Happy to see another video from you. Your last video about the Rochester/Alaris conspiracy gave me a lot of hope about the future of color film. I would love if you could continue giving updates on that topic. Other news that gave me hope were that Kodak is involved in developing new largeformat cinema cameras and even talks about bringing back Vistavision.

I have a RB67 and it is fun to use. I take mine out but maybe not as much as I’d like. I also have a Fuji GX680 and that is really a beast but that hasn’t stopped me from taking it out. I’m 71 so my outings aren’t that strenuous anymore and I use a canvas wagon to move my gear around rather than a backpack. I took both out once and you should have seen the looks I got and the questions that people asked. After some recent heart issues my collecting has slowed down and now I’m more interested in going out and using what I have rather than adding to my collection. This is a hobby that I have enjoyed since I was 8 yrs old helping my mom print B/W pictures in our bathroom at home. I was the head tray agitator. It was just magical watching an image appear in the tray while I agitated.

Afte r nearly 10 years of listening to the youtubers tell me the camera was too heavy to use much in the field and it had to be carried in an inconvenient, slow to access backpack that I hated putting in the sand, I finally started upgrading my pro s to sd backs to eliminate the constant fear of light leaks, and kl lenses. So wanted to carry it more out of studio. I use a black rapid strap on a mamiya 645 pro sd which weighs 5 lbs with elf and motor drive vs 6 lbs for the rb with lens and back. No place to attach the safety strap on the BR, so tried using the optech strap cross body. HOLY COW! It can rest on my R hip taking weight off, wrapping around chest and back took off more and it can be lightly be supported with the r hand or pressed against the hip to lighten it further. I now carry it for 3-4 hours no problem. When it instantly swings into position for shooting, I pop the finder and magnifier and cock the shutter and am ready to focus and shoot. I advance the film after each shot but not cock the shutter so no accidental firing, can't see through the viewfinder till it is cocked so am reminded to cock the shutter and if I don't use the camera and put it away, both mirror and lens springs aren't cocked. Thanks for all your videos, great to hear from folks inside the business who know what they are talking about instead of some bozo unboxing and taking first shots who doesn't have a clue wasting my time.

Having watched pretty much all available videos on using the RB in the field I think you have nailed it. Not a “What’s up” to be heard, used a tripod, was a considered and thoughtful narrative and, most of all, you ended up with some well considered and thoughtful images . 10/10

Great video and commentary. I always cock the shutter on my RZ (advance the film) and use the dark slide to prevent accidentally tripping the shutter release. I use a neck strap to steady the camera outside - the rig is already heavy enough without dragging around a tripod. Plus I don’t need to stand on my tiptoes to look through the viewfinder. So, why bother? The 6 x 7 form factor perfectly fits an 8 x 10 piece of enlarging paper. No cropping in the darkroom! And the detail of architecture and outside things is unbelievable.

I just looked at what was available in your video library and was very impressed with the variety of topics. In addition to the RB67 and RZ67 mentioned in this video, you have videos about Leica rangefinders, Hasselblad SLRs, Hasselblad XPan, 4x5 large format film cameras, 8x10 large format film cameras, TLR medium format cameras, Nikon 35mm SLRs, Pentax 35mm SLRs, Pentax medium format SLRs, and many others. Plus, you also develop your own film.

I prefer small cameras and lenses. Laziness, well developed, size and weight of RB /RZ is monumental. I've used Mamiya Twin lens mostly in studio. Some big advertising work and Industrial assignments. In Film it was Pentax, Nikon and Leica-M. I once had to copy some large photo mural, a collage of family images! I used Pentax 6x7, 135mm Macro-Takumar and a Spotmatic with 50mm Macro. Prints professionaly printed as Colour. 20x30cm and bigger, I could see no difference! The printer did but it was subtle! No more tripod, no more Big camera. Digital ushered in a new era. Film is beautiful, but clean images can be nicer and way more economical. I still use film! Any important work, is now digital. Perfect dupes, colours same in reprints.. I enjoyed! Need to see more people shots! Walks are my everyday!

It's really nice you went with Portra to show the full potential of that kit. These are lovely pictures. I have the same first impressions about the 127mm. It feels a bit long, but it is also the lightest and shortest lens in that range, right? I am about to try the 90mm K/L which is bulkier.

Thanks for your video, Nico! After I picked up film photography last year, I had my dad - who is a professional photographer who hasn't shot on film since the very beginning of the digital age - look for his old RZ67 which he eventually found in the attic a couple of months ago. Because of this, I feel bad because every now and then I get the urge to exchange the RZ for an RB... it just looks like it is more of a hands-on experience, I guess. Would be interesting to hear what made you switch (unless there's a video where you explain it which I missed)! Anyway, what you said about gear and wanting more and different gear without really using it definitely made me reflect on that. I'll keep using the RZ for now - it's amazing how it seems to be in almost perfect condition after just sitting around for what must be close to 20 years (only annoying thing is the rubber on the underside having become sticky, so I had to tape it over)!

Nice upload, Nico. It would be better if labs offered raw scans as a routine part of C-41 development. In my experience C-41 is too “maleable” for someone who wasn’t there to edit it. Feedback or notes are necessary. Slides are more “objective.” I’ve been more pleased with lab scans of slides. By the way, how does the ground glass on the RB compare to a Yashica 635 if you’ve ever used one? Focusing quickly at f5.6 or wider can be a chore with my Yashica.

@ 7:25 I related to that. I rarely ever had a need for a studio priority camera. I’m more into architectural and environmental , events. I came from action, sports press / events. I got a good deal on a Mamiya RB67 Pro S w/ 70mm back , sport Finder & had a 100-200/6.2 but I popped a 90/3.8 and getting to know it. It’s certainly heavier & bulkier that I was wanting for walk around but I wanna make use it it. I do like 6x6, 645 for casual events welk around. What do you find is a good but reasonable cost compact fun camera for that?

Stop bitch’in about carrying a Mamiya 67 rb around.
