Mammoth Transport, WORLDS LARGEST homemade backyard boat, yacht build, Kaleidoscope. VOLUME #3

This is the Mammoth breakdown, transport, and launch of my homemade backyard boat (yacht) build. Kaleidoscope. Volume #3. Before I started the build I put a lot of thought into it. I know most wonder why the desert? Well I drove the coast from Baja Mexico to Seattle looking for some property close to any water with sea access., to no avail. Mexico, too many import problems. Beach front in Calif. out of the question never get approval. Plus the salt in the air would contaminate my welding. A boat yard? Can't work the hours I would be working, and I'd have to hire yard workers, not working to my expectations. Then why the desert? If I have to truck it, once on the trailer doesn't make much difference how far.
When looking for a place to build, I would drive the course to the marina making sure there would be no obstacles. When designing the boat, it had to break down into pcs. I wanted to work with 20"x5" sheets of 5086 marine alloy aluminum to minimize the welding. I knew where I was going to make my sections before starting. I hope I've answered a few of your questions, Please watch, it's a long video but I tried to cover most of the process of my build. Thanks for taking the time to watch and subscribe.

This man is absolutely brilliant!! His method of making this, and how he interlocked the pieces is astonishing. He knew exactly what he wanted and how he was going to do it. The pieces all fit together like tongue and groove. Sir, you are a scholar and a gentleman!! I've watched the interview about the theft of this wonder and your thought process far in advance of the build. I hope more people watch this and it makes them believe in themselves because human beings are exceptionally resilient and durable. You just have to want it, and have the drive to make it happen!!

From 1990 to 1992 I visited my sister in Perris/Hemet area. I used to walk to Perris Airport and watch the Skydiving and Ultralight flying which was a big deal then. Now I’d like to go back to that little airport and reminisce those good times. I wish I had been aware of this “backyard” boat building project!

I was amazed when I saw the hulls floating and staying upright. I know the area very well. The transport company had their work cut out for them. You had a great plan and it worked very well. I am sure the Coast Guard had a lot of questions. I vagely remember when this happening.

Hi, I had quite a concern on that same thought from the marina architect, I knew it would float without a roll, but when we put the hull in, he had his biggest men run back and forth on the swim step trying to roll it in the sling, Not so much as a tremor! They also told me I couldn't bring a boat from the desert heat to the cool sea air and have it fit???? But it did.

@@KlydeOscope So much for the "experts". 50 degrees centigrade will cause about 1mm expansion over 1 metre. That's 1/1000 so quite considerable over a full size hull. BUT the parts will have all cooled equally during the journey so everything should fit. As indeed it did.

The difference between Doug And Clyde is many. Both men are driven to set out and complete a dream. Respect to both💪 Doug got a bunch of steel and started a learn as you go process. Learning and teaching as he went. Get-er-done attitude. Clyde is a little more detailed and precise. He took the time to research locations enough to find a spot far enough away from the ocean to keep the salt air away from contaminating his welds. ( Until the final assembly of course). Inventing processes and tooling to help sand and prep the boat for final primer and paint... I asked Clyde earlier about getting insurance and if he had the same issues as Doug. I would like to see a video of Clyde doing a "recap" of what he went through to get to where he is today. I think there's still many episodes of information Clyde could share... It would be very interesting.

Clyde you still there buddy ? I'm so amazed by you man. This is an unbelievable achievement. To think building a house would have been far easier is what blows my mind .. a house you don't have to move it afterwards among many other reasons a house build is more simple . So considering that and you choose to build not just a yacht, but a super luxury yacht that looks like it came from a factory and even had tap handles in side ... you are incredible. Is it true the boat got stolen :( if so man that's so terrible ..

The sheer scale of the ambition here, the skill, the vision, the brutal hard graft, miles of aluminium welding and grinding, co ordination, logistics, innovation, it truly blows my mind. Very well executed, hat is completely off! Curious to know how the project was financed? I can’t imagine my bank manager being too convinced if I said I was going to self build a super yacht in the middle of a desert, but this legend actually did it!🤣⚓️

Quite a stroke of genius to plan on something like this in a way that it simply works at first attempt! Epic build indeed it’s just too bad the quality of the video camera to document this journey at the time were average and imagine if drones were around.

Hi Clyde - long time fan ;-) I am still wondering how you spaced the hulls perfectly for the super structure to be lowered in the exact correct place with the water being less than perfectly stable. Lots of lifting and lowering? Once it's rested on the hulls it can't really be adjusted right? Oh... and why is Kirk still rocking a mullet in 1994? Never mind - i know the answer....

i was wondering how he was going to move it when i was watching the video of him building it. probably would have been cheaper to buy or rent land on the waters edge and build it there. to build such a beautiful ship and have to cut it up to move it would be heartbreaking.

met you years back when you first brought this beauty to PV. Honor to have been aboard your vessel sir. I was shocked when i herd it was stolen and then ended up changing hands. maybe you can clear up the story.

Hey salty dog, I don't remember the name but I hope you enjoyed the cruise. Yes she was stolen, and we did get her back after an unbelievable experience. That's going to be another Video down the road. Thanks for your comment.

So you built it to take apart and transport, like a double-wide house you assemble on site, or did you cut the frame and rebolt and weld

I have so many questions! Why didn't you build it in sections instead of building it whole, then cutting it up? As carefully planned out as it was, I imagine you could have done this as well. It seems like you would have compromised the rigidity of the structure by doing it this way. Since it has been afloat for decades that clearly wasn't an issue! How could you be sure the hulls would float to their lines and be absolutely level (fore and aft and port to starboard) when you placed the deck sections back on? Even a tiny fraction of a degree would result in large gaps. And how did you get the hulls the exact spacing port to starboard? Especially as they were floating getting them spaced properly and keeping them there while you lowered the deck sections must have been very tricky. After placing the deck sections on the hulls, did you immediately weld them? It was not shown on the video, but the longer they sat, the more likely to have gaps? I can't imagine the red tape getting permits to transport something like that on public roads. And the cost. Do you skipper the charter boat now, or has that been passed along to someone else? What an amazing project!

I cant believe I just came across this build. This makes the houseboat that I built that took 6 months look like a dinghy. The lines on that boat are perfect. I have to ask were you a self taught aluminum welder? did you use a spool gun?

Fkn phenomenal, as a one man project. The rigging and hauling must have cost $35,000.

Do you have any family in upstate NY? Andrew Camarata perhaps - this is like something he would do but it would have been made from shipping containers and have an excavator involved somehow
