Mamod Sl1 unboxing and first runs

Heres a quick review of a Mamod Sl1 loco that I bought off of eBay recently. She is a great running engine and I have lots of future plans for it.

Looks like a real good runner Everett.As Steve said there are several mods you can do.Spirit burner or gas burner.Regulator.Higher pressure safety valve. Then it'll be able to pull a real heavy turnip train😃

You've found yourself a great little runner! My first loco was a Mamod copy, an MSS and I was very disappointed with it initially. It leaked steam from everywhere and could hardly do a circuit around my 8x4 layout. It took me ages and quite a few mods to get it to run properly, but worth it in the end. Tip, I put some heat shrink tube on the reverser lever, stops you burning your fingers. Re your track, keep smiling 😜. Looking fwd to see how you're getting on 👍

Thanks for the comment, I am loving the feedback! Since this was preowned it was already broken in properly so I didnt have any problems with leaks, just running on track that isnt suited for it! I like the idea of a tube over the reverser, it would make it longer for finer control also.

Thanks man, its got a long way to go. Just ordered some broader curves for the track so hopefully something can finally go around the damn thing.

These are Great little locos and that one looks a good runner. A gas burner set up and a 25psi saftey valve will greatly improve its running and with practice on the reverser you can get these to run nice and steady.

Also mamod or mss track works best something to do with flange and rail profile.Dont put the reverser all the way over.Maybe half way.Theres a sweet spot that makes it more controlable.Hope that helps.

I will see about purchasing some broader curves. Menards has some, or maybe go to eBay. What do you think a good radius is? Im glad you enjoyed it!

@@everett86 the minimum I ran mine in was 5 foot diameter. So unsure about anything smaller.

To tame this sucker is a hard job; meanwhile I did the gas burner, the regulator valve; outlet valve and still she goes like a rocket….or not at all….

Im hoping when I install the gas burner it will be better but I know it wont. Im only fooling myself. The track itself isnt so great. I just love failure I guess!
