- so far- is the C3. And it is the only camera I know I will never part with. A 645 of some description is very much on my list of next MF cameras to buy. Nice shots, btw.

That first camera that you fall in love with stays with you forever right? I would definitely recommend the M645 if you're in the market for a 645. And if you're already a Mamiya fan then you're likely to love these lenses too. I probably won't keep this one. The equivalent of your C3 is my Bronica S2A, and as a huge fan of that camera, I am naturally drawn to other Bronicas! I have an ETRS, and that is my go to 645, so I'll be popping the Mamiya on eBay soon. But it's definitely a great cameras, I highly recommend!

Awesome selection of photos mate well done team. I have the RB67 Pro. Love it but man it's a beast. I prefer my Bronica 545 and my old folders. One day I'll do an RB67 v Voigtlander Bessa 2 (6x9) comparison, I really hope the Bessa kicks ass, so much easier to kart around.

So I was sitting here trying to check my M645 was still working but having problems with the wind locking and the shutter button locking. Now I hear it needs a battery or it won't work! Hope you are right. Ordered a new one.

Oil on blades might not be a fool oiling them, could be coming from the internal lens grease. I’ve seen lenses left in direct sunlight or direct heat end up with oil on the blades. Either way, whatever the cause no alternative to a proper strip down service.
@the120ist
@the120ist Жыл бұрын
I've seen plenty of that before, where you're getting oil gradually leaking into the blades. The reason I thought this one was a deliberate act of stupidity was that these blades were literally dripping... and it hadn't gummed up, it was all fresh and liquid, and everywhere! I also discovered that one of the screws that you need to remove to get to the blades is jammed pretty solid, that's the reason I cut the corner and just mopped up what I could to get it working again. I suspect it's also the reason the oil was there. I'm guessing someone tried to get in and fix it, got stuck on that screw and decided to throw oil at it instead. I shall now set about working that screw loose!

Love this camera. Just got mine this past Christmas. Do you ever experience dust or specs of little hairs in your photos? I’m wondering where I have to clean up so my developed photos are cleaner..
@the120ist
@the120ist Жыл бұрын
If you're getting clear, crispy defined specks of dust and hairs, it's on the negatives. Dust on the lens won't come out clearly defined like that. Are you developing yourself? Or sending your films away to be developed?
@RebelwoaCause

@@the120istI send them off with a developer. I actually have the same viewfinder as you. Do you ever notice as you press on the shutter the green light flashes into red? I think that happens to me because pressing down on the shutter moves the camera down a little, but the results aren’t tarnished because I’m shooting at 1/250. That being said, I’m gonna utilize the tripod more.

I recently discovered your channel and have been really enjoying it. I do have a question about repairing lenses for the Mamiya 645 1000s and hope you can help. I have the Mamiya-Sekor C 45mm 2.8 and the focus ring seems detached (floating) from the lens barrel and won’t focus. Is this an easy fix or do you know of anyone you’d recommend for repairing it?
@the120ist
@the120ist 11 ай бұрын
Hey, sorry it's taken me a while to respond. I don't have the Mamiya any more, so I can't check directly. However, general thoughts on things that go wrong with focus rings - often on cameras of that generation the knobbly bit on the focus ring that helps you grip it is a poor quality rubber or soft plastic, that can get saggy with time, the glue holding it in place loosens and the grip spins freely. Is that the case with yours? If it's not the glue, but the ring itself that's spinning freely, then often the focus rings are held in place with tiny grub screws that keep it pinned to the barrel underneath. If that's the case, peeling away the knobbly rubber bit that covers the focus ring should reveal some tiny screws. Take the knobbly bit off, tighten up the screws and all should be well again. Bear in mind that the focus ring will likely be out of position - ie the distance markings won't be lined up correctly any more. Tighten up the screws, rotate until you find one end or the other (infinity or closest focus distance, the barrel itself should hit a stop at each end), undo the screws again, line up the focus ring, tighten the screws again, and then glue your knobbly rubber bit back in place over the top! Let me know if that works!
@mollyanderson449
@mollyanderson449 10 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for the help! It was actually the screws that just needed to be tightened. I aligned the distance markers with infinity, but it still seems to be just a bit off according to the scale and actual focus. I will need to do some fine-tuning, but in any event, the focus ring works as it should and the lens is once more functional. Thanks again for all the help!!!

So there I was, wondering why I'd never seen anyone rubbing a roll of 120 film, and voila! you immediately dropped the roll. That's explained why I don't see people rubbing their 120 rolls.
