This one is from about 1962-1963. My father wrote, produced, directed and wrote the jingle for this one. In 1963 he also did Mr. Clean as a police officer. In 1965 it was "Mean Mr. Clean". All good stuff. Thanks for posting. TC

I like how Mr. Clean just shows up and hands the guy a bottle of Mr. Clean and makes him do everything while standing there like a supervisor that acts like he works harder than everyone else.

Myth. The man in question cleaned basement walls, a paintbrush, and his car. Not really specifically womanly things to clean like a sink or laundry. Basements aren't exactly women's hotspots, and believe it or not both men and women like to paint. Who do you think did the painting in the 1950s while the women were staying at home not being worthless?

This ad looks like the companion piece to the one using the same jingle but with a female lead and vocal that was done by Warner Brothers' cartoon department (ex-Chuck Jones animator Phil Monroe was handling direction for the studio's commercial unit by 1961 -- not sure if this would have been his work, since the commercial department had been created four years earlier).

They might have reuse most of the early Mr. Clean commercial. As the commercial ends, they feature the Mr. Clean bottle which in the late 1960's. Because the Mr. Clean bottle at the end of the commercial was plastic and it says "New! Better in the Bucket! You can smell the difference". When Mr. Clean was introduced in 1958, it came in glass.

@sarniatownreggae - There were a LOT of creepy advertising characters from the 1950s and 1960s. If I was a 3-year-old, I would have been scared out of my mind by McDonald's Speedee. My parents basically kept me isolated in the boonies until I was 9 - I had never heard of McDonald's (or pizza) until I was 10 in 1974. We went to all of two restaurants - Burger Chef and Gino's (the mid-Atlantic hamburger chain that had exclusive rights to KFC - it was sold out in 1982 and came back in 2010).

Most commercials were filmed in black & white in 1962, 'heine'- it wasn't until about 1965 that Mr. Clean first appeared in color {am I right, 'tcaddone'?}.
