Mamlambo Fossils

3 жыл бұрын

I head back to the site of the tiny fossil shark teeth to see if there are any more hiding in the layers there. This follows on from this video: • Miocene fossil shark t...
I retrieve 9kg of sediment and dissolve it using sodium hexametaphosphate so I can use a sieve to retrieve the shark teeth.
The teeth are possibly from a Dalatias sp. shark.
Along the way I find some really great fossil crabs that I will be prepping soon. On the way back I go and check out some large fossil verts that Jordan had spotted and find a fossil that looks like Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Those are some spectacular vertebra you found! Can't imagine finding something like that on the beach! Much be a partial skeleton, no? And, yes, even though the biggest pieces can't be hauled off of the beach in one piece (not even with your cart), it might be still be worth trying to get it off in multiple pieces - that is, if you think the vertebrae will hold. Otherwise they'll be just lost to the sea, and that seems like a real shame... :( Also, this sodium hexaphosphate seems an interesting chemical. Does it only work on clay, or do you think it'll also manage to break up uncompacted clay-y sandstone? If got an Eocene deposit I normally get the fossils out of by breaking the soil up by hand, which occasionally risks fracturing the fossils within. Sodium hexaphosphate seems like a way less destructive approach that I might give a try once.
@MamlamboFossils
@MamlamboFossils 3 жыл бұрын
I think it can be used to break up anything with a weak bond, like the siltstone. I haven't tried it on a sandstone yet, I see no reason it won't as it should just be the particle size that is different? If there were any diagnostic bones in that bunch of vertebraes, I would have tried to get them off the beach. Maybe like some skull elements :) I'm rather limited by space at my house so have to be choosy with what I keep. Let me know how that sandstone reacts to the Sodium HMP!
@alexandermelchers1497
@alexandermelchers1497 3 жыл бұрын
Will do, though it may be a while before I get new stuff from that location, especially since access to the right layer is difficult right now. But I think it would make for an interesting experiment anyway ;)

What is that @5:20 - 5:44 ? Is it the fossilized stomach contents of an ancient shell eating fish ? or just a conglomerate of shell fragments locked in a matrix ?

Hey I found a concretion that was shaped like a football and it has two brown parts sticking out of each side. I was wondering if it is anything or just a random rock, also great video

So i did somme online reasearch on my possible whale vertebrae and i did not find anny marine mammal fossil in romania , there are lots of similar ones near the carapatians in the targu jiu area , new species?
@MamlamboFossils
@MamlamboFossils 3 жыл бұрын
It's hard to ID animals form worn bones like the vertebrae, but will be worth sending some photos to a local university or museum I think.

@@MamlamboFossils well i know is marine , it has the 2 simetrical holes on the side and is very dense , i know eastern europe was under water but is whale-dolphin like , i'l see what info i can find , judging now i don't think is new but look in paleontogy books in a few months for free-wheel-osaurus :))

Is there enough of a difference in density to use gravity separation methods like panning for situations like the teeth in siltstone?
@MamlamboFossils
@MamlamboFossils Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if that will work, I might try it one day!

@@MamlamboFossils I thought about it for another couple of minutes and realised that it will depend entirely on what the mineralisation is. The specific gravity of pyrites or iron oxides are definitely high enough to be pannable, but I don't know enough about fossils to know if that'd be true for other kinds :)

Are the small teeth from juvenile sharks or are they just small fish?
@MamlamboFossils
@MamlamboFossils 3 жыл бұрын
Good question! I think the species of shark was quite small but can't tell you if it was a juvenile or adult. I don't know enough about the species 😁
