@@bettyir4302 I was so blessed to learn to cook that way from both of my Grandmas & my Momma! The day Grams told me I was a great cook & could make something awesome out of whatever I had available (which at that time wasn't much) you had to peel me off the ceiling, it was the highest compliment! Now that they are all gone I appreciate the times I had to learn from them even more.

I just got back home from NYC visiting my son daughter in law and my granddaughter. She marched in the St. Patrick Day Parade. When I got to their apartment I asked my son “ what do you want for dinner “ he said mom, chicken and dumplings. So that is what I made. My hope is one day my granddaughter will talk about me like you talked about your grandma.

My Great grandmother would go into the kitchen and make a full meal and I never knew how she could do that as it seemed like there wasn't a lot of food. She always had a meat, potatoes, beans and a salad plus a dessert. I loved her so very much and still miss her today at the old age of 76.

My grandma was ftom west tenn around belles tenn. She only went to 3 rd grade. My grandpa was from russelville: dardanelle Arkansas. He went to 8 th grsde. They owned a grocery store, and my grandma was a great cook. Her cherry pie filling was canned under the Thank You brand pie filling- my uncle worked for Michigan fruit canneries in Benton Harbor Michigan and he was a cook when they started their pie filling. She also cooked for President Truman when he came to Caruthersville Mo on a campaign stop and stayed with a federal judge there. My grandma was his housekeeper and cook. So she got to cook for President Truman. He offered her a job cooking in the White House as his personal chef. She refused because she was raising her family and they owned a grocery store in Caruthersville Missouri. But she was a fantastic cook. I always had a huge garden, so made all of her own clothes, and sold Avon. She did all of her route for Avon on foot. She did not drive a car. She was crown queen of Avon one year because she had the most sales in her district. She only had a third grade education, but she was so very smart. her mother was full blood Cherokee Indian and her father was full blood Irish. Her mothers maiden name was Dulin, and her uncle, her mother‘s brother, was the leader of the Dulin gang, who robbed banks.

Hello Tom & Melissa- looks like a great recipe. Nothing like our grandmother’s also in my case mother as well was both great cooks & bakers. I often think of my grandmother she always made & canned Sandhill Plum Butter. When she opened a jar she would have it in a refrigerator glass dish with a glass lid. I am said that she passed in 1974 & nobody has her recipe for making the Sandhill plum butter. At meal time she would always set it on the table for us to put on our bread to have our meal. Then 10 days after she passed my grandfather passed with a broken heart . The doctor said nothing was wrong with him but a broken heart. Tom & Melissa - we were blessed to have wonderful grandparents. God Bless you both & we can continue to count our blessings. Thanks for continuing the wonderful recipes of your Meemaw. 🙏👏👏👏💕

Lester Laminack's "Saturdays and Tea cakes" was my first encounter of someone agreeing with my families spelling of Mammaw. I was blessed to attend sessions lead by Lester at a reading and writing conference. 💖 I'm a Mammaw of two young boys. I love cooking with the oldest one. I introduced him to yeast bread a couple of weeks ago. I also use half salad dressing and half mayo in macaroni and potato salads. Mom always used chopped bread and butter pickles and a little pickle juice. I find the Aldi store brand bread and butter pickles taste close to Mom's home canned bread and butter pickles. 😋

My grandmother, we called her Mammy, cooked the same way, never measured anything. I was the one that loved to cook with her and I cook the same way. One of my cousins called me once wanting to know Mammy's recipe for her green tomato relish, to which I answered she didn't have one. I know what we put in it, but no idea how much of each thing was added, my job was to grind up the green tomato's, this was with a hand grinder that attached to the table top. I would grind with one arm till it was tired and switch to the other and it would take all day. I was always rewarded with several jars to take home with me. Sadly that recipe went with her, but I still have lots of memories of cooking and canning with her. Thanks for reminding me.

My grandmother and mom were my inspiration for cooking too..My cousin Jody Payne was Willie Nelsons lead guitarist and my Grandmother would cook fried chicken with all the sides and us kids would take turns churning homemade ice cream and play baseball and she always baked a homemade angel food cake and My grandparents owned Red Gate Fishing camp in Garrard County and one year Jody brought Willie with him and it was a great time...I sure do miss those times...

