Bees on flowers are the most challenging photographic subject matter for me, which is why I like photographing them so much!
I went out on with the goal of finishing a roll of super8 and ended up making a bunch of bee photos instead, I'm still working on finishing the super8 though haha!

Cool shots Will! If you want a harder challenge (and if this creature exists in South Africa), try photographing a "hummingmoth". I got some decent shots on digital but it was still a pain to focus and I would probably never try with film!

Personally I don't understand the reasoning behind why people don't shoot in mid day. "Omg its horrible for portraits etc" yes because you are shooting Mid day portraits like you would at 6am/6pm ofc it won't work. I actually find mid day really appealing. Though my work has more emphasis on shadows than most so. But "Modern" photography really needs to evolve past just 6am/6pm. Ironic that most photographers want to replicate works of old masters but they run away from harsh light when harsh light and shadows (Chiaroscuro) are the main characteristics of paintings from 1300s-1900s. State of the industry aside, your work is lovely as always Will!
@willysheepskin
@willysheepskin 2 жыл бұрын
A solid point! I like to think of all light as having certain subject matter that will work well in it, I reckon the thing with mid day light the way most people think of it is it's not just the angle that sucks but the brightness haha, so exposing for it crushes the shadows and makes things more contrasty than would be ideal for some!

Especially the pun in the title hahaha it's really incredible to see what you're doing to shoot bees on film because I actually take a lot of photos of bees for my work but none of them are in any capacity even remotely close to the beauty and quality of yours. I always take them either in the field with my phone or under a digital microscope in the lab, you have just convinced me to give it a go and see if I can capture something more beautiful this summer! I find your videos very inspiring and motivating to go shoot :) thank you for doing what you do

@@willysheepskin I started watching the video on my way home from work and finished this morning on my way to work so I thought the title changed but figured it was just me being exhausted hahaha I'm a research biologist at a natural history museum so I spend most of my time in summer doing fieldwork and collecting specimens for whatever research projects we have going on (usually pollinator related but not just bees also other pollinator species) and the off season doing lab work and other museum collection work. I'm thinking I'll pick up a 55 or 105 micro nikkor as they seem to still be relatively affordable and I'll let you know how it goes! Btw I was curious what you thought of ektar 100? I had thought about shooting it for a while but about two months ago I picked some up and just recently developed and scanned it and extremely happy with the colours it provides so far. Definitely a red cast but I like the saturation it provides in dark greens and blues as well.

I feel you with the Super 8. Many years ago, I was gifterd two rolls of 35mm Kodachrome when they were still developing it. I wanted to take some great lasting pictures and waited and waited and the end of developing was getting closer so I ended up shooting absolute and utter garbage of a photos. Then I lived through end of sale of FP100 film, expired 669 polaroids... stuff that at one point was quite readily available and now, when somebody offers me some one of a kind expired film I decline. I want to buy films in packs of 10s at least and not have to savor every frame (not that I intentionally waste it) with the knowledge that I can pop a new roll in any time. Sadly, even stuff like ColorPlus and Kodak Gold I might have the last rolls already loaded in my cameras without realizing it :/

Yeah, practicing Macro Photography on film is even more frustrating than trying to free hand reverse Macro on digital and that's saying something. On the bright side Capetown is either sunny or its not so. So when you do get to shoot you're permanently f11-f16
@willysheepskin
@willysheepskin 2 жыл бұрын
Whaaat on earth is free hand reverse Macro? Sounds fascinating!
@ReclusiveEagle
@ReclusiveEagle 2 жыл бұрын
@@willysheepskin You take a lens, reverse it and hold it with your hand in front of the camera since you can't mount it [That's where free hand comes in] You can get reverse Macro Rings where you mount the lens reverse onto your camera from the filter thread so you don't have to free hand. Basically you lose infinity focus for close focus so any lens can be a macro but it works better the wider your lens. My 80mm 1.8 does nothing when reversed [Probably due to how the elements are designed] But generally you can get 1:1 with a reverse 50mm and sometimes even 6:1 if you get a 10mm lens

Excellent Will! The challenge is its own reward. Walking away with some great images is just a bonus. I love the way you continually challenge yourself. Exactly Justin! The images are a bonus indeed! And the macro focus bees are for sure my current biggest challenge when it comes to subject matter haha, there's just so much movement and precise timing needed, and the razor thin focus demands such intense concentration - and sometimes that doesn't even work lol! Crazy that it isn't the first time you've heard of someone dropping a camera out of a plane! It was my first encounter with the concept and now I'm fascinated haha, although I too sincerely hope it doesn't happen to either of us! I think I have one or two lying around, but I'm so keen on darkroom printing stuff I don't think I'd want to use them for anything besides video, if I'm doing stills I want to be able to get them in the darkroom haha! Stills from miniDV cameras and the like are really fun though, the quality is so terrible that it actually approaches being good again but from the opposite side of the spectrum looool

Gorgeous photos William. Love the photo at 6:17 .. Question. Do you prefer giving your film out for development or at home and why? I'm an amateur photographer and have never developed my own film and am in two minds on whether I should invest in all the chemistry, scanner etc or give them out for developing/scanning
@willysheepskin
@willysheepskin 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you kind fish! For color stuff I prefer having a lab do it because the machines they use are more consistent than I'd be able to manage temperature and timing wise, I have a Jobo that I could probably use but I just don't have the time these days! For black and white though if you have the time it's definitely worth learning to do at home, I do my own when I can find a moment to, otherwise I send it off to the lab lol! Investing in a good scanner of your own could be a great idea though if you can find one for the right price that has quality you're happy with, having control over the scanning process can be an important part of developing a look and understanding of the way you want your photos to turn out!

one advantage of home developing, esp. with Large format shots, as these are single sheets, is the total control over development, not having to "expose" all 10/12/15/24/36 shots in a roll (120 or 35) to the same chemistry, or development time, but in This genre of film photography, using 120 or 35 mm format; multiple shots done in one 'shot', does save chemistry, aka one tank for all shots!, and as a computer controlled machine develops and controls temperature, etc. you do get more consistent results, shot to shot, roll to roll; and as the machine is more expensive, with greater throughput, more expensive and consistent chemistry can be used, as you are filling a bulk tank.