You are so lucky to have known your gramma. My dads mom died before I was born. He was the baby of 10 kids. She was in her 40s when he was born and got late diabetes. My mother was from Alaska, and I met her mom 1 time in my life. My step grandmother, she was more partial to her natural grandkids, my stepbrother and sister. Cherish those memories! I try so hard to be as wonderful a gramma as I can to all my grankids. I taught one to make fried egg sandwiches a few weeks ago. Now she makes them all the time! Lol

I love your channel. You and your wife are like "Peas and Carrots" together, and everything that your Grandma would have wanted! I miss my Mom so much. She would have made her salad the same way with the exception of using Miracle Whip only. Keep up the good work. I know that our parents and grandparents are watching us from above. They would bless every concoction that we create and give us a thumbs up!

You brought a tear to my eye...missing my grandma. She lived 2 houses down from us, too. She definitely spoiled me. She made the best pies, and I learned to crimp the crust from her. Thank you forthe memories.

Broke my heart when he started tearing up about his Mama maw. I miss my Grandmas they are the best, but my favorite was my Grandpa and I was his favorite too. I was his little stubble duck, when he was in the hospital he told my colleagues (doctors and nurses) I worked with that I was his little stubble duck. I can't tell you how many days I had to explain what a stubble duck was. I so miss my Grandpa, he was the same way he could do math so fast in his head. I love you Grandpas and Grandmas if your listening thank you and I will leave the World better than when I found it.

I love hearing about your "Mamaw." This sounds similar to our family recipe minus olives and Parmesan. I still make it occasionally.

I always enjoy watching you cook. I get so hungry waiting till you take that bite. Allot of things has happened to me this last couple of years. I lost my home. My job and last week my car got wrecked. But I'm not giving up. I'm still trying to stand on my feet. At 68 it's not easy. So please say a prayer for me and keep cooking. Love from Texas Janet

Thank you Tom and Melissa for sharing this macaroni salad. And thank you for the wonderful memories of your grandmother. Your emotions started flowing and so did mine because of all the love you had for her. I bet she has been watching from up above. Every once in a while you have forgotten maybe one step or ingredient and I’ve heard you say “oh my I forgot”. The reason you remembered was that your grandmother whispered in you ear “Tom you forgot to add so and so”. I love macaroni salad but never with olives. Think I will follow this exact recipe for our Easter buffet. ❤️

Honoring your mom and grandmother is so awesome. I was closest to my husbands grandmother. We also called her Mamaw. She couldn't read or write so only a few of her recipes have records. Everything from memory. I finally manage to duplicate her pound cake and fresh coconut cake. I still miss her everyday. I love macaroni salad, but only homemade. Deli stuff is too sweet.

When you choked up talking about your Grandma I felt that in my heart! I feel the same way about my Grandmas, Momma & my Aunts. The way they taught us with love served in every bite...nothing compares! Thankfully I cook like Grams because trying to write her recipes when they were...enough of this until it's the right consistency, whatever veggie that helps the color, the seasonings that go best with what you are using & well, you know what you all like, etc... Yeah, try to write that!! 😊

How funny! Your description sounds like a good friend of mine who is in Glory now. She gave me a recipe once and I had made it many times (always checking the recipe as I cooked), but one day I couldn't find the recipe and called her to ask how much mayonnaise and she giggled and said "some," and then I giggled. Can't wait to see her again----soon! Come quickly, Lord Jesus!

@@readytogo3186 I understand that completely & look forward to seeing you both when we enter into our true life-I call this life here my practice run! One day a friend of mine asked me for a recipe & I told her much the same as Grams did without really thinking about it. She said, "Do you EVER measure anything??" I beat feet to Grams' house & went in saying I did it, I did it, I did it, I'm a great cook because I turned into you! She said, you always have been a great cook but...do you want to explain the rest? That was more than 30 years ago & I can still remember her laugh! What a sweet yet funny memory!
